Maybe someone has images from the 50/3.5 Heliar as well?
These should be compared to the 50/1.5 Heliar at F/3.5 ( or whatever corresponding aperture). This leads into my thinking about the only use case I could have for the 50/1.5 lens. When I travel or am out and about, I like to shoot at many different apertures from wide open to about F/8. I already have the 50/3.5 and I really like its images. If the 50/1.5 when used between F/3.5 and F/8 would deliver similar or better images than the 50/3.5, then the 50/1.5 would make a ton of sense for me. It would be like having two lenses without needing to change lenses.
So if anyone could post comparisons of the 50/3.5 and the 50/15 on the same subjects at the same apertures, that would be very helpful to me.

They are only similar in name!
I've own the CV 50/3.5 Heliar for many years. These two lenses have a very different draw. The f/3.5 version is very sharp from wide open all the way to the corners and aberrations are well corrected (including coma). The new f/1.5 version stopped down to f/3.5 does not come close to the resolution from the 50/3.5 Heliar wide open, especially away from center.

It sounds like this lens may not be a good fit for me. Thanks for the valuable information. I have plenty of 50's already.

I will likely start a review soon but the more I shoot with it, the more I think the new 50/1.5 Heliar resembles a 'soft focus' lens with classic rendering. Wide open, there is a lot of glow from the under-corrected SA, a look I personal like for some applications.
Similar in DNA to something like the Leica Thambar. This reference came from a friend who saw some of my initial files. The Leica goes further but they invoke a similar feeling.

Beautiful monochrome work by FuyaYashima!
Love your samples too Juha. Would you mind sharing your PP for the second set? You are getting high contrast at close distance.
Thanks Fred! In the 2nd set (from 12th of September) I used a number of Capture One styles presets, different ones on different photos. I tried out a few options as there was different types of light and color in indoor and outdoor shots etc. and overall the weather was quite drab that day so I wasn't sure what would work. I usually just apply a style preset that I like (to tweak the colors and tone curve) and leave it at that but if there is some need to tweak the exposure or saturation or to bring down highlights or such I add small tweaks on top but quite often I skip the extra tweaking.
The K100 and K200 mimic some Kodac filmic looks, and F400 mimics a Fuji filmic look. I use the K100 styles quite often and I like the results with those but mostly for outdoor sunny weather shots.
I hadn't used these c1naturalstyles presets in a long time but I wasn't so happy with what Capture One's Beyond Film and Nordic presets were doing with the reds in some of the photos so I tried the old preset on a few shots.
In my experience the lens is having reasonable sharpness and contrast wide open at close distances and it gets softer and bleeds more the further the focus distance gets. I haven't tried to apply any special tweaks to add contrast etc. although these styles could have some impact. If you are interested in checking out some specific Raw files for some of the shots I can share those if you let me know which ones.

We had a national holiday and the weather was great so I shot some more Heliar classic samples, this time with my Sigma fp. These are SOOC JPEGs from camera, shot with standard color profile and tone curve set to auto (strong). I made color-shading compensation profiles for the lens (with Expodisc) and used them while shooting.
Stopped down shots were taken at f5.6 and f8, and rest were taken wide open.

I'm for Fred. The photo of the people shows how the lens really draws. I was hoping it would be the successor to the Classic Heliar 50mm F2, but it's a different lens and it draws differently. I am thinking more and more about the Heliar 40mm F2.8.

Thanks for these! Looks really nice stopped down, contrasty and sharp. Is that also your impression?
On my 24 MP cameras (Sony A7C, Sigma fp) it does reasonably well stopped down to f5.6 / f8 but there's some field curvature that I need to look out for (not sure if it would be there on Leica digital M) and when shooting against bright lights there can be more ghosting and flare etc. since it's only single coated and there is some distortion as well. The other recent CV lenses will all be better optimized for stopped down shooting (e.g. 50/2 APO, 50/1.2, 50/1.5 VM II) when compared for corner-to-corner sharpness overall. Heliar classic is rather designed for different things but I won't have a problem using it for both wide open bokeh shots and these type of stopped down shots in my personal use.

So far, you can observe the fascination of the "MACRO Lens" function because it is probably the first 50mm lens which you can take pictures from 50cm. Which gives you very magnification ratio. I am asking for more pictures of people.

I can't help with portrait / people samples as I don't shoot portraits very often and I don't post my family photos online. I did shoot many Japanese festival events (especially in the summers) while such events were happening but Covid-19 killed all those events for the last 1.5 years, so no opportunities to take people shots in any public event in the near future either...
Hopefully others who get the lens will post more of those people shots soon
