Why would you care about that "one guy" if your happy with it?

I don't really, in a way that I still think the samples I posted are centered.
It justs exhausts my mental fortitude for dealing with humans, when the same person later posts his samples to prove his point how a centered lens should look like and they look worse than mine.
Or I show that one lens is different than the other in some aspects and in response I get a suggestion to stop looking for the perfect less or improve my photography skills .
It's just disappointing, when I expected an interesting discussion instead.

I've just did a comparison (rendering) between 35/1.4 GM, Sigma 35/2 DG DN and Voigt 35/2 APO. I have to say the FE 35/1.4 GM did very well. I think some images posted online have tons of processing which increases contrast/sharpness too much. Out of the camera, I like the rendering so far. The 35/1.4 GM has wider FOV than the Voigt 35/2 APO. The Sigma is just a little wider than the GM. (especially at infinity)

I will post the rendering comparison at different distances as soon as I start the 35/1.4 GM's review thread.

It's hard to believe it's

Mine were processed (hard to say if heavily), but I stated it in one of the posts. Besides, I also posted embedded jpegs, so the same processing, for both lenses in my only comparison post with the Bigma.

Hehe, I understand your points, but I think there are different ways to see it. Some of us like gear as if it were jewellery, I mean, I am really impressed by a perfectly made gear, when something is perfectly assembled, polished and so on. The satisfaction to see a perfect work. The joy to know that I have a "special" object.

The quest of a perfectly centered lens follows the same rule, and I can say I have had 4 perfect lenses... the funny thing is I sold two of them, why?

Because it did not make me take better pictures, because the first one was too heavy (40mm sigma) to carry around, and the second was not fast enough for my taste (the APO 50mm) and I usually prefer using the Nokton (which is well centered, but not perfectly centered compared to the APO)

In the end of the day, I think it is important to have a well centered lens so that you don't have to worry about composing your pictures with a weak area of your gear in mind, but it is a subjective perception, since it depends on how large you will print your pictures.

But looking for a perfectly centered lens is "only" for the joy of having a "special" toy, not for taking better picture

So were mine:

* White balance (some of them, all were "As shot" with WB AUTO in camera and some needed minor adjustment)
* Exposer (all less than half a stop)
* Sharpening (the standard sharpening "for screen") in Adobe Camera Raw.

So nothing that would impact the general impression when judging CA or bokeh (transition zones) or anything else. I also offered all the raw files for download (regarding the series "assorted twigs" for judgement of LoCA and bokeh in the transition zones).

Yeah, I understand. I have dialed it back here for similar reasons I guess. Some here can get way too hung up on stuff that really doesn't matter in real world use. My concerns (when it comes to photography) are much simpler I guess, time to shoot, light, composition. But if that is what they like to focus on and brings them joy (technical stuff) as part of photography then well who am I to judge. Regardless I still like visiting because there are alot of talented people here that post creative and inspiring images.

Anyone using their Sony 35mm f1.4 GM on the Sony A7C? How does it handle? Is it front heavy?

In a similar boat with a long Amazon wait and a new B&H order. Am wondering if I should just get the Sony 40mm for a 35mm range lens and pick up a used 50mm f1.4 for a fast normal prime to share between a Sony A7C and Sony A9.

Hi
It was easier when there were a few lenses only...

I have now had the 35GM, mounted to the A7C, for about two weeks.

My take on the weight distribution is that there is no problem at all. I have an Arca-Swiss plate, full length, mounted on the A7C. The camera and lens combo balances fine at a point close to the lens mount, at the "thin" part of the 35GM lens barrel. The weight is equally shared between your right hand holding the camera and the left hand having the lens resting in it.

A bigger concern may be about the total weight? I know it is for me when travelling and carrying the bag for days. There I think the 35GM is on the heavy side compared to all options (except for the Sigma 35/1.2 of course). As usual the weight is of no problem the moments when actually using the camera.

Mine arrived this afternoon from B&H. I was able to do a brick wall test and a brief comparison against the Bigma. I think the GM is going to be my choice whenever I am taking multiple lenses and 35mm is just one of them; the size and weight are much more appealing. I also see the GM as the better choice for the flatlay food photography I do because it has much lower distortion and less field curvature that makes it better for shooting any planar surface. I also see the GM as better for landscape photography where it's

I used to own the Sigma 1.2 and just got my 35 GM (actually I ended up with two as my B&H and Adorama orders both arrived). I agree that, from what I'm seeing so far, the Sigma would be my choice with portraiture. What I'm trying to figure out is whether I want to keep the 35GM for other types of shooting or pick up the Batis 40 again. I liked using the Batis 40 for food photography since it allowed me to get really close - I had to stop down for depth of field, so a large aperture isn't really important in that situation.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear it handles well! I also use a base plate on my a7c. The weight to me is a concern - it's surprisingly heavy on the specs - but lens seems to be a notch above the 40mm f2.5 and I also have the 28-60mm which is my good enough lens for the A7C. I'm thinking of a "lightweight" 20mm, 35 or 40mm, 85mm type kit.

Just received my 35GM. This lens is way smaller and lighter than expected. Feels premium but not fragile. Balances very well with my A9. Love the results I'm seeing so far. I seriously have zero complaints. This is as good as I've ever experienced when it comes to "What I want" from a 35mm.

Now B&H is saying they have no ETA for the lens. This is after someone told me over the phone that the ETA is later this week (so, today) or early next week. Don't know who to believe, but I guess I'll stand pat. Pretty stupid of me to cancel my initial preorder with Adorama, as it seems they fulfilled most, if not all, of those.

Oh well, it's not like I'm going out shooting a whole bunch right now anyway. Yeah, that's what I tell myself to feel better.

Not sure how many use Best Buy, but I do since it was my first credit card when I turned 18. I am now double that age and it has stayed with me. Anyways, I placed an order with them on 06MAR2021, and it shipped today. Their website though says sold out so its not taking any more orders. Not sure who else ordered from them but it appears they are shipping their entire stock today. I say entire stock because I received an e-mail from them 3 weeks ago saying they expected to get their shipment in on or around the 16APR and will ship out around that time frame. If they did not ship the lens o/a 16APR they would cancel my order.

Congrats! Yeah it may be area dependent. After my expected delivery date with Amazon was pushed from April 12th to between May 9th and June 14th, I ordered at B&H, Adorama, and Best Buy (should've done that to begin with). In the Denver area, Best Buy says expected date for pickup is April 27th. Fingers crossed. I'm sure the upcoming Sigma 35 1.4 will be a great lens at a better price, but flare resistance is very important to me, and I'm betting that the 35GM will have better flare performance than the upcoming Sigma. The images posted by those who have received the 35GM have me sold and now very impatient to get it.

I preordered from B&H April 5 over the phone so I could do in-store pickup. Clearly in retrospect I should have ordered online when the store was closed for passover and I decided to take plunge, and then call them to switch the delivery method later. Anyways, the salesperson on the phone told me they expected 2000 in the initial shipment and there were a couple thousand people ahead of me in the queue. He also said that included around 500 preorders that had shown up just that morning, I think meaning they had accumulated online during the 9 days or so the store was closed. I think all that tracks w/ Specfoto's earlier comment that they filled their initial shipment and the remaining preorder list might be around 1000, give or take.

I had to stop by the store for something else on Wednesday and asked the worker at the pickup counter to check on my preorder. He told me it was on manufacturer backorder and had no idea when the next shipment from Sony would arrive. I don't know if he was looking at his version of what I see with online tracking or if he would have had access to additional supply information, if it existed. I'm hopeful that the rep that spoke w/ Specfoto was correct and another 2000 lenses are due any day. Hopefully they weren't just confused and accidentally referring to the 2000 in the initial shipment. All that said, I guess we just have to wait and see. Fingers crossed!

Yeah, I think there are some folks at B&H that clearly know what's up and some that are just looking at what the customer sees. I'm with you, fingers crossed!

35GM arrived. Weather sucks today, but obligatory gear photos.

I still think if a compact 35 is the priority, the 35i is the way to go. 35i is definitely materially smaller. Paired with the a7c, I get rx1rii feels from the Sigma 35i...not so much with the GM.

The BIGma OTOH....

I had placed three preorders - one with Adorama, one with B&H and one with Allen’s Camera in PA. I’ve been trying to support more local businesses, but Allen’s hasn’t yet received any 35 GMs at all so I cancelled that order. My orders from Adorama and B&H arrived last week with my Adorama order arriving first. I never even opened the box from B&H. I was going to return it but if anyone would like it I would sell it for exactly what I paid in the sealed shipping box from them and email a copy of the original invoice. I wouldn’t mind helping out a fellow FM member.
