p.4 #1 · Pre-Order Sony Alpha A1 (50MP, 30fps, 8K)

One to rule them all. Waiting for trickle down I guess... the price proclaims that they are still very committed to the segmentation across multiple cameras and lines.

At $5000 they would have sold a lot of these. They built a fort around the msrp of the a9 line. Lol

Anybody want to take bets that they offer them at a "student discount" at $5K? That will be after you buy one at full price, of course.

What is this introduction going to do to people who bought the A9II?

My brain hurts right now knowing that photography jobs are near-zilch, people are vastly out of work in the middle of a pandemic and camera model to end all camera models has been introduced at $6500.

I honestly can't believe the extent to which Sony threw the kitchen sink in there. I feel that 50mp camera with a rolling shutter that is claimed to be 1.5x the speed of the a9 is just too good. If that number is true the scan speed is about 1/225, which puts it just BARELY behind *other* cameras mechanical shutters, which tend to hit around 1/300 of a second.

Exactly. This is going to be the most effortless camera to use on the market, period.

Perhaps if you have someone who owns both an A7iii AND and an a7riv, they may justify selling both cameras to get an a1, but I don't know.

I have both those cameras, and while the A1 sounds really great, it's overkill for my useage.

Doesn't mean I won't keep an eye out for a price mistake somewhere, of course...

Welp - as a relatively new A9II owner this gives me some buyers remorse. Not enough to sell and upgrade as it’s still an amazing camera and I’m honestly fine with 24mp and the AF is amazing. I’d just want bird eye AF and I’d be absolutely happy. I chose the A9II over the A9 in hopes of getting a few firmware upgrades for a longer period of time.

Regarding the A1 price - it’s not *that* crazy considering what it brings to the party. If the GFX100S is coming in at $6K ( imo that’s a reasonable figure for a 102mp ibis equipped 44x33 camera) and the big pro CaNikons are $6K+ the A1 should hold its own.

Define "Pros" if you are talking about birders (a lot of people who were buying A9) to them, they can never get close enough, so cropping from 50mp is good. Just ask A7R4 owners. If you are talking about wedding photogs, I don't see why a wedding pro would choose A9 over A7III.

I was waiting and looking for an upgrade to my A9 that offered some decent video options as I'm starting to incorporate that more but once I'm greenlit to shoot NBA games again, this will probably make it into my bag.

Nope, I think tons of people will switch. You are talking about birders. You sell A9II and one lens, and you are there. The benefits: 50MPS to crop, 30fps, and Bird Eye Af, these three things will immediately make birders switch. If Sony wants to keep A9 line alive, they will have to heavily discount it (to cost like Canon R6 which also shares 20fps and 20mp).

True but when I look at the price tag of the A1 my original A9 becomes very attractive. It does what it was designed to do and still does it very well for me. Not saying I would not mind upgrading and maybe one day I will but my A9 at 20fps and 24 megapixels is fine for me in most cases. My A7RIV when higher resolution is wanted still does great too. The A1 sure seems like it has it all though. The bird eye AF will be awesome. At 6500.00 though.

For the New Real-time Eye AF bird mode: Do you really have to select the type of bird you're tracking for it to work.

Best part about that price is that it sends me an unambiguous message that the camera is not for me!

Instead of buying you A7RIV and A9 you could just buy one A1 As far as the price, remember how quickly Sony was doing $1000 off off A9? This is Sony not Canon, A1 will be $1000 off pretty quick.

Will the A9's get a FW update for "eye of the bird"?

I'm not gonna judge the person who drops approx. $20k on a supertelephoto and A1 for birds or whatever you like to shoot. I'm a car guy and I know plenty of people who spend that much extra on a version of a car because it performs better and it's their hobby. And really...depreciation, especially on lenses, is easier to manage then most cars anyways.

My bet and gut feeling is no because I think the new AI is tied to the XR processor and maybe to the even faster readout sensor.
But who knows.

Sitting back with a bowl of popcorn, watching the B&S board for the A9II's to go one sale All kidding aside, I have my doubts the A9II price will drop that much considering the fact that even at current listing prices, there's still around three thousand (US$) to make up to get to the A1.

I would be surprised if the a9II didn't get a decent amount of the features that can be addressed through firmware.

But is it fully compatible with the LA-EA5? (Mostly tongue in cheek)

Sony has given us the perfect A7R and A9 hybrid, and while I can't afford it today, it'll make an amazing upgrade to my R4 at some point.

Before we talk about it as being the perfect A7r and A9 hybrid, I think we have to see the sensor's performance at both high Iso and low ISO. Will it perform as well at low ISO as the A7r? It may not. The A9/A9II do not perform as well at low ISO as even the A7 III. Will it perform as well at high ISO as the A9/A9 II? It may not as none of Sony's high MP cameras (this is easiest to notice with the A7r IV) perform quite as well at high ISO as the A9 II.

My guess is that you will lose a little bit to the A7r IV at low ISO and a little bit to the A9 II at high ISO, but this A1 will do both very well and video a lot better than either of them. It will be a tough decision for some, however, whether two cameras that are more specialized is a better option than this one camera that tries to do it all.

I'm doubting it... I'm guessing the A9ii, which I bought, was just a quick fix to have something out for the Olympics last year. It uses the same processor as the A9, I believe, so its room for any kind of further firmware upgrades is extremely limited.

I think when it says "select the bird to be tracked" just means initiate RTT on the bird like we do for animals already. There is no way you would have to go in and select "finch" or "eagle"...

Looks good but I am worried about noise. If it is noisy like the other high mega pixel bodies it’s dead in the water otherwise could be the best camera.

Should have one of these soon

Here's another question...do we know what lenses can handle 30fps?
