It may just be my lack of imagination, but my assumption is this lens was created to make astro-shooters pee their pants with excitement, so I suspect their focus is on coma and CA correction and delivering as flat a field as possible at infinity. Other concerns, like close performance and flare, may be secondary. So the zooms may prove to be better all-arounders.
Give the GM designation and the 12-24GM's flare resistance, I think and hope the flare resistance is excellent. And I do think many peed their pants, including me, when this thing was announced

I'm not worried about flare because the 12-24mm is so amazing in this regard. Only lateral CA may be a concern at this point since it's a fast lens. But we will know more soon!

Nisi has their filter adapter on pre-order now, takes the same 150mm system as the 12-24 GM so easy to move or use both with the same filters! I am certainly going to be adding that on.
Good to hear! I have the 150mm system for the 12-24 G, (alas, not GM), so I hope it can be easily adapted to the 14mm.

I also think so, especially regarding sharpness it's hard to beat recent GM and DN zooms.
Jared has nice samples available for download comparing the three: https://froknowsphoto.com/sony1418/
It looks awfully good, though. Am I missing something, or did he not shoot any samples at f/2.8? It makes it harder to make direct comparisons with the zooms.
The size, weight, and apparent performance certainly make my favorite UWA, the Zeiss ZF Distagon 15/2.8, look like a relic of the past.

They were nice and released the standalone adapter without the kit. I recall it took a while for them to do the same with the 12-24 GM, it was the whole S6 kit or nothing for a couple months.

Thanks for the info about the adapter. I'll check it out.

Yep, 2.8 samples are missing AFAIR.

150mm filters are absolutely gigantic. They are much bigger than even cinema filters. I think I am going to go with rear Haida filters when they eventually come out. A box of rear filters takes up as much space in my bag as a small lens but a Nisi system with 150mm filters takes up a third of my bag.

Haida rear filters, unless they've changed, are thicker than others (Kase for example.) This can muck with lens performance towards the corner. (May be minimized depending on how much you stop down.)
This is on the Simga 14-24, I guess it's possible it may act differently on the Sony 14...

I think despite the FC problem due to the thicker filter glass the Haida rear filters are still a good choice. Although I also have a complete set of 150mm front filters I vastly prefer the Haida rear filters for my ultra wide lenses. They are extremely small and light. Two complete sets of them will fit in a single 52mm B+W filter case. Stopped down they are good enough and if I shoot wide open with a wide angle lens it is in almost all cases because I need more light on the sensor (astro, bioluminescence, aurora, glow worms, ...). And in these situations I never use ND filters. I've preordered the 14mm GM and definitely plan to use the Haida filters with this lens.

I would trust your judgement. I have them, but haven’t used them yet.

In the review, the shots with the "motion blur" look is a bit concerning to me. I think it could run some images. I wonder if you take multiple frames if this aberration would show up in all the images at the same spot? The discussion starts at about 20 minutes into the video.
p.10 #16 · Pre-order: Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM ($1,598)
The "motion blur" looks like another sign of optimization towards infinity performance to me, e.g. up-close this lens is simply not uniformly sharp across the frame.

I wonder if Haida can make one of those rear filters in a grad density for sunrise/sunsets. Would be odd having the fixed plane but I cant see putting the massive filter holder on the outside yet really want the grad

It's "motion blur", not motion blur .
I get what Dustin had on his mind when he said it, sometimes you get this kind of unsharp (but focused) picture which looks like it's been moved but I guess it's a combination of aberrations (or just astigmatism?) in that point of the frame that gives that impression...
