p.5 #1 · Leica M to Nikon Z AUTOFOCUS adapter NOW available

About a week or two ago I read a rumor that Techart was going to launch a new version of their TZM-01 adapter. If that's correct, I think it may be because they had some production or functional issues (as has been reported here earlier). When checking the Techart website, they have the adapter listed for PRE-order (see link below). To me this suggests that the rumor may be correct.

Another reason for not having the adapter ready for sale now could be that the first batch was sold out of course, but why don't we see new reviews of the TZM-01 popping up then? Even Richard Wong who perhaps did the first YouTube review (on November 11th) of the MTZ11 still haven't done a review of the Techart TZM-01 yet, even though he said he would do a comparison review soon? No, this appears to be a "rushed to market, quickly withdrawn" scenario.

Further update on how the IBIS works with the MTZ11:

I checked with my 15mm lens and I actually get better results without IBIS than with, when using the MTZ11 (even though the EXIF show correct focal length). This strongly suggests that the IBIS doesn't get the focal length "message" from the adapter.

I have also gone back to firmware 1.3.1 because the beta firmware isn't doing AF as it should.

I picked up this adapter a couple months ago for my Z50 and it's fun. It's loud, it's not particularly snappy, and it feels kinda bootleg, but it (mostly) works. That said, after the initial novelty factor wore off, I haven't really used it again.

Do you mostly shoot M mount lenses? If not, then I understand.

I primarily shoot M lenses, so for me the adapter offers EXIF data and a somewhat usable autofocus. Hopefully Megadap gets the focal length working with the IBIS (and not just written in EXIF as it is now). To me, that's the dealbreaker at the moment. In fact, if the adapter only offered EXIF data + close focus capability and otherwise worked flawlessly (i.e. IBIS gets the correct focal length info), that would have been enough for me to get a smart adapter. I understand the selling point of autofocus, but to me that's mostly a bonus - as long as the AF gets the focus exact.

Ah, interesting. I primarily shoot M lenses, but on the M system (I have an M10R and M10M). I usually have the 16-50mm pancake mounted on the Z50.

Well, shooting a crop camera with M lenses isn't as nice as with a full frame camera, so that's another good reason to not bother with M lenses on the Z50. Since the Z50 is without IBIS, you lose one of the important advantages going mirrorless instead of shooting on a Leica M camera. After getting my Z6 (which has IBIS), I am not going "back"! I am actually getting it converted for to Ultra Thin sensor glass (at Kolari Vision) for the very purpose of maximizing the compatibility and best performance for M lenses.

Okay, so now there is a new firmware update for the Megadap MTZ11. Quote from the official page:

– Faster AF-S, less focus hunting

– Improved AF-C performance, more accurate face, and eye detection

– Smoother AF-F and more precise continuous focusing

– Default focal length as 50mm (can overwrite the focal length manually)

– Fix extension or retraction problem of the adapter when the camera is off

– Fix the automatic restart of adapter for shooting long exposure photos over 70s

– Fix error in EXIF reading

(I have sent my Nikon Z6 for sensor glass conversion at Kolari Vision, so I can't comment on it.)

Have you tried 15mm on the new firmware yet? This was an initial issue with the Techart TZE-01 as well. Wondering if Megadap got it resolved.

I don't have my Nikon Z6 at the moment. It's at Kolari Vision for UT conversion. Hopefully they fixed the IBIS communication issue with FW 2.0. The update description seems to indicate it without spelling it out.

Should have caught that, sorry. Was thinking the same about the language on the updated firmware but would love confirmation!

Good luck with the conversion, look forward to hearing how AWB performs as well on the Z. It was tricky on the A7 series, but I think/hope that Nikon might handle it better.

What about a 28mm lens, for instance?

It is becoming clear to me, that getting AF to work properly with such an adapter isn't a straightforward task ...

Can you elaborate on this at all? Only ask because early IBIS issues sometimes gave me the appearance of "out of focus" due to motion blur from IBIS over correcting. The wider you got the worse it got (occasionally noticeable at 21mm, fair regualr at 15mm, almost unusable at 12mm.

Is there a sharp plane of focus anywhere? Or is the whole thing blurry?

The Techart TZM-01 adapter is now in stock again. A couple of quotes:

"Optimal 4.5mm max. extension to reduce unnecessary damages to the motor and ensure rapid AF speed"
- This might indicate that they have worked on the extension which seems to have been a weak point (regarding the issues users had with the original version).

Also note the P.S. at the end of the description:
"Camera has to be turned OFF before performing any lenses switch or the adapter may become brick."

That warning should turn on the alarm in the ears and eyes of potential buyers. This seems to indicate that there is a possibility of shorting electrical connections by just turning the adapter while it is on the camera and power is on - in other words, in ordinary use. (At least that is how this might be understood.)

Sorry, totally forgot about this.

Around 15-20 feet, it seem focus is good.
For other distance, most of the time front focus, sometime back focus especially close distance.

Regarding the Techart TZM-01 description, I have just been corrected:
The wording: "Optimal 4.5mm max. extension to reduce unnecessary damages to the motor and ensure rapid AF speed" - is exactly the same as in the original text.

That said, the warning: "Camera has to be turned OFF before performing any lenses switch or the adapter may become brick" - is new and should be taken seriously. We will need some testers to check how it actually works and further details on how to avoid "bricking" the adapter.

I just discovered that Peter Zalums did a video test of the Megadap MTZ11 adapter with the new V 2.0 firmware. After testing, he went back to V 1.3.1 since there was too much hunting in video mode with the fast lenses he uses.

In other words, a newer firmware isn't always better. Hopefully Megadap continues to improve the firmware regarding AF performance. (I still haven't gotten my Z6 back from Kolari, so can't comment on it myself yet.)

Thanks Lars, I installed went back to v1.3.1 yesterday. It's better for my Voigtlander 50 f1.2.

I want to give one more try with the stack adapter for Nikon F mount especially for my Nikon 105 DC lens. And ordered the Urth F -> M adapter yesterday and arrived today. It’s perfect fit with the lens and Megadap, it much better than the K&F adapter. There still is a little play between the Z body and Megadap. Is there a way to shims it?

Also learn from the Xitek and Mobile01 users, manually focus close to the target and engage Megadap to lock the focus. It actually works very good this way.
