I got my 35mm yesterday but have noticed it seems to exhibit some odd behavior, not sure if it's the lens the camera or something I'm doing wrong with it. I use it with an A7riii and at f1.4 the lens seems to work pretty good and the images are very sharp through to f2.8. After that the images start to get very soft and the AF isn't accurate as I can get sharper images manually focusing, although even something at f5.6 is softer than f1.4. This is especially apparent for landscapes at infinity where the lens won't focus to infinity.
Here's an example of what has been happening with the left at 1.4 and the right at f8. I have tried my sony 24-105, and tamron 70-180 and neither have this issue so I don't think it's the camera but not sure if I should be looking to exchange the lens for another copy....Show more →
That is weird, and if not caused by some indirect difference (for example, not having IBIS turned on and then using a slow shutter speed; focus point changed and was no longer infinity), then I have some test suggestions:
1. Using the manual aperture ring, stop down to f/8. Is the aperture hole centered?
2. Put the camera on a tripod, set focus to manual. Focus at infinity at f/1.4. Take an image. Set to f/8. Take an image. Set the aperture to f/8 manually (ring on lens). Take picture. Do you still have the issue?

Good luck,

Thanks Jim, I think that might have been it, something was definitely off with it. Ended up returning it and buying one from the buy and sell forum here and the new lens performs as expected.
Couple of shots taken at 1.4 on an A7r3 the sharpness is impressive, even more so than the 35 1.8 which I thought was excellent.
Have you ever tried Loxia 25mm? It is completely a different angle of view but having that recently reminds me of RX1r that I sold a few years ago, what a mistake...

Hi. Does this render better than the 35mm F2 on the Sony RX1? I had to let it go because of the high percentage of misfocus, but I still miss it. I have the 24mm F1.4 GM, but I'm not that satisfied yet. Should I get this? I have tried 28mm F2, 35mm F2.8, 55mm F1.8, Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 and I have not felt that any of these were able to surpass the rendering of the RX1, even the 24mm F1.4GM still felt not as good. I'm using an A7 III by the way.
Also, does it focus as fast as the 24GM? Thanks....Show more →

I love and feel at home in both, if that matters
I think they inspire different feelings of connection in me. I feel connected to the earth, to natural world, to limitlessness when I'm in a forest, or hiking a mountain, or on the ocean. When I'm in a big, crowded city, I feel connected to people, to humanity, to culture, to the milieu, to the millions of possibilities of existence.
And to bring it back to lenses...I'm a big fan of 35mm to capture both of those. These days my X100V is filling that role, so my 35GM lust has abated a bit...but there is no doubt that it will return...
