It's a very good idea for those looking to get a scarce, good lens at a discount. For you not so much. So be careful with the detractors, they may be biased......
The meaning of “perfect” should be clear to anyone.
Simply, that lens is not perfect.
But if you’re happy with it I’m happy for you, both.

Can I ask your opinion of a 35mm GM that I received this week.
Here are the four corners (focused with AF to at the object when in the center of the frame then manual focus and not touched):

The top right corner seems a bit soft (...)
Would you keep this lens?
What happens when you focus at the corner? How much do yuo have to stop down to get that corner as sharp as the other four points of interest? How large portion of the image is affected?
Looking at your sample I think I would keep the lens and not worry about it. That is based on my preferences which include an opinion about corners in general. They are almost never of any interest).
My copy is similar but in that case it is the bottom right corner. There is something not 100% correct inside the lens.
Considering I can repeat the test at f/1.8 and the problem goes away, and
how much I dislike discussions with service centers claiming "the lens is performing within specifications", and
that any action will cost time/money, leave me without the lens for an unknown time,
and in the end any action won't make my images look any better at all...
...I would keep it. But, if you can get it exchanged, swiftly, for a lens making you happy (always a lottery it seems) then you'll probably feel better. That's also not un-imporant. I can understand that.

Eye on the ball April 12 is tomorrow. Not so sure I want it but I'm going through with it. Can always sell it on the board if someone needs it but like to test for sure

Really looking forward to your test, Guy! I have this feeling you might like it more than you think, and Big Bronco will look good on it. Give it a whirl.

Ok, so a quick sharpness comparison using my decentering scene (happy to report my GM seems to be perfectly centered, that is always the worse test to make).
I'm using f1.4 for both lenses in all shots (previous posts too), unless stated otherwise.
Second, corners at 100%.
One note though, my Bigma is a bit decentered, so the left side is better than the right. As posting the weaker side would not add anything to an already clear (imho) comparison, I'll post only the left side. I think this also means that the left side of my Sigma is a bit better than the left side of a perfectly centered Bigma. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-t7FB8nk/0/71535b83/X4/i-t7FB8nk-X4.png
I did some rendering comparison shots today, but I'm a bit hesitant to post them because I didn't really have a stable setup so there are some lightning, framing and/or focus differences (and I've learned while doing a similar 85mm comparison some time ago that sometimes even a small difference in focus point results in different background rendering).
The second thing is that these were really hardcore conditions, rather harsh, still winter-ish light coming through some openings in the woods, so definitely a test for the best... but we're talking about two top tier lenses available for e-mount after all.
So, I'll post one scene at f1.4, focus at about 4m on the wooden thingy holding one side of the hammock together, a bit different patches of light coming through between the pictures, make of that what you will .
These are again embeded fullsize jpegs, I can post raws if anyone wants.
I'll just preface it by saying that I think under these conditions the GM is closer to the CV rather than the 35i from Fred's recent comparison, so you have been warned .
I also took a lot of normal, great pictures with the GM this weekend, so please keep in mind this is only a torture test meant to show the differences between the two 35mm giants (well, physically only one of them is a giant).

I don't know why but for these kind of shots I always feel 35mm is the best. I know you're supposed to use something longer like 85mm or at least 50mm but I never seem to get captures I like as much using those...

I prefer 35mm for documentary photos. The wide FOV is useful for pulling more of the background into the scene. Hard to tell a story when you compress the background too much. You lose all the context

I don't know if Fred will be swapping this image thread with another one, but I assume we should continue posting pictures here in the meantime.
From a recent trip to Koh Samet. Variable F stops. All edited to some degree but no edits to soften OOF areas. Normal exposure, color, some contrast. Please pardon any subpar edits. In particular, I am not an accomplished landscape photographer...
I like this lens becoming more "painterly" as you get close to your subject, more than other lenses I tried I think: DSC00298-c1-27 by Jan U, on Flickr

B&H GM 35 page now shows "Expected availability: End of Apr 2021"
Maybe B&H is already out of April 12, 2021 inventory or they just updated the April 12th availability date? Anyone receive April 12th GM 35 shipping emails from B&H?
p.86 #16 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)
I ordered at 7a EST on 1/14. Mine previously said available 4/12 but has been updated to Coming Soon. I know there are bigger problems in the world than people getting a new lens but communication from Sony/B&H would be nice.

Mine on order is now saying backordered end of April. Not making me happy
Good idea, I checked my order placed maybe 1-2 minutes of preorder availability and see the "Backordered" label too.
At this point, I wonder how many preorder'ers have moved on since this whole cosmetic ring saga then the ship stuck in the Suez Canal went down. Not like emount is wanting for 35mm choices.
Personally, I'm in no big hurry for this lens and it doesn't cost me anything to be on a list, so maybe I'll end up being last man standing when it finally ships to the USA market

My guess is B&H is communicating as soon as they can. I expected a 35GM availability update after they came off of one of their traditional lengthy holidays which was April 11th, I think.
