It wasn't important in the photographic industry for most of the AF age until recently (the past decade) when it returned as a retro throwback. I'm sure many enjoy it but I can't see why it should be so necessary that it justifies these prices for what are small slow consumer primes. As for the quality, I'd prefer faster lenses that are as good as these when stopped down to f2.5 rather than lenses designed to be slow simply to ensure MFT bragging rights and justify the pricing. The lenses are unlikely to be that exceptional, they've simply moved the goal posts. ...Show more →
I was stating my preferences and I'm glad that Sony produced these lenses the way they are. I guess I'm retro then.
And the pricing is better then expected too. Nice!

If that is true, then it is disappointing. One advantage of slower lenses should be less axial CA. Axial CA is very aperture dependent and should be much less prominent at smaller apertures.
Is it the case? Sorry didn't watch the video. That's one strength of the Sigma 45/2.8 which has very low axial CA.

Watching Mark Galer's video ignites the GAS to build a small kit with the A7c and the 24 and 50 as an ever day kit for chasing my kids around instead of dragging around the A7RIV. Great to have so many options!

Personally I'd happily lose the expensive button and aperture ring and knock off $150. These are small slow travel lenses not pro lenses.
Hmm, no. Professional photographers, i e simply those who shoot for a living, tend to need gear they can trust, that will perform well and not crap out on them. So things like a solid build and fast, reliable AF is "pro" for sure. But the rest is really preference and needs. As in, do you need to shoot in low light (not everyone does), will you rely on blurring out your backgrounds a lot (not everone wants to).
I'd be happy to take any of these on paid assignments, where suitable, as long as I can rely on them to get the job done.

LoCa seems to be quite rampant. It's quite noticeable in this Mark Galer photo. Especially the bridge parts. Managable, for the size? Sure, but still annoying.

Price seems better than initially rumoured. Can see these settling out at a decent price in the UK after the initial period. Away to watch some YouTube reviews to get the GAS flowing

Yes, but image quality seems to be below expectations based on these initial reviews (at least for me). So the price seems actually kind of high...

Yes, will be interesting to see local price and overall rendering, and compare to Sigma I series. I'm contemplating either now, as they both have an aperture ring. I'm glad I can finally get a complete set of primes, for my needs, with an aperture ring and (seemingly) solid build.

There is always a bonus to pay, here. I think warranty etc. are somehow indirectly included in price.
Well I don't know exactly why, but the gap is always huge with Sony, I mean, significantly higher than most of its competitors. Whether you are a working pro or a hobbyist, this is slowly becoming annoying...

I guess I'm not seeing that. A bit of line doubling in the distant bokeh. A lot of vignetting, but Mark Galer may have added that in post. Overall, his example photos look excellent to me.

I still own the Canon 40/2.8 pancake. A good lens optically. It only costs around 200 euro.
Seeing the price of this Sony 40mm makes me laugh in disbelief.
