p.31 #1 · Pre-order: Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,399)

I purchased Sigma 35/1.2 last week and my jaw is still on the floor from its amazing IQ. The Sony seems as good, if not better, than the Sigma. Kudos to Sony for keeping these high quality GM lenses small and compact and not go the Canon and Nikon route of making oversized giant lenses. That being said, this lens is almost the same weight as Tamron 28-75mm zoom. I don't think it will be pleasant to walk around with this lens on a full frame body. It certainly is better than Sigma 35/1.2, but nobody buys that lens hoping they will get used to its weight.

I am going to keep Sigma 35/1.2 as my indoors and around the neighborhood lens and use Sony Zeiss 35/2.8 as my walk around/travel lens for now. Those of you pre-ordering this lens tomorrow, you are the real MVP. As someone else said earlier, next holiday season when half of you realize that 35mm is not the FL for you and Sony is discounting this lens ~ 30% (like they did for 24 GM last month) is when I will happily buy this lens for $1000 on B&S Forum. Cheers!

sigma is just shooting themselves in designing a f1.2 vs f1.4. If a f1.4 could save like 200grams of weight, I will not be so tempted to switch. The weight of the f1.2 is just too much.

You know there is a weight issue when two 35/1.4 GM lenses are lighter than one 35/1.2 Sigma.

It should balance pretty well IMHO, it's much shorter than the Sigma 35/1.2. Given the weight, and the fairly short length, I'd be surprised if it's really cumbersome.

It sounds like it should fit the A7C nicely

This samplr show quite a lot of ca, similar to my 24m gm

Very smooth transition on the fence at right going into the distance.

What an amazing lens! In comparison with the Leica SL35 F2's MTF, the Sony looks to be even better. Field curvature looks very low in the samples from Lenstip. Hard to tell from Gordon's samples at CameraLabs. Clearly a step up from the Sigma 35 1.2 at wider apertures in many ways, apart from slightly worse falloff for the Sony wide open, and unfortunately moderately worse falloff when stopped down. Remains to be seen exactly how much the vignetting is, since OOC Jpegs are not a good way to tell.

Lighter, faster/better AF, more refined polishing and grinding of the glass elements (smoother bokeh balls), lower LaCA, apparently slightly lower LoCA, much less distortion, much less astigmatism, seemingly better transitions into OOF regions, notably lower field curvature making it possible to image flat subjects wide open F1.4 and have sharp focus all over, much better rendering of PSFs off axis, noticeably better resolution both on and off axis! Wow. Not interested in the Sigma 35 F2 i-series anymore

A very sad state of affairs. The truth is that "what the heart loves, the will chooses, and the mind justifies". Except we never like to admit to it.

People just "love" or "don't like" or even "hate" a lens. And they pick their favorite. And then they use all those tests in order to justify to themselves (and unfortunately, in no civil terms, to others on the forum too) why they didn't make a different choice.

Let's be honest about it. And please feel free to love whatever lens you fancy, and then unapologetically buy and enjoy it.

But where would this forum be without a good lens trashing thread once in a while?

Interesting take? So you want the GM but you feel it's somehow only worth it when you get it for 30% less. Yet you just paid more than the GM for the same focal length lens that's twice as heavy? Hmmmm.

I think 24mm GM that I have is outstanding lens. 35mm is my most favorite focal length.
I expect Voighlander 35mm APO-Lanthar, but this 35mm GM would be excellent series of GM series.
50mm GM does not attract me, because I already have Voigtlander 50mm APO-Lanthar that is sufficient enough. This 35mm is most anticipated lens ever among all Sony lenses.

I think it's safe to say that the 35/1.4 GM has above average axial CA correction for a 35mm lens but color error may still be visible under extreme conditions.

how do you rank the 35mm gm in terms of LoCA vs the 24mm gm then?
Honestly, lots of reviews say the 24mm IQ is perfect but my copy isn't. The LoCA can be intrusive after owning the lens for years. I am not talking about pixel peeping.

The sigma 35mm f1.2 LoCA is lower than the 24mm gm.

Pointing out the shortcomings and strengths of a lens is indispensable for this forum since we all use it as a resource. It would be great to see some side by side comparisons showing the new 35/1.4 GM compared to other 35mm lenses in regards to axial CA, rendering, resolution. flare, etc.
I will have the Sigma 35/2 DG DN and Voigtlander 35/1.2 III to compare. Perhaps other FM members will have other lenses to compare to the new GM.

I see noticeable LoCA on 24/1.4 GM wide open images and was hoping the 35/1.4 GM had better correction. It seems to be the case from the samples I've seen so far.
The 35/1.4 GM also seems be capable of higher resolution off-axis just based on the cameralabs review. Not sure if it has similar FC suppression or coma performance though. I will write a review on it whenever it arrives here.

Yes the tests are definitely useful, but them alone can't fully explain why some people would prefer one of the existing 35mm lenses (for example) over the others. There isn't any winner on all criteria (aka some small, 200g 35/1.2 that is also the sharpest with the smoothest bokeh but no LoCA etc).

There's a bunch of fresh video reviews posted at our favorite rumors site. Beware of Tony's, for some reason he's trying to look and sound like Bad Santa.

Lenstip review - "Editor's Choice":
https://www.lenstip.com/598.11-Lens_review-Sony_FE_35_mm_f_1.4_GM_Summary.html

Pros:
-solid and weather-sealed mechanical construction,
-sensational image quality in the frame centre,
-very good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,
-good image quality on the edge of full frame,
-negligible lateral chromatic aberration,
-lack of problems with spherical aberration,
-moderate distortion,
-very good coma performance,
-practically zero astigmatism,
-excellent performance against bright light,
-very nice out-of-focus areas,
-silent and quick autofocus.

Cons:
-huge level of vignetting that can be just weakly influenced by stopping down.

In comparison Sigma 35mm f2 review, 1 stop difference shows in sharpness and bokeh + more vignetting due to smaller size:

B&H preorder is tomorrow morning 7AM ET

I don't think they've ever had EDU discounts on preorders as far as I know. If anything you might see it a month or two down the road like with the 12-24GM, but this looks like it'll be in massive demand like the 24GM was, and in these COVID times I can only imagine what supply is going to be like when initial stock runs out.

Edit:

Just checked B&H and they're still not offering the EDU discount on the 24GM even after all this time, so there's no way they'll discount this one when it launches.
