p.44 #1 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)

I caved and pre-ordered. I have a stellar copy of the 1.4 ZA that I've actually been quite happy with (symmetrical and very sharp wide open). Not expecting that I'll necessarily see a dramatic difference with the GM, but I'm getting the impression that there's enough of an improvement to make it a worthwhile upgrade. The fact that the GM seems to have a bit more color/contrast wide open tipped me over the edge.

I think I'm too attached to my Loxia 35 to sell it once the GM arrives, but we'll see..

Fresh review here:

complete with flare, "thin branches against the sky" and coma testing.

The flare pic (toddler with toy) is something really worth seeing, lots of "rendering" going on there.

That's a great test (mounted size comparison!), though the same site claims in their Sigma f1.2 review (https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f%3D253%26t%3D6011587):

From the following pictures It can be seen that the anti-glare performance of f/1.2~f/16 is excellent

which I'd say is a bit controversial or the translation is wrong and the paragraph is not really about glare/ghosting...

Anyways, I don't see any rendering in the "Flare and Ghost" unfortunately, but I think every lens will flare if you try hard enough (some more creatively than others)...

CA/fringing seems visibly higher than the big Sigma, although the conditions of the test seem more demanding for the GM (and it's also A7RIV vs A7RIII). Either way, corrected or stopped down to f2, it looks good enough to me and that was my main worry about the GM at the moment .

You, sir, are a true inspiration for people like me.

I have been really conflicted since the GM announcement and don't want to sell Sigma 35/1.2 (I generally have a hard time selling my old lenses, as I love them all for one reason or another). Mind says dump Sigma and get the GM and the heart says look at Sigma images and don't be crazy, but I love the idea of keeping it and adding GM.

So your equating someone's "smartness" based on a so called impulse buy? That says more about you than anything else. For most here this is a hobby, who are you to determine what is smart for someone or not. That said I do enjoy chuckling every time you post because I love that avatar action pose. It lends so much credibility to your comments.

Dunno, after seeing the GM 12-24 zoom flare tests, I was expecting equal or better from a GM prime....

Yep, me too (though 1.4 vs 2.8...) but they need to be done in a controlled manner.
Unfortunately this site tests them differently:

&feature=emb_logo
vs

&feature=emb_logo

and you can still see some flare in the 12-24GM video...

I don't think flare resistance will be a weakness of the 35GM, though indeed it might not be at the same level as 12-24GM:

With our usual test methods, there is almost no glare or ghosts in sight. The performance is very good! But this time I just had a chance to capture a very high-contrast situation

vs

Although it cannot be said that there is no at all, but I can say that it has greatly reduced the generation of ghosts.

So who knows how the GM zoom would fare in the same conditions...
We need to wait for Fred's comparison to be sure .

I think there is too much speculation. Most here, shooting regularly, should know that there are so many parameters affecting flaring/ghosts. One single flare test isn't helping at all and it doesn't matter who does it.

Does the focus breathing demonstration suggest that this lens might function as the long-desired 28mm at closer distances? At infinity the new 35 seems a bit wider than the Sigma 35/1.2--but what is the effective focal length at, say, 1.5 meters?

I also am wondering a great deal about the true focal length at different distances.

Glad to be of service! The way I see it, the Sigma rendering and the GM rendering are very different, and evoke different emotions in me (given that the GM renders like the 24GM). I prefer the dreamy and pastely effect of the Sigma for some situations and the vibrant colors of the Sony for others.

This 35 mm 1.4 GM lens is a really exciting release.
It ticks a lot of boxes for me, and could potentially replace the different 35 mm lenses I have.

Looking forward to a real world review here. I am most interested in rendering of the image (flow from in focus to background) and less so with absolute sharpness. I really like the mfd for this lens too.

One of my biggest concerns is the large amount of vignetting. This is probably due to the balance of size and optical quantity that Sony has worked with. Keeping my fingers crossed on all these calculations working out to be great.

The only lens with a hood in that pic is the Sigma

The Camera Size website is an amazing mix of helpful and frustrating. They have one Voigtlander lens, the 110mm, and it's strangely obliqued, not sitting securely at the mount. There are mixes of lenses with and without hoods, sometimes a choice of either (some of the Loxia and Batis lenses). There is very little consistency. It's as if whoever setup the page went on a creative binge in the beginning, but retired shortly thereafter.

Well, they already tipped the balance towards size when they did the FE 35/1.8 (which has strong vignetting too), so one might have expected a different dirrection with the GM.

Sony has really been all about size since the beginning of E-Mount, both for better and worse.

I just found a very good transitional bokeh comparison at Gordan's review of the gm f1.4 35mm at 7:35 min mark when he is walking towards the camera.

It compares the sigma f1.2 together with the gm at various distances. you can view how the bokeh changes with different distances.

I find the sigma bokeh softer and more well behaved at various distances but this is very subjective. Both looks good but the sigma does look slightly better especially at the starting. The difference is pretty minor though...

The AF is much faster on the gm though. I need to try the AF of the sigma on my A9 to see if it is tracking well. I don't remember being irritated by the AF much though using the sigma.

I’m curious to see the differences in character, color, and bokeh (besides bokeh balls). We know the GM is sharper, at least across the frame, and we know the bokeh balls are nicer (no onion rings), but besides that, I think there is an opportunity for the ZA to have appeal still in the final rendering compared to the GM.

Chris_88 wrote:
Not sure, whether this has been posted already, but the staff of Tokyo-based camera store MapCamera got to check out the lens. Their report complete with size comparisons can be found here.

At the bottom of the article, there is a comparison between the GM and the 35 ZA. They noted how the former was tack sharp wide open at the point of focus, while the latter had a glow to it.

The AF on the Sigma is quick enough for most use cases easily. My wife and I both use the Sigma at weddings on A9ii/A7riv without any problem.
If size and weight isn't an issue, the Sigma is fantastic and I don't see a reason to switch. But size and weight is of course enormous, so I can understand people well in deciding to get rid of some weight.

Besides, he certainly has a point even if people don't want to hear it. I think many here can't deny that (and I can't exclude myself from being driven by GAS sometimes).
