Congrats Fred! Hope you get it tomorrow so you can use it this weekend.

I forget how quickly I placed my pre-order, but checking my emails…I received B&H’s order confirmation email at 10:20am of the first day of pre-orders.

20 minutes = an eternity during B&H pre-order 😁. Trying to be virtuous (i.e. patient) 😇

Ha, my confirmation email was generated at 10:00:33am. 33 seconds and mine was going to come next week at earliest :-)

I got the lens, did some quick tests with some fine netting I focus on. Very sharp across the field and see no shift. At 1.8 surprising good. But, with the UV snap in, even stopped down, the edges really lose it. I can't see using it with this lens and wonder how the ND and night light filter will work. ?

Shot some bricks looking for consistency around the edges. F/1.8 corners are definitely softer than the center, and the lens improves at F/5.6 and F/8 at close distance, around 1 and 2 meters. At 5 and 10 meters the soft F/1.8 is much less noticeable, so really hoping infinity focus on the night sky will see similar improvements. Center was SHARP in all tests. Shooting on an a7riv, for this test, so imagine that a7iii and a7riii will show really good results.
And the bonus track is that sunstars are solid at F/5.6, and ridiculously sharp at F/11.
The lens is every bit as compact as the tubers of you have stated, and it fits right between the 20G/24GM for size and weight, so all comments about dimensions were also spot on.
Manual focus is even better than the 20G, which has one of Sony’s best manual focus experiences, in my humble opinion.
Can’t wait to see its star performance - unfortunately clouds seem to be building tonight.

I got mine yesterday and took some shots today and my impression was towards infinity focus the edges close to the maximum aperture do better at infinity in terms of sharpness across the image. I did some test shots to compare against the sony 12-24 2.8 but have not had a chance to go through them yet. This was not infinity but just a shot walking through the cactus garden

At f/1.8, I do expect some degradation at the corners even when using a thin 0.3m glass filter (Mounted on camera or back of the lens). Only gels or thin film would give you great performance at 14mm and f/1.8.
It should look very good starting at f/4 but it really depends on the lens 'native' field curvature.

I tried past 5.6 and still didn't get very good edges or corners, pretty bad with the Kase UV. Then I took it out and got some very good results. Just doesn't seem to work at all. I look forward to what others find with the clip in filter vs none.

I just looked at some shots compared to the Sony 12-24 f2.8 zoom.. and at 14mm the edges are better on the zoom at least at 2.8, 4.5 and 5.6.. what I have looked at so far

That’s disappointing if so. Did you do an infinity test?

That's interesting. I don't find it to be the case with the Sigma 14-24/2.8 @14mm. Even wide open, induced field curvature is minimal with the Kase clip-on. Pretty much gone at f/4. When I get the 14/1.8 next week, I will test this out.

The zoom is better corrected with 17 elements (vs 14 elements) and it's optimal at 14mm, so I would not be surprised if it outperforms the new prime in regards to resolution across the field.

Missed an awesome sunset last night as I didn't think the clouds would clear, it ended up being a super intense one. hopefully get some first real shots tonight with this guy. Some quick indoor testing does seem to confirm what other's have seen with the edges blurring or stretching near MFD. When I tested briefly outdoors with a little more reasonable distance to subjects (used the lettering on a bbq cover in the corners) it seemed quite sharp all around at f1.8 and a longer focus distance. For my uses that will be totally fine. Really looking forward to trying it out at night :-)

Not sure if anyone has noticed, I just watched this on youtube, at about 10:12, you can see the rear group move around. The guy said he thought there was something wrong with his lens when he heard something moving around inside the lens.

So, since so many of you already got the lens in hand, can you confirm that weird blur/loss of sharpness at closer distances when focusing at something outside the center area?

I was focussing about 4 feet earlier and didn't notice that. Even at 1.8 it was doing well.

I noticed this with the 50 GM and posted the question in the image thread. I found out it’s normal for all XD motor lenses. I notice it with the 135 GM, and to a lesser extent, the 35 GM.

Thanks, so it might have been just bad copies some reviewers got...

Could be because I was pretty surprised at how sharp it was at 1.8. Sure the corners aren’t real super but they aren’t bad at all considering I was shooting at 1.8

Thanks for the quick impressions. Would love to hear about coma performance. Lenstips has me confused but seems to be huge differences between some close up abs infinity results so maybe coma is one.
