Besides, he certainly has a point even if people don't want to hear it. I think many here can't deny that (and I can't exclude myself from being driven by GAS sometimes).

I can exclude myself.

But not this time

I also am wondering a great deal about the true focal length at different distances.

It goes the other way from what I've seen, so it gets closer to 40mm at close distance...

eh I own my GAS. I don't "need" most of the gear I own. Any legit photographer could produce photos on much lesser gear.....even 10 year old DSLR gear that you can get for a bargain now. I know this personally because its not like the photos I produced 10 years ago are terrible by todays standards lol. I have the portfolio to back my skills as a photographer up. But I fully admit to loving the gear too. Nothing wrong with that!

I am much more susceptible to wanting new gear than my wife ;-) .
The 35 GM looks great. I recently sold the 35 ZA before the GM was announced in anticipation of price drops and my 24 TS II. So there is some money in my war chest ;-)

Which for me, photos only, is probably a slight benefit.

Yeah, I don't really mind it but it's something to be aware of, especially when it's that pronounced...

The much maligned 35 ZA renders beautifully. It was my workhorse until I picked the Sigma 35 1.2 up....which is a better lens all around. To your point earlier, the Sigma is massive, but for paid work the size is a non issue. Nothing says GFTO my way like a massive lens sometimes.

My wedding/portrait kit is pretty much built out. It's my compact personal gear that has my G.A.S. flaring these days...especially because of COVD. I'm only tempted by the GM because there isn't a compact medium wide angle FE lens that renders well except the CV40....which I also own because I have a problem, but there's a time and place for that lens when you have 4 young kids. Would I be crazy enough to own the 35 GM AND the sigma 35 1.2? It depends on how poorly the Sigma 35 f2 renders.

We use 2 Sigmas and find them great. Sometimes less weight is nice though, e.g. when having a destination wedding. The only real issue we have with the Sigma is the strong flare it produces the way we shoot. If the Sony is clearly better here, I might replace one Sigma.

Well sold my A7C that was not getting as much use as I had planned. Great camera but still always found myself grabbing my R4 or A9. Returning the 35mm 2.8 ZA today since I am in the return period. Nice lens that I bought to go with the A7C and very sharp on my A9 and previous A7C but left me wanting when I tried it on my R4. Anyway now I am in the 35mm 1.4 GM camp. Excited that it will be a great one.

Youtubers really hyped this lens. I'm still not sure how it really performs in many aspects like rendering, flare sunstar and CA.

I'm afraid there's often a lack of critique on youtube and the typical mainstream channels. It is easy to praise any product, but hard to spend more than a week with any lens (product) in order to give to the audience a real review. Almost always I know in advance what the headline will be anytime any brand releases any lens/camera. What is the point of reviewing gear when almost everything is near perfect? Of course there are exceptions. One (which I love) is this site. The other one (not less beloved) is Phillip Reeve's web.

Of course, there's another option: almost everything is in fact perfect nowadays. In that case, we can be happily blind.

I'd be nervous if the 24GM didn't exist. But it does, and I can't see Sony screwing this one up.

I currently only own the FE 35 1.8. I really like that little lens and I've gone back and forth between getting the 1.4 ZA, The Sigma 1.2, and waiting on this lens. So far I'm really liking the looks of the GM and it looks to be an overall improvement on the ZA 1.4.

I wouldn't say that Sony could screw it up...but there's a give and take with lens design, so I'm curious to see what they prioritized here. Will it be like the 85GM that prioritizes bokeh and glow, giving up some microcontrast and bite? Or will it be more the 135GM that is better corrected, has a stronger contrast and apparent sharpness but busier harsher bokeh?

This can mean a lot for a wide angle lens where so much of the background is pulled I to the frame.

It’s their 12th G Master lens and sounds like it basically updates/replaces the 35 Zeiss 1.4 which was made before GM was even a thing. I bet it’ll be a great lens, I hope so at least!

From what I've seen the bokeh has looked really good to me. Sharpness I'm not worried about either. The good thing about You tube is people need clicks to make money. The best way for someone to differentiate themselves to get clicks is talking about any flaws (like bokeh) when everyone is raving about a lens. We have not seen any of that. So I look at that as a positive from the you tube crowd even though there are only a very few I take seriously. It's looking as good as I hoped, not worried. It's really the last lens in my kit and I'm done! All I need now is an A7cii with at least 42mp and I'm done there as well.
