lenstip did test the Canon 50 1.2 R? I didn't see that. Did you mean the opticallimits review?
In that case, comparisons might be difficult to do if procedures are different.
Well I was mistaken. You're correct, lenstip hasn't reviewed the RF 50 1.2. I was looking at the page for the RF 50 1.2, but someway ended up at the review for the EF 50 1.2. so ignore my previous comment.

No issue. Opticallimits reviewed it. It is an excellent lens.
The Sony has a much faster AF, less vignetting and round bokeh balls from f1.8/f2 on in the corners (Canon's show hexagonal structure already). lenstip shows it to be exceptionally sharp in the center, but I don't think the Canon weill be far off.
We now have great options for both systems.

I don't think, that there are things improved later on. The optical formula should be fixed by now.
I think corner sharpness should be comparable, too, but we know from R. Cicala how important field curvature is. So soft corners (not focussed on corners, but center) can be due to field curvature and optimal focussing is mandatory. Cicala put out a post at DPR on exactly this topic.
I don't personally mind about the very corners at f1.2, never need those sharp. I don't have anything against the f1.4 being sharper, too. It is a fine lens and we have two of those.
AF speed and f1.2 are things I can make use of.
Side note: My 55/1.8 has better performance in the corners than the 50/1.4 until about f2.8. Then the f1.4 gets slightly better. ...Show more →
yes, i might eventually buy a 50 gm, and maybe add 35gm for street shoot/corner sharpness.
interesting, my 50ZA has (much) sharper corner vs 55 1.8.
i highly doubt that, you might have a decentered 50ZA:

Copy variation? I tested two vs. the 55. My 50s behave exactly like lensrentals show. Very sharp in the center, visibly less sharp towards the rule of thirds locations and then getting sharper again. On the A9ii that doesn't matter. On the A7riv it is clearly visible.

Of course this is a reasonable question, but I am sure Sony (or Canon etc.) won't play mind tricks.
Im just god smack how they made smaller, lighter and seems like on par with sharpness/af speed(arguably) with the canon and Nikon equivalents. Which are bigger, heavier, more expensive and dont even wanna mention the obvious bigger thing on both nikon and canon which has been problem for haters around the world on the sony's. So if the T stop is the same as the rest 1.2 lenses on the market is gonna be pretty major WTF moment and wake up call for them.

Yes, it's amazing what Sony has done with the latest releases (A1, 35GM, 50GM, and before that: 12-24GM).
I actually feel obliged now to put my money where my mouth is after complaining last year that Sony got complacent...

Corner sharpness on a f1.2 lens at f1.2-f/2 is at the very bottom of my priorities list. This is not a landscape lens, although it most certainly could be used for that purpose.
This is a lens meant to be used wide open. I won’t be looking in the corners.

Here are 100% crop comparisons I did for f/1.2 vs f/2.8 using the barn photos from Dpreview's sample gallery. Exposure and WB normalized, including vignetting correction adjustments

The Magic Wedding Photographer did a comparison of the 50/1-2 GM vs RF 50/1.2 on his YouTube channel. Not super in depth but did try to show some head to head comparison. His summary seems right. Both are nice and offer a lot of the same thing and no one is going to change systems for one or the other. Sony users should now be happy there is a great new f/1.2 lens if you wanted one.

Exactly - no use humping that sand all over the place to shoot f/8.

I will certainly give this lens a try and I fully expect to like it a lot.
I looked at some reviews and the one thing I could find out was how the design interacts with the grip on a A7R4 or A1? Is there enough space there for man’s hand?
This issue is answered in this review, about 4 min in and forward. Net/net: the Sony is actually doing better in this regard.
So let me see: the Sony 50/1.2 GM is 200 grams lighter, faster AF + internal focus, 72mm filter size, more compact, has less vignetting, better handling by being thinner at the base, and all this while being $300 cheaper?!

Does the Active Steadyshot (1.1x crop) option take into account a lenses focus breathing or not? It would be great it you could essentially get a breathing free focus pull that used the cropped area to compensate for focal length changes.
The huge amount of breathing on the new 50mm GM made me think about it.
p.22 #19 · Pre-order: Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM ($1,998)
Regarding breathing, these mainstream makers each have their ideas on what to push at users to get them to buy in, circular bokeh balls, lack of artefacts in these highlights, creamy bokeh. These features become an unstated set of standards.
But the first one to highlight a lack of breathing will win over many (thus far) quiet users who want to shoot creatively in their event projects. Some of the new breed of lenses are gobsmackingly horrible at this, having sacrificed one feature they think no one will notice for the other goodness they do want you to notice.
Arri uses an internal set of compensating elements to arrive at zero breathing. I'm sure there would be a strong market for Sony to let their lens weight drift up 100-200g to include this very effective approach. They could call it a 'GM 50/1.2 cine edition'. It's at least as important to future proof event lenses as multiple AF motors and speed limit-breaking focus acquisition.

Don't the Arri Signature Primes cost $25k, weight 2000 grams and have 114mm filter threads?
