So....I'm signed up now, but again, nowhere do they mention early access. My local dealer also tells me this is the first time he's gotten a list from Sony with any new release, and he's calling them to clarify as well, as I was supposed to get one from the first batch until Sony sent him the list at the end of last week. So the plot thickens, I guess. This feels botched by Sony. Vastly underestimate demand, screw up release dates, and now this. I guess it's growing pains learning how to deal with a pro audience?

That was the date on the email but if you contact them or had after that date, they will put it in manually for you once you show them the order, date and where ordered.

I still have my Canon gear but moved to Sony because of a much better size and I like the construction quality. The Canon, and I used them for years, is more bulky and less utilitarian.

Lookie here... I think it is B.S.. That makes it perfect for a Tony Northrup video.
I like Tony and Chelsea and think they’re pretty entertaining. They do know a lot about cameras, but it’s important to keep in mind they are part of the marketing machine, and they’re not always right.
For example, I don’t think Sony is playing catch-up with Canon. I think it’s the other way around simply because Canon’s sensor readout speed just isn’t up to snuff. Sony on the other hand has created very affordable sensors with readout speeds fast enough for 99% of uses, and where mechanical can cover the other 1%.
I think Sony’s hit the sweet spot with 50MP on a full frame camera. Even 61mp was too high except for studio situations (tripod and lights).
High FPS is good, but here you really can have too much of a good thing. I think 30FPS is pushing the limits even for the most demanding cases. After that you’re probably looking for a high speed slomo camera.

A7riv, a9ii, R5/R6, 50S all struggled to meet preorder demand. I think it’s not fair to criticize the company for that, especially during a pandemic that’s impacted so much of the chain.

Umm, no. I think you've missed the fact that I got two A7RIV's and the A9II at release and Sony did NOT pull this same thing with those releases. So no, this is not the same story as the last few years. In fact, I've always been an early adopter, even jumping into the digital world with release date purchases of all of the major Nikons in the late 1990's and early 2000's, then Soy from about 2003-2018, and now Sony. Every major pro body I've gotten on release date. Yes, I had to be on top of the preorders, but that's exactly what I did here. I had my name in with my dealer before this camera was announced. The "only SPS members are getting these A1's" is new, and my dealer has confirmed--he was not given lists like this for the previous Sony bodies.
Meanwhile Sony has now gotten involved and hopefully will be able to prioritize me, but honestly, you can't have a program that doesn't list a benefit like this. Not every pro signs up for the pro programs. As I said earlier, I always buy multiple bodies for backups, and I guess I'm super careful because I've never had to do an out of warranty repair in 35+ years of shooting. So basically I'm paying the $100/year now ONLY to get on a priority list for whatever new camera or lens they might pull this trick with.

I refuse to click on their videos and support them, so I have no idea what they're saying about this, but to me this mythical R1 sounds like a made-up wishlist of stuff just designed to make it sound better than what Sony has just stunned everyone with. I'm highly skeptical whatever Canon releases will be even half what those "leaked" specs are claiming.

I didn’t miss that. I know others who didn’t get one, and I know pros who received priority. Its possible your ship received more in their initial shipment than they had pros, so non-pros got some as well. Who knows. What I do know is this isn’t the first time this happened and it won’t be the last.
The last thing vendors or Sony want to do is piss off their base. Unfortunately, they can’t please everyone.

I totally agree, but this proves my point: If this was a benefit of SPS membership, they should have made that clear. Problem solved.

I also didn’t know about it until someone mentioned it on this forum. For first few weeks I blew it off since I preordered it very early but finally caved in hearing news about limited supply and shipping delay. I bet that worldwide semiconductor shortage is not helping either. Even though I missed the deadline, I applied last week, sent the email to Sony and was told that my info will be sent to my dealer. As I suggested before, you should to the same. To speed things up you can also call SPS to find out if they can add your name to your dealer’s list or somewhere else. While you are on the phone with SPS, tell them how you feel about the whole situation instead of endlessly venting here...

See...I'm not the only one! I actually took your advice, and Sony just got back to me. Joined this morning, was immediately approved, and now SPS support has emailed me back about my situation. Now we'll see if it makes a difference or not. I'd have been done venting at the first post if PDX didn't keep arguing that no one would join just for an early release and yet...now it's me and you, and I guarantee there's many others. Anyway, I'm happy to leave this here as Sony needs to know and others might benefit if they see this. I don't crawl the forums often so I missed other posts that you might have seen implying that signing up for SPS was relevant or would make a difference. I "knew" I was already on the list for ages with my dealer so I didn't feel like reading every post on the A1--my mind was made up ages ago. Had I done so, I might have had the same reaction as you and signed up.
I actually let Sony Pro know how lousy it was to not list early release access as a benefit. They indicated they will be contacting my dealer, so hopefully I'll get one of the two I pre-ordered. Fingers crossed.

Maybe you should just let it go.... This is getting close to endless whining. I had been a Nikon shooter for over 35 years, and a NPS member. I switched to Sony just a few months ago. Nikon NPS has been doing member priority in shipping for years. So since you were a NPS member, you could have wondered about that possibility with Sony. I did, so I emailed them and asked. And note that it was a few months after I joined Sony Pro Support. So far, I found SPS service to be vastly better than NPS, in my two experiences with them. I got my gear back within 5 business days both times. The last time I sent something to NPS, I didn't get my D850 back for over two weeks and I had to return it to them because the exposure compensation dial wasn't working.
I ordered my A1 on the phone with B&H a couple of minutes after the pre-order opened. I don't know if I will be getting one next week, even though SPS confirmed my registration of my order. If I get one, great. If not, I'll be perfectly happy to wait for one. In the meantime, I'll keep shooting with my A7RIV (sold my A9 already) and the world is not going to end for me.

I spoke with B&H on Friday. I hadn’t preordered until 2/14. They told me they should be able to fill 85% of all the preorders come Monday/Tuesday (and that they were still matching up orders with their inventory). They also said my order was right at the cutoff and most likely won’t get filled early next week. He also said they think they will be getting another batch within the next 2 weeks. Who knows.....

Unfortunately, I took the advice to order from a local dealer and cancelled my order with BH.
The local said I was on the initial list. Have not heard boo from them sense this delay started.
Not a pro, but have supported Sony tons from way back when they first started with mirrors interchangable lens cameras.
The only positive it's that it gives me time to evaluate whether Canon might be worth moving to.
I'll be going to one of my favorite wetlands with my Canon friend this week.
