Why do you feel the need to write things like this in every new lens and camera thread?

You’re happy with your current setup and don’t need the latest and greatest - great, happy for you. Why try and bring people’s enjoyment/excitement away from new products though? I’ve pre-ordered this lens, does that mean I’m hoping to “finally take great photos”?

It’s unbelievable that a bunch of grown men (assuming most of us here are guys; to the women, I apologize but I doubt you’d fall to the level of pigheadedness here).

Page 42 of this thread is just toxic as hell. Some people feed off putting others down. In other words, there’s a few bullies in here. You know who you are. Get a life.

How about we support each other and be happy for those who are excited to try out a new lens and also be happy for those that are happy with their current lenses?

Instead, I see a bunch of crapping on others for:

A) Selling their other 35mm lenses
B) Spending money that isn’t theirs
C) Justifying keeping their current lenses
D) Presuming others are passively claiming to be able to take better photos by spending money (that’s a first for me)

Happy MLK day, guys. Treat each other nicely.

People upgrading to the latest bodies and lenses is part of the photography ecosystem and the cycle of life. I have bought lenses from people here a few years ago and then sold some lenses after learning some stuff here and finding different lenses to buy. The system wouldn't work if no one ever upgraded. Having an active used market benefits everyone who does this, whether pros or hobbyists.

Agree I shoot commercially for decades even before Polaroid. 45 years ago. You know how hard it is to shoot with over 20 strobes on a set without any I mean any means of seeing if your even remotely close to nailing the image. All these upgrades and technology advances are critical. You have no idea what digital has done for photography. ALL my clients will not deal with film anymore. These upgrades are very useful to our success in the industry. Of course experience ,ability and talent count a ton but as experienced as I am there is no doubt I won't upgrade as I see the need. It certainly is part of our growth not to mention the support for this industry

Nice comment

I have both the sigma 35 f2 and the 35gm o. Pre order. This is a pretty key focal length for me in both my personal and paid photography so I really want get a feel for the two lenses for myself to see what the best approach is. Right now I own the sigma 35 1.2, but it's too big for personal use, so I lean on sigma 45 f2.8 and fe 35 1.8 when I want to go small.

Question for is if the 35 GM really is a goldilocks lens or is it a jack of all trades, master of none. Right out the gate my thoughts for personal use is that like the 24gm, it's pretty small, but I wouldn't consider it compared to the f2/f1.8 primes, and I'm not personally losing sleep over f2 vs f1.4.

It all comes down to rendering for me...if the
sigma 35 f2 renders nicely like the sigma 45, then I will probably pass on the GM. Also I'm sure the 35 GM will render well, but will it be more 85gm or 135gm? The sigma 35 1.2 tenders beautifully

For me two lenses (35 1.4 ZA and Sigma 35/2) are more complex to own, use and maintain. The GM does almost everything better than these two lenses, and weight and size is right in the middle of the two. So I happily carry about 100-150 g more for a stop of light more (compared to the sigma). The Sigma 35/2 is not that small and light, with hood and caps it is ~400g. I have zero regrets selling these lenses, the 35 1.4 za was put to good use documenting family life and holidays the last 2.5 years. The 35/2 was an experiment, but that is OK as well, it is a hobby...

And maybe now that I (will) have two sets of near-perfect primes (for my use), it is time for me to do what I did after buying my HiFi speakers 12 years ago - go to the forums, get info, test & make informed buying decision and the stay clear of the (gear) forums and enjoy the music (or in case of camera gear - take photographs and work on getting better at it)

I admit that I sometimes had a difficult time enjoying my 35 F1.4 ZA, because it got so much beating around here (and on another well-known website based in Germany, which I used to follow) - so I made sure that it was OK, and it is really more than OK on my 24 MP A7III, at least that is what I took from my testing (http://morsdorf.ch/gear/sony-35-mm-1-4-za/) and the 1000+ keepers (favs) of my kids growing up. Still, if all the people say it is crap you start to believe and you will notice the imperfections (e.g. that slight glow and loss of contrast at f1.4) even more.

So I will not repeat that mistake with the GM (I probably won't even test it for decentering) and I was hesitating to do it with my Sigma 35/2. Ultimately, the test should be whether you enjoy the process of taking images with your gear and whether you like the results. The Sigma 35/2 fares extremely well in this regard, but for family and kids I'd like to have a faster lens.

If the ZA resulted in all those images of your kids growing up any cost/loss regarding the lens is pretty irrelevant That's the important part.

I do think the de-centering test is pretty important though. We're buying a £1500 lens, it should be spot on!

So 35mm f/1.4's are fairly common lenses among the various camera brands, and this is the first one on the Sony platform that we're assuming is going to be sharp and reliable. Why are some so shocked that people are buying it?

Same thing happened with the 24 GM. I kept getting asked "why don't you just buy the Batis 25...well....I find myself often in low-light with a 24mm and preferred f/1.4...just like did back in my Canon days with my 24L. So I was happy the 24GM was released.

I don't see 35mm as some exotic focal length with people making excuses for why they just gotta own the thing. And f/1.4 gives one advantages slower lenses don't have.

For me- my sticking point is my CV 40...don't want to get rid of it for traveling and landscapes, and couldn't justify owning both the 35 GM and the CV 40. We'll see if that changes as time goes forward.

I for one intend to keep the 35GM, Sigma 35/1.2 and the CV40's. But maybe I spoil myself. It's the FE35 that I'm wavering on selling now.

Yea I have the FE 35 2.8...not selling that no matter what. It's a sharp copy that's perfect for my A7c when it gets the call instead of the A7R3.

The CV 40's size could make one justify keeping it along with the 35GM for sure, especially if it's a focal length that you use a lot.

That's my situation. I use the CV40 probably 85-90% of the time. And I love the actual using it - Mainly landscapes & woodlands, some people. But sometimes people are a pain (literally!!) & that's where I'm hoping the 35GM will step in. Sharp, fast aperture, nice rendering..... We'll often spend the day hiking/walking & it would be nice to be able to hand the camera to my other half or kids & have them take photos of me/us. And make it easier/quicker for me to get images of them without faff, etc

Whether I keep the CV40 only time will tell. It'll depend how I gel with the GM & also the used value of the CV40. I could keep it for when I do go out alone & leave the GM at home on those occasions..... I really don't know yet. I do also have the M mount CV40/1.4 Classic too so..... More decisions.

No rush though

Wow. You are spoilt :-) I think i have a buyer for my Sigma 35mm 1.2. I hope I dont regret it! I adore the look of the lens but to have 90% of that in a smaller package with faster and hopefully slightly more accurate AF is too good to pass up. I was one of the ones burnt with Sigma's firmware debacle last year which left a bad taste. In dealing with Sigma over it, It makes you acutely aware that you don't have the same comeback as you would with the manufacturers lenses.

Found a really nice release day video—definitely not as comprehensive as Gerald's video, but the nicest samples I've seen yet. Edited, but meh. Still shows the quality of the lens.

complete with flare, "thin branches against the sky" and coma testing.

The flare pic (toddler with toy) is something really worth seeing, lots of "rendering" going on there.

Does the focus breathing demonstration suggest that this lens might function as the long-desired 28mm at closer distances? At infinity the new 35 seems a bit wider than the Sigma 35/1.2--but what is the effective focal length at, say, 1.5 meters?
