Wishful thinking but hope this can compete to some degree with the phenomenal RF 28-70 F2 from Canon. That lens is a true beast in size and quality. Even a range of 35-70 F2 and then F2.8 to 150mm would be a certain win for me.

There is no way this Tamron is going to be F2 at 70 mm, unless it's way bigger then it looks to be. Not to mention it would make their 28-70/F2.8 kinda pointless (yes i know 35 isn't 28 but still) I will be very happy if it goes till like 50 mm with F2 and maybe like 65 mm with F2.5. I'm really looking forward to this lens either way.

Hmmm. Interesting lens. Could see getting this and pairing with my 20g for landscape shots. Bummer they had to break their 67mm filter size rule but makes sense in this case I guess.

Has filter size been announced?

If it's like the other recent Tamron variable zooms in terms of aperture then it's possible we could get f2.2 around 50 and nearish to 70, f2.5 around 85 and 100, and f2.8 around 135 and 150.

More likely though I think is that since it's such a wide aperture to begin with it will probably not retain that as far throughout the zoom range as we hope for. I'm guessing it goes to f2.2 by 40mm, f2.5 by 50mm and f2.8 by 70mm. Still very exciting though if performance and rendering is there!

Been looking to buy the 70-180 as an event lens…. This is a better fit, I can easily work with 35 as a starting point. Switch to the 17-28 if I need wide. So much coverage, only two lenses. Hope the weight is strong 1Kg or less.

Gets me closer to my favorite wedding lens that didn't quite work -- the ol' Tamron 28-105 2.8.

No data, but the filter size is slightly larger than the diameter of Tamron 70-180/2.8, I think it is 82mm.

I hope it is still 77mm but can become easily 82mm.
Def its weight is 1000g at least. And no tripod collar for landscaping.
I recently have posted an issue with 70-180 lens which has the same VXD motor https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1660813/1#15618442. Hope Tamron engineers solved the issue in the upcoming lens.
It would be great for travel photography if paired with WA zoom like 16-35 lens.

If superimposed the calculated filter thread is (!!!) 80mm so it is too hard to predict. I still assume it is 82mm.

This intriguing lens is nowhere near big enough to need a tripod collar.

The 70-180 is 67mm so I'd guess 77mm here. Remember that photo comparison is likely a guess at scale so let's hope smaller yet.

1 kilo is not heavy enough for a tripod collar, isn't it? 70-200 type lenses weighting 700-800g have an *optional* tripod collar usually. And Sony 70200G has it bundled.

I don't mind lens being larger / larger filter size as long as the IQ is great. I would even asume it will be bigger given the F2-2.8. Filter size while quite important isn't a deal breaker nor top priority for me.

I think your guesses/estimates are very close,

If the 35-150/2-2.8 extends while zooming, it’s all the more reason to have an optional tripod mount compared to 70-200mm zooms with internal zoom.

For now the really important questions left are: weight and price. I would asume they want to keep it around 1000-1200 grams and as for price 1500-1600$ seems reasonable. This is such a unique and versatile lens for Sony that unless they go crazy with the weight/price it will sell like hot cakes.

The Sigma 28-70mm 2.8 is still on my radar but will wait for the 35-150mm. I have primes in this range and I use a zoom mostly for around the house and hiking. I don't care about the size in those situations. When I'm out in public places, I prefer the smallest package overall. So sigma 24mm 3.5 and 45mm 2.8 work great for that.

I just hope the bokeh on the 35-135mm is very good. Doesn't have to be excellent, just not harsh.

What does everyone make of the new 28-75 G2?
https://www.tamron.eu/magazine/blog/detail/development-announcement-28-75mm-f28-di-iii-vxd-g2-model-a063-1105/

It just seems so quickly after the original, and that didn't have that much wrong with it? (apart from built quality and features). Is this just a quality upgrade all around or did Tamron find some sort of breakthrough?

I think we'll have to wait and see how it performs in reviews. You're right, it's interesting that they came out with it so soon after a relatively popular original. It would be nice to hope for some really impressive performance upgrade somehow... hard to imagine how they could wring much more performance out of the basic concept (a reasonably-sized, reasonably-priced, 3x standard zoom)... they're already very good and the things that hold them back are getting towards being fundamental to the design constraints, surely?... I mean, they can't be quite as sharp as a prime, they can't have as little distortion or vignetting at equal apertures. Maybe autofocus speed and reliability? But any improvement is welcome if they can come up with it. Might make for cheaper 2nd-hand copies of the original model, too, for anyone who has been waiting to buy one.

(There's already sort-of a thread covering both these new Tamrons that this discussion might fit better into, but this thread about the 35-150 seems to be the one that has gotten rolling more than the other, so whatever I guess!)

Well....if MTF is accurate, along with linear motors....seems like a significant change.

MTF Comparison

And yeah, this probably would be better discussed in a different thread....

It sounds like they set a high bar for themselves, we'll have to wait for reviews to see if it actually happened.

But they list "Best-in-class high image quality condensed in a compact body" (translated) as the first thing in lenses "Main Features".

Google-translated some more from their Japanese announcement:

Tamron:

The Model A063 has evolved further as a successor to the highly acclaimed 28-75mm F / 2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036) (hereafter Model A036). While maintaining the size of the Model A036, which has a reputation for being compact and easy to use, the design has been reviewed from scratch and the optical system has been redesigned to achieve even better depiction performance. It has the performance to support the latest digital cameras with increasing pixel count. A linear motor focus mechanism VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) has been newly adopted for AF drive, achieving higher AF speed and higher
