Interested in this, as long as the eye AF is good. The Sony version seems great, just expensive. I’m sure this one will hit the $300-400 category not long after release. Samyang seems to have a lot of good options to pair with the a7c

Agreed. I had planned to sell my 18/2.8, but now I'm thinking about hanging on to it until I can see if the a7c is something I'll use.

I don’t care about sharpness wide open, if they prioritize smoother bokeh and transitions, and maybe even a good coma correction for Astro that would be great. And it would distinguish itself from the FE 35

I think this will have the same style as their 75mm, so modern sharp rendering, but let's see...

It is now confirmed that there will be weather sealing and petal shaped hood. Nice! And the same mode switch that the 75mm has that allows using the focus ring as aperture ring. I think this could become my go-to af lens for everyday use, when I'm not in the mood for manual focusing. Might even get the 75mm as well to replace my FE85.

Not too many samples, but from the few there is it looks rendering could be pretty decent. I also don't care about absolute sharpness wide open.

Surprised there's no day 1 reviews for this puppy. Ah well. Now we wait.

Only initial comments is that it looks quite good optically from the image gallery and the provided mtf/diagram. Can't really tell until we get the lens in the hands of more people.

This image from the gallery gives me a mixed feeling:

https://www.samyanglens.com/upload/inspiration/gallery/1612854075.jpg

On the one hand, looks like it's in focus IF suffering from motion blur. But did the photog not know they needed faster than 1/640 to get a clean image or was this the only one that nailed it? If the focus ends up being great... I'm actually really impressed. This will sell like hotcakes.

Only thing I wish were a bit better were the mfd. I suppose I'm a bit spoiled from my CF 40, but it really does add a whole new dimension to shooting out and about.

It's a compact, lightweight and cheap 35 1.8 from a consumer brand... I highly doubt that they will prioritize bokeh and transitions over sharpness. Let's wait for a few reviews...

That astro shot in their gallery looks excellent.
I'm not seeing much, in any, coma/astig.
Bit of purple haloing though.

I like it how they preempted all the "criticism" that usually accompany the launch of a compact 1.8 lens:

"This lightweight F1.8 lens is specifically deisgned for 3 main targets: street photographers, vloggers and Instagrammers who are looking for compact lens with high quality output."

The guys that usually bring up astro, BIF, "portrait with backlit foliage", blur power and other such arguments in order to trash the lens would look so stupid this round, right from the beginning.

They did it with their MF 85 1.4–unusually smooth bokeh and translations for a lens of its class.

And decent central sharpness but nothing special off axis with good bokeh was what the 75 1.8 had.

And it would be a great way to distinguish itself from the other glut of 35mm’s for Sony.

But I am with you, I think it’s wishful thinking—sharpness is the easy sell. Coma might be good though, they have a history of well corrected coma lenses.

Looking at the sample images on the website, it looks to have mediocre bokeh, looks to be quite sharp, well corrected for coma, but has purple fringing wide open. Since coma is good wide open, I'm wondering if by f/2.2 or so of the PF would be minimal by then.

Yeah, seriously. This lens is impressively corrected (gallery lists this shot as WIDE OPEN). AF is most likely better on the Sony 35 (native lens + Sony's new AF motor is a combo unlikely to be beaten) and the MFD is definitely lacking, but other than that... this lens looks like it has everything?

  1. Smallest 35 1.8 on the platform, possibly ever
  2. Sealing at least substantial enough to be easily visible (the Sony's is so minute I think the only reviewers who caught it were Ken Rockwell and the Phoblographer)
  3. What looks like pretty good correction
  4. Brand new AF motor, so while probably not as good as the Sony's, probably pretty good.
  5. Bokeh looks pretty good for a lens of the FL and aperture. More testing needed, of course.
  6. MTF looks like resolution holds up well into the corners.
  7. Aperture ring.

This + the a7c will be just 209g more than the rx1r ii, and will have definitely superior AF, sealing, stabilization, video, aaaaaand you could also pop the other small lenses like the 55 za or the 75 1.8 on it. If it had a better reproduction ratio this would be a no brainier purchase for me as long as the AF is good enough.

I don't find the close focus abilities of the Tamrons all that useful. The Sony FE already had some of the same drawbacks as this lens. They are more palatable at this price. I like the Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 USD, but it is rather bulky and slow.

I do find Samyang's AF less precise/accurate than Sony's own lenses. I have the 18/2.8, 24/2.8, 35/2.8, 45/1.8, and 75/1.8. I have considered used 35/1.4's for $400. I prefer smaller and lighter.

Well I have to say that I'm not impressed by the rendering... This image just looks boring. I'm a bit disapointed

The astro and night shots look great IMO. Some onion rings visible in the bokeh.

I initially thought this was smaller than the Sony, but it's not really. Nice option though for almost half the price.

I think this looks like a really good option too, it’s not a premium lens, but it’s not priced to be and it looks like a very good alternative versus the rest of the field. Personally, from the little I’ve seen, I like the bokeh better than the FE 35 as well.

Not too shabby! The bokeh has a bit of green fringing and onion rings at times, but mechanical vignetting is low and it stays round throughout the frame. Looks plenty sharp, low coma, will be cheap...plenty to like!

Samyang needs to start making all these lenses for the Canon RF mount.

I agree I'd like to see all their AF FE lenses on RF mount. Though this one is probably the least needed, given Canon's own excellent RF 35/1.8 Macro, which is great optically, small, about the same price, and does 1:2.

Only knock on that is AF speed and sound.
