Thank you Tim for taking time for reviewing the photos.
After speaking with more owners it's a consensus that the focus point is as you say "between center and corner", and must be really fine tuned for best results.
I've sent back the lens today, hopefully the next one is better!

Yes, of course.
Still, the question remains about how frequent the variation is, how many copies am I likely to test before getting a good one. Nobody can tell of course, but I'm trying to understand if my chances of getting a good copy are better with the GM 12-24, the Sigma DN 14-24 or the GM 14mm.
I thought the 14mm might be a less complex lens compared to both zooms, so less variation, aber this doesn't seem to be the case if I look at the hugely different opinions and test results in the net and in the press, which cannot all be explained with different test methods.
Fred also doesn't seem to have luck with a good copy of the GM 14mm....Show more →
I need to revise the previous description of FC.
Today, I take back my first A7Riv I used before and tested 14/1.8 GM again, my second A7Riv is a bad copy, on the first A7Riv, 14/1.8 GM is a very good center, and the FC is a gentle forward curved, just like Sigma 14-24 and GM 12-24.

Thank you very much everyone sharing their experiences with this lens here.
After carefully read this whole thread, I've got completely confused:
I own a 16-35GM, but willing to have an even wider and faster lens for, among others, shooting at the northern lights and milky way.
Finally I hit the button and the lens is on its way and expecting to be in my hands right later today. I am allowed to return it.
The question could be:
1. To send it back without opening the box, cause you think that the overall quality of the lens is not worth it.
2. To open and try it, running the FC test and decentering test. (please I'd appreciate if anyone can reply this with the link to those tests.
3. To keep it without hassles at all cause it's a clear winner, no questions.
Thank you very much in advance to everybody reading this.
Regards from Tenerife, Spain.
Luis
PD.: if your advise is to keep it, maybe I'll also go for the Nisi filter holder.

I love my 14mm. Obviously check for quality and return if defective but don't write it off without opening the box. It has become one of my favorites. From what I have found front filters are the only way to go. I've tried both over the sensor and rear clip in on it and both distort badly at wide apertures. I ended up 3d printing a mounting ring for my breakthrough square filter holder.

I don't have the same return option where I bought it, although I can exchange it, but that's a PITA with my local camera shop. That being said, based on early testing of real work subjects (see images a few posts above), it looks pretty impressive from corner to corner. I'll take it for another shoot this weekend, and confirm that it's a keeper based on real world images.
To Luis, you should open it and try it. But make sure to get out and use it in real situations, before deciding anything.

I am about to buy the Sony 14mm 1.8 and I read briefly through this thread and the variation of quality of the copies worries me. Sometimes it is referred to "Fred"s test, sometimes to the one from Philipp Reeve - can someone point me to which test shall be used to ensure that I get a good copy?

I just did the centering test with my new 14mm and one upper left corner is pretty off - is this acceptable for this type of lens or would you return it?

Anyone have a perfectly centered copy? I've already returned two.
The first copy had one super sharp corner, and one super soft.
The second copy was very soft on the right side.
I received another copy today, and while it's not pefect, it's definitely more even.

thanks!
Both are fine!
And don’t expect perfection with this combination of angle of view and speed.

“Altogether I can really recommend the lens and the Haida kit (although the installation of the Haida adapter is a bit nerve-wracking). My new lightweight travel kit is now 14GM, 20G, 35GM (+200-600 if I expect to see wildlife)”
Question, why not use the 14GM in APS C mode and forgo the 20G for lightweight travel kit?
