Thank you for the pics. Looks great the Samyang 35/1.8. I think I could buy it and safe 150 € instead of buying Sony 35/1.8.

I'd really like to, but I don't have a single shot with direct sunlight ... so I was mainly checking MFD performance today, though that's hard with ISO > 1000. I'm not super happy with my copy as the right side is softer than the left side, so I have one very good corner, one very bad and 2 okay-ish. I won't bore you with the corner pics, but a couple of shots at close to MFD (exif reports 0.23m at the lowest) wide open:

Pity about the light and the decentering and the light. Any better luck lately?

I'll probably try a second copy to see if I have better luck...

What’s the AF like on the Samyang 35/1.8? I had the Samyang 35/2.8 and found it to be noisy and not as “confident” as my Sony lenses.

I have just used it once but I think the AF is silent. At least I couldn‘t make out any noises with my copy. As far as speed and reliability is concerned, I cannot comment on it. Have to shoot more.

Good luck! Hope you get a perfect one, if you try one more copy of it.

Thanks, but I'm not sure if I want to play that game again... Also, this lens is becoming sold out quickly here, so I'm not sure if I'm able to try another one that easily actually...

A couple photos showing (hopefully) overall rendering (I think these are pretty demanding: backlight, foliage, often in the corners):

And an unfortunate proof that onion rings are still present with strong light sources (car led lights in this case):

Oh no. Onions!

In this regard, the Sony FE 35/1.8 is better.

Personally I'm not that bothered about onion rings. In the rare cases where they show up, it's just a simple job to smooth them out in lightroom. What is more interesting is that overall it seems this lens renders a lot more pleasing images than the Sony. Especially those mid-distance samples look surprisingly nice and transition zones are rather smooth. So I'm really eagerly waiting mine. I should have it today. I think this is the 35/1.8 I have been waiting for. Just hope I won't get a dud this time, like I did with the 75mm (didn't work at all and had to return it, and bought the 85/1.8).

So far so good. Got mine. At least the lens works and seems to be very sharp already at f/1.8. And I really like the rendering in close indoor situations as well. Tomorrow I'm gonna test it more. (Now it's pitch black outside.)

Good point. But how do you get rid of the onion rings with Lightroom?

Depends. If they bother me, I've used the adjustment brush with negative sharpness to smooth them out. I usually don't bother going to photoshop. I try to keep all my editing in Lightroom only. (To be clear, I didn't use any in these samples as I really didn't encounter any major onion rings.)

Looks nice. Is the bokeh better (smoother?) as the Sony 35/1.8?

That's the general opinion, but I don't have the Sony to compare...

Ok, I have only the Samyang 35/1.8. I will buy the Sony on Friday and compare the bokeh. I think the Sony bokeh is better, because a) no onion rings and b) rounder at the edge and corner.

Onion rings are only visible rarely. And less round shape in the edges gives a little bit of swirl, which is a matter of taste if you like it. But so is the stronger outlining in bokeh balls, which the Sony has more and that makes the bokeh rendering less smooth. This Samyang seems to render pretty decent bokeh which is not that distracting and in certain cases (close up) it's actually really nice.

Where are you guys getting yours from? I really wanted to try it out for an international trip coming up, but everywhere is still on pre-order status.
