Funny, your post just bumped the thread to the top again.

What if you contribute to this thread because you enjoy discussing the business issues in the camera industry. Not because you like bugging people or watching people fight? Must you still be exiled as you suggest.

In my opinion, any camera related subject is valid. As long as people are not calling each other names, using unacceptable language, or violating official FM rules all is good. If the do violate the rules, it is an issue with the individual poster, not the thread topic.

Isn't easier for you to just not read or post in the thread. Then what harm does it do you?

What is it with self appointed censor want to bees? I notice that many of them have been members for a long time but have never shared a single image with the FM community. In these cases one has to assume they are members to read and post words and opinions the agree with. Buy and sell things. But not share their photographic hobby in the form of images.

Be aware that if you reply to my question the thread will just get bumped to the top again.

I was happy to see this thread buried by 3/4 hours and then someone bumped it. My post is 9 minutes after someone else... my post was literally out of irritation that someone bumped it again.

Well, if it makes you feel any better I think this thread has mostly run its course naturally and will get buried without a boycott anyway.

Sooooooo Funnyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

I think it is clear that 20 frames a second, with target acquisition 60 times a second, completely silent shooting, two magazine slots, and advance grip to shoot in multiple orientations, would be the clear winner here. I wonder who makes such an advanced weapon.

Of course now there is the option for a flame thrower model from another manufacturer.....

Err.

If Nikon would indeed go under, I'd definitely move to Fujifilm G.

A larger sensor fits very well to my shooting.

And you might say they are damn expensive now. They already arent really, the 50R is already quite affordable, even new. Just cannot handle my demands in regards to autofocus performance, but the next generation can.

And in 5-10 years full frame will more and more get so cheap their price hardly has any influence on the price of the camera anymore. Just like it is for APS-C right now already. And 44x33mm will a the same time also get cheaper and cheaper, too.

Thats why I dont understand neither Nikon nor Canon nor Sony (who are producing the sensors for heavens sake) nor anybody else of the big ones has ever bothered to challenge Fujifilm. And the established medium format companies like Hasselblad and Phase One and Pentax and Leica basically have huge problems to still compete at all againsts Fujifilm.

When they left Sony four years alone with full frame mirrorless, look what even Sony managed. And Fujifilm is far more competent than Sony. Even now I have a hard time seeing anyone competing with Fujifilm on medium format.

I'm cracking up.... when I read this thread earlier this morning, this thread was just above the "D700/D3 still a joy to shoot" thread.... I figure you have at least a decade of use out of the D850 if purchased today.

Thats a reasonable estimate. Unless you use it a lot; after all its shutter is only rated for 200,000 actuations. But for a hobbyist that doesnt shoot for hours every day, absolutely. Ten years only have 3650 days, so you could still shoot 60 photos per day and would have only just reached the 200k actuations counter, which is a conservative estimate.

I don't know about that. Sony could produce a very advanced medium format camera body in a relatively short time with its existing in house sensor technology, and porting over all of it's processing, AF, AI, technology. Imagine, medium format with the performance of an a7RIV.

The bigger challenge would be the required new lens line with a new bigger mount. This would take a great deal of time, resources, and money to build out. It would also violate Sony's commitment to a one mount strategy.

Sony is already getting a meaningful chunk of $$$$ from every Fijifilm camera sold. So the financial appeal is also limited.

I doubt we will see it any time in the near future. Likely never.

How big of a market do you think medium format is? Right now with Fuji's APS-C cameras and their medium format system, they have about 5% of the sales. I'd venture to say the vast majority of those sales are from their APS-c system...so that leaves minuscule sales of their medium format system if you look at the big picture. Too small of potatoes for the big boys.

The main takeaway, imo, is "ok, where do we go from here?"

I have been a Nikon fan since 1984. I still have Nikon lenses and bodies I purchased back then plus multiple Nikon dslr cameras and newer lenses.

Last year I purchased a Canon 6dmk2, a 7dmk2 and several Canon lenses (L and USM). I did that not because I was jumping ship, but because it would allow me to continue with either brand if it had better offerings than the other.

I was (somewhat) blindsided by this whold mirrorless trend, but I have no regrets. My D750 and 6dmk2 will become obsolete just as quickly as the newer mirrorless bodies if Nikon folds.

Is Sony the answer then for investing in a long term system? Is it Fuji? Certainly can't be Panasonic or Olympus or even Pentax for that matter. These companies are also facing financial hardships.

I would hate to have to buy into a new system that might be gone within a year or two. Not sure about the rest if you, but imo lenses are expensive.

Where do we look next for investing in system that has growth potential?

Honestly there is no rush to make such a choice. I think the likelihood of any of the big 3 (Nikon, Canon, Sony) failing is very small.

You can continue to use your DSLRs and lenses from either Nikon, or Canon for many years. They will make the same great images for you as they always have. As more people switch to mirrorless there will be an abundance of excellent used lenses to buy.

That being said, it is now very clear the the future of ICL cameras is mirrorless. Personally, I would not invest in buying new DSLR cameras or lenses for those cameras. I would only buy used from now on.

Sony of course doesn't have a viable DSLR base to grow from. Switching to Sony means a 100% commitment to mirrorless, and all new lenses and accessories. If you had decided to switch to mirrorless a couple of years ago, the only real choice was Sony. That is no longer the case.

With either Nikon or Canon you can ease your way into the mirrorless future by buying a mirrorless body, an adapter, and continue to use your older lenses as you build your native mirrorless lens collection.

We are actually still pretty early in the transition to mirrorless cameras. Over the course of the next couple of years I expect the offerings of the major camera companies to become more and more similar in both capability and price. This was the case in the film days, and the DSLR days. I see no reason to believe that it will change when the market is primarily a mirrorless one. Canon has already released some pretty spectacular mirrorless bodies. Nikon drags a little behind currently, but is going to release a couple of new bodies (z6s/Z7s) shortly that have great potential.

So, the short answer is don't panic. No matter what happens you have plenty of time to watch what develops. Even in the worst case, I don't see Nikon folding. Maybe Nikon gets smaller, more boutique, possibly more high end, merged with another brand, or a combination of these. But the Nikon brand, design philosophy, cameras and lenses, will be around a long, long time.

Relax.

Sony absorbed KM and the dslrs/dslts were good. Progressed it seemed slowly and rather more slowly in the way of third party support. I'd kept several of my Maxxum lenses but was never compelled to move back after I'd gone to the Nikon D200. I suppose Sony could do the mirror-less side of things and "Nikon" badge dslrs. I don't see an easy/happy way to go from 4 lines - 2 dslr, 2 mirror-less to one of each.

damn nice nikon to provide these canon idiots with a nice place to sit and photograph the game from, canon had them all set up in the washrooms with a white throne to sit on that matches the purdy white lens they use

Canon is the official camera of the New York Yankees and Nikon is the official camera of the New York Mets.

Nikon choose poorly

Nikon will announce withdrawal from the US market in January 2021.
