Interestingly, many of the 30fps lenses listed do not have XD linear focus motors. It would be interesting to know how many 3rd party lenses also support 30fps.
Hey, the 85 GM at 20 fps. But I thought it's "slow."

I’m curious about the difference between the A1 being capable of 120 a/f calculations per second, and what the lenses can receive and execute. For example:
If that is correct, the lenses themselves can receive and execute less a/f commands than the bodies provide, but perhaps each A1 a/f instruction to the lens is backed by more data and thus of higher quality. For example: the a9/a9II might calculate and send up to 60 times per second with a 1:1 a/f calculation to a/f instruction ratio. The A1 @120 a/f calculations/sec might result in a 2:1 ratio.
I’m speculating on how this works, but would love to have more information. ...Show more →
Yes, the number of autofocus motor movements is not going to be 120hz.
Rather, the camera will track the subject in the frame and determine / predict their position at 120hz, and drive the lens to the right focal distance whenever necessary.
The large benefit is in the ability to spend 3-4 frames seeing movement than the ability to issue an increased number of commands.
For many cameras they will get only a single shot at finding where focus should be between frames. The a1 can do many.

How are they relating fps to lens AF requirement given the subject dependency ? I could use a Loxia to shoot 30 fps if my subject is a statue. There's also a different requirement for tracking an object moving linearly from near to infinity (heavy focus group ok with enough torque or force) vs one making rapid and erratic movements back and forth (likely requiring a light focus group).

Doesn’t the criticism of the 85GM pertain to its focus acquisition performance, not FPS?

It’s clear there was no prep (look at the model’s nails), the focus is off, etc. Is there a reason they couldn’t prepare some real images to show the camera’s strengths? I know this is more of a marketing question but, again, that’s weird. Probably anyone on this thread could do better.
I noticed that right away. Gross nails. Like they woke her out of bed and splashed some white mascara on her moments before the reveal.
Speaks to how secretive they were about this whole thing I suppose.

Its slow to focus ( the lens itself) so 20fps would be tough if subject is moving would be the real issue and the issue I had with the 85. It would not keep up with models with any real movement. Now how this lens performs with the new A1 focusing ability could be improved some but I would not be betting donuts on that. The 135 no question or even the 85 1.8
But the basic issue is big lens elements with that tech it was just slow

Fantastic tech in this camera. Between this and the A7s3, good job bringing back the innovative Sony of 3 or so years ago. It shows I made the right decision going from my A9 to my R5 though. Would have loved to own this camera, but too expensive for me. It still has some minor video crippling (no over oversampled FF 4k and no 8k 4:2:2). Looking forward to seeing what it does in some capable hands. Love that canon and Sony are bringing out one camera to rule them all for those of us equally in the stills and video world. Ironically, did anyone else catch that non of the pupils were in focus in the demo images? https://www.dpreview.com/sample-galleries/3585416076/sony-alpha-1-full-resolution-sample-photos/7523965305

Yeah, not overpriced. It's not designed for people who think that, obviously. But Sony ain't playin. Their awesomely over dramatic intro video features people like Paul Nicklen, Christina Mittermeier, Kesha Lambert, Charly Savely...If you wondered who they feel like they designed it for...

Chris and Jordan from DPReview also mentioned in their preview/spec video that an A1 is already on its way to them. That means that all the regular reviewers (love them or hate them) will be able to at least provide some more tidbits over the next week. Well before anyone has to make a final decision if they want to cancel their preorder.

I just figured out an excellent new feature of the A1. It has a 30/15FPS option...what that means for me is I will finally get bursts of Bufflehead ducks where the wing positions don't perfectly alternate frame to frame.
It is uncanny at 20FPS that all you ever get with a Bufflehead at full tilt is two wing positions (unless they slow for landing or bank to the side). They must flap at a perfect 1/10s. My favorite wing position is full down stroke for this specific duck. Sometimes I'll get a 60 shot sequence with just two alternating wing positions and if one of those isn't wings down then none of them are. 15FPS (and 30FPS) should allow for a way better selection. Well worth the $9K

Spoiler alert: all YouTube talking heads will gush that they are liquidating their Sony gear for the A1. Every video will have a pic of them holding it with the sensor exposed and their mouths agape. They’ll claim that yes, it’s expensive, but it took their photography to the next level, despite only putting mediocre 100 pictures on it during their loaner period.
Except for Jordan. He will be most unpleased.

The bigger question is if Chelsea will be switching back to Sony after her "lengthy" 5 month stint with the R5....Tony already pondered this in his preview video
