An unusual pastime?

I just got my 13th (+ or -) RX1 because its rendering is just so good. It's a long shot, but given the 45's rendering, I'll hold out hope.

A great development to further legitimise small high quality character lenses, for our small cameras. The 65/2 would have been subject to design constraints if the max aperture was to be kept at f2 - much longer and they get larger/heavier fast or require a lot of fancy glass as per the VM 75/1.5 ($$). Many users love their CV 65/2 but they tend to be quiet on forums.

I sincerely hope their AF issues are soon in the past, that they realise how this matter is often the trigger to not buy in for many otherwise keen potential buyers. The 28mm dilemma continues, but knowing Sigma they are likely to plug this gap sometime if the series takes off in volume.

And if these lenses replicate 'the formula' of general behaviour and feel and look of the images from the 45/2.8 why would this not happen? After all, not much competition in this space: the small, tidy, affordable, character AF series. Kudos to Sigma, looking forward to seeing the images. It's a win for common sense and orthodox design.

Honestly, a super 28/3.5 would interest me...in the vein of this 24, assuming it is top notch.

Neither can a great many on this forum!

I don't know if it's a rumor or they filed a patent, but it sounds like we might see a 28/1.2.

I would so much like if they decide to produce a 28 1.4 DG DN Art (please no more then 600g!)...

Did I miss an interview? When I last read, only the 45 was designed explicitly as a character lens because they couldn't get the performance they originally wanted at the size/aperture. Now it seems like a lot of people are convinced that the whole line is going to be like the 45 despite none of these lenses looking particularly petite for their spec.

Things... happen.

JK They got sold cause the ergonomics suck. Then you look at images and realize how great it is. It's an endless cycle.

These seem like more good candidates for an eventual a7c successor, pairing nicely on the smaller format camera.

Right now many of the small lenses are CV and Of course MF.

Starting to see a lot of possibilities for a really nice small kit.

If we could get a smallish 90-100 that would round out the hypothetical kit nicely.

In that case I’d love to bag an 18, 35, and 90.

Given the many options of 35mm lenses, a focal length that I love, I would have nontheless much preferred a compact, high quality 28mm f/2.0 or f/1.8

I also think they will be nothing like 45/f2.8, especially seeing that "macro switch"... My guess is less sharp than Samyang and Sony 35mms, but a bit nicer (but not AFC-is-having-trouble-because-of-SA nice) rendering in exchange with an added bonus of 1:2 macro mode .

@j4nu wouldn't say no to that! Might prefer the magic coming out of my 20 G to something Sigma comes up with, but uh... only one of these lenses is going to exist

Dunno if I would trade the possible superior optics of a 35/40 G to the (hopefully) superior 1:2 reproduction ratio and that H O T B O D of the Sigma though. I mean, LOOK AT THIS THING.

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Sigma-45mm-f2.8-.jpg

And the 35 & 65 look even better designed, imo. Now please just have full sealing.

I'd say these lenses will sell quite a few of the current a7c's, assuming they are as good optically as we've come to expect from Sigma and they don't have AF issues. It'll be interesting to see if the 24 offers any strong value proposition over the Tamron 24, but the 35 and 65 should be real pleasures to use on that camera.

The Sigma 24/3.5 C has got a 55mm filter thread and looks to have a nice build. That compares to a 67mm filter thread on the Tamron 24/2.8. We’ll have to wait and see about the optical quality.

I'm expecting Sigma to win on build quality. The aperture ring gives them a big lead out of the gate. I doubt the Sigma will focus as close. It will be interesting to see how they stack up optically. Hopefully, the Sigma relies less on profiled corrections.

What about the additional ring on 65 and 35 is to compensate SA similar to that on 45 for short distances?

We probably won't know until the the official announcement on 12/1, but those rings are going to be the source of much speculation until then.

Hahaha!!

And I hope that they're EXACTLY like the 45/2.8. I realize that lens has a few detractors, but I honestly think it's a modern Cult Classic.

To each their own, of course!

Haven't been this pumped for a release... ever, really. Sealing + optics that are good enough Sigma, please. Going over it in my head now... and I don't hope the optics are like the 45 2.8. Before anyone skewers me, that lens is admittedly gorgeous—I just don't think the kind of hassle involved with juggling spherical aberration incedence vs distance is ideal for an everyday, anything (looks like a 1:2 reproduction ratio at least) lens.

If they could pull that look off without having to juggle distance though... goddamn.
