I see a lot of "from my kayak" posts. How do you guys maintain your balance in those crazy "will submerge any second" devices? And how are you brave enough to carry 1000s of $$ worth of gear on those things? 🤔🤔🤔🤔

As can be seen from above link natives did not have seats in the canoes.
The higher you are in canoe, the more unstable it becomes. When I get stuck in white caps its no llonger fun. It gets real serious. I slide off the canoe seat and onto the floor. But that’s not the end of it. I still must the craft around and head back to the point where I gott foolishly curious about the whitecaps. It gets real hazardous, because the craft is now suceptible to taking in water.
And my girlfriend and I have been to the bottom before.
Enough of that and onto kayaks. I suspect sit-in kayaks are more stable than canoes but someone wiith more experience than me should comment on this. Why do I say that kayaks are more stable? Becuase most poeple stay high in their canoe seat,
With a sit-inside kayak you are sitting on or below the water level. That’s as low as it gets and that is stable. Go figue!

My loon rig is much too heavy for me now. I am close to buying a kayak. I hope I get better soon because I cannot buy the kayak I have my heart set on..........until I can use it with confidence.

I've rafted and canoe'd down the Illinois River in Oklahoma several times with friends.
We usually get 1 raft, 2 or more canoes and one jacka$$ invariably rents a kayak.
We've fallen into the river multiple times and 1 time, my friend and I got trapped under the canoe,
with water flowing fast around us, and almost drowned us both. The Kayak guy, in the same stretch of the river,
went under like the titanic and we had to pull him out. That day, I decided to stick to rafts and ships!!!!
I really admire those of you who can shoot so steadily from these death machines!

Ha !! I don't own a kayak so I tried a couple of my friend's out in my pool and ended up using a cheap 9.5 ft pelican. The lagoon I was in is very, very calm so little to no chance of tipping over. Very uncomfortable though just sitting for hours at a time. I just ordered a Wistar pontoon fishing float. Should be here sometime today. I'm planning on trying that out on Monday or Tuesday. I'll update if anyone's interested. Here's a couple sets from that outing. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1714512https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1714829

With my limited funds I figured I could either buy a cheap kayak or a better grade belly boat, or fishing float. My Wistar pontoon fishing float should arrive today. I'll update if you're interested.

saaktham......As long as you are on flat water they are very stable and insure your gear before you go out. The yak I use is more for flat water and has a very comfortable removable seat....much like a lawn chair.

Gary......different brands have removable seats that are very comfortable. Native watercraft is a brand that I have. Craigslist is a good place to find used yaks at a more reasonable price.

Robert,
Check out this company: https://paddlenorth.com The Kayaks are inflatable, but super durable. I am looking to buy a tandem in the next week or so. They are designed for MN rivers and lakes, so I am pretty sure that they will support your kayaking needs in Maine.
I've decided to go this route so I won't need to hoist a composite kayak on my roof. In addition, I am looking to buy or build-out a camper in a micro-cargo van. Because these kayaks pack into a bag, they can be stored easily in the camper.
