I agree. It costs the same as the humongous Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DN E-mount and likely the latter won't perform any better. We have to compare apples to apples.
I'm very happy with my Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN but the Sony 14/1.8 GM + 20/1.8 G set is a faster alternative.
And the 14/1.8 and 24/1.4 faster yet That's what I am going with.
Question to all: I pre-ordered this new GM, and I rarely pre-order. I used my paypal balance and was immediately charged. I thought one isn't typically charged till shipment. Thoughts? It is because I used paypal not a CC?

B&H and many retailers specifically state that they charge PayPal immediately even for preorders. I'm guessing PayPal doesn't offer an option to pre-authorize

Yes, if you choose PayPal, you get charged immediately. Credit card, only when it ships.

So no more info on the corner sharpness of this lens at infinity? I might end up getting this one, though it really depends if it's really sharper than my sharp Sigma 14-24.

I just bite the bullet and joined to the party if those that preorder the lens.
I might be using the lens for not what it's designed for, but I'm very excited to find out what 14mm offers for street photography! Hope to get my copy in one month from today

Nisi has their filter adapter on pre-order now, takes the same 150mm system as the 12-24 GM so easy to move or use both with the same filters! I am certainly going to be adding that on.

I’d be surprised if it’s noticeably sharper than your Sigma 14-24 at 14, which is where it’s best. Not because I have my doubts about the quality of the GM, just that the Sigma (and GM 12-24) are so sharp already that it’s hard to imagine anything easily visibly sharper, and certainly hard to imagine anything usefully sharper.
I haven had anything in this focal length range for a while now, and for me he choice boils down to speed compactness and light weight (GM 14) versus flexibility (one of the zooms). I’m leaning to the GM prime.

I'd be surprised as well. The Sigma 14-24/2.8 is superb at 14mm. It has 18 elements vs 14 from the new Sony prime.
The Sony is faster though which is very useful for astro.

I would love to see someone post a blind test where the GM and Sigma are showing reasonable/actual size photos, let's 10-35MP, not 100 to 300% crops of the corners of a 50-60MP files and such. I am doubtful whether there's any real world differences in sharpness.

I can see differences between the CV 15/4.5 vs Sigma 14-24 @15mm even after f/5.6 at 50% mag.
With lower magnifications than that and the help of sharpening, they become very similar. In the case of the new 14/1.8 GM, I think the difference will be small even at pixel level. So knowing both will excel in resolution, the next question is: Do you need f/1.8 or the zoom flexibility?
Also do you prefer shooting 14mm with a small/light prime or a bigger zoom?
We need to test flare and lateral CA as well. The zoom is well corrected for color error.

I agree with this line of thought. I think people will make out sharpness to a thing. I already know I would only need the GM due to my kit, usage, and size requirements and shooting preferences. I am much more interested in the other aspects, specifically flare when it's a 14mm.

It may just be my lack of imagination, but my assumption is this lens was created to make astro-shooters pee their pants with excitement, so I suspect their focus is on coma and CA correction and delivering as flat a field as possible at infinity. Other concerns, like close performance and flare, may be secondary. So the zooms may prove to be better all-arounders.

I also think so, especially regarding sharpness it's hard to beat recent GM and DN zooms.
Jared has nice samples available for download comparing the three: https://froknowsphoto.com/sony1418/
