Will be keeping an eye on this lens once it comes out. Hoping Fred does detailed comparison vs 50/1.4 ZA. 35mm is my favorite so the 35/1.4 GM is on order but I get in the “mood” to shoot 50 sometimes and the 50/1.4 ZA has so far had my fav 50mm rendering on Sony. Very curious how the new GM will do.

This will be a must buy for me. I hope they have found some good tricks to keep the size and, more importantly, the weight manageable. The Canon equivalent is the same size as the 85GM but 130g heavier.

The canon RF 50 1.2 is 950g
The canon EF 50 1.2 is 550g
I think Sony could get us close to the weight of the old school EF with a lot of improvements by leaning into the trade offs others have suggested like vignetting and a bit of focus breathing.

I've been waiting and requesting this lens for years, and I would certainly buy it as I am a huge 50mm fan (and having said that, I would also a want a reasonably sized/price FE 50/1.4 GM as well)
I have the RF 50/1.2 and shoot it on a R5. To me, the f/1.2 glass is not about optical performance on all dimensions at all f-stops. They are not meant to be lenses that impress landscape shooter and many other shooting envelops. It is about a lens that delivers a je-ne-sais-quoi character wide open and gives that special look wide open. A bit of vignetting is not a deal breaker for those shooting envelope, I think.
I have high hopes for a 50/1.2GM. Ideally under $2,300 and not too big and heavy (although it will never be light and small with those specs). Hopefully with a design that doesn't squeeze the fingers with the grip design on modern Alpha cameras. Good center sharpness wide open and smooth bokeh.

I understand, but the 35 1.4 GM has been pushed back to April. Considering the announcement of the 35 and the originally anticipated release date, they'll probably be really close to each other when deliveries start.

Perhaps, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 50 f/1.2 GM isn't available until June either. Anouncements and delivery dates sometimes are close and sometimes they are not.

I do see the magic of the RF 50 F1.2. Although I am fully invested in the Sony ecosystem, I purchased an EOS R just for that RF 50 1.2...and I do own the Sony ZA 50 also....the Canon Rf 50 is in a class all by itself as of now
I have never shot either (not much of a 50mm shooter, and dislike large primes) but from what I can tell, I very much prefer the ZA. But, to each his own

A fast 50mm is tighter than your vision and it has shallower depth of field; it's a bit like what you imagine you're seeing.
Canon's EF 40/2.8 STM, which is about 42.5mm, is the 'perfect' 'normal' lens. I need to get another one, gave the first to a sibling...
Makes sense... always thought of 50mm as a "normal" FL, thus typically stayed away from it. I guess if it is fast, it would have *some* appeal, but the look of longer FL lenses (especially fast ones) has much more appeal to me.

I have shot enough with the RF 50 to know its quirks. Certainly, it doesn't have any more magics than any of the GM I have tried. I love it mainly how responsive it is in term of AF compared to the FE 50/1.4 (it can grab focus in lower light. The RF can produce busy bokeh and transition with any full body shot or further. But at time, I overlook that just cause the convenience it provides
A lot of it now comes to the personal preference and perspective, though I highly doubt Canon engineers intended to have any magic built into their lenses.
I hope Sony is going to make it clear where they stand with this lens. A huge and weighty GM 50/1.2 like the RF (or god forbid the Z 50/1.2) wouldn't go well with any of the other GM primes. We Sony shooters know that any of the recent GM primes are among the lightest and smallest within their respecitve classes. If I want to have much less compromises, I might as well get into the Leica SL system. Canon RF and Nikon Z seem like a "half-ass" effort in the race to the top IQ with no compromises.

A 50/1.2 GM is a day-one pre-order for me. I love love love my 50 ZA but any extra light is gravy for me. Any slight IQ improvements and focus speed improvements would be more than welcome as well.

Hope this rumor is true.
The 50 1.4 ZA is more than just sharpness and light gathering. It’s my most used lens. I’m hoping that the GM has similar falloff and rendering as the ZA.

In all honesty, while I'm sure the Sony 50 f1.2 will be fantastic, I think it's going to be hard to convince me to use any other 50mm-ish lens besides the Voigtlander 50mm f/2 APO Lanthar. Yes, I don't have autofocus, but good god is that such a fantastic lens.

As I posted in the 35mm thread, I ordered both the CV 35 APO and the 35 GM. I see them as complementary lenses, each with its own set of strengths. I do a lot of black and white conversions and APO lenses excel at micro contrast, contrast and sharpness. I plan ordering the 50 1.2 even though I’ll also own the CV 50 APO.

The 50mm 1.2 GM has been sighted in the wild! According to SAR: 'the lens is big and wide but not as long as I would have expected. Definitely shorter than the Sigma 35mm f/1.2 for example.'
