I bet they kept the higher res EVF and sensor for higher up in the line. But I agree—I was hoping for better.
I decided mentally I would even buy it with the crappy (compared to 36, 42, 61mp) 24mp sensor. But not with that EVF. That's my line in the sand. It's too bad. I really like the form factor.

If this toy with these specs is priced for more than $1500, size be damned, a good used A7RIII goes for $1800, and used A7RIV goes for $2500....The A7C is compact but is it really that much smaller than the A7III, except the hump? I am sure some will like it, I am happy Sony makes it for the folks who value the reduction in size and weight.

Perhaps Sony thought it wouldn't be wise to offer a higher res. EVF because they still want to sell the A7 III.

Fascinating how mentioning the A7R, with all our memories of quirks and glory, can derail a thread more than a drunken sailor in the Island of the Caribbean... lol
On topic:
I like the concept of the A7C.
For the price to work, this needs to be a stripped down A7IV, not a pimped A7III, though.
Assuming the A7IV will be like the A7SIII but with only 4k60, 1080p120, 5MP EVF. It should have the new UI, new touch, new tracking, new processor, new codecs and 10bit, but no external RAW or fancy codec variants like All-I.
With these specs the A7IV might still be a hot seller at 300 bucks more than the A7III was?
Based on this imaginary A7IV, the A7C could then be a cripple hammer haunted derivate with 2-3MP EVF, less buttons and a throttled processor with lesser fps and slower readout, more jello.
Same price or 100 less, a tradeoff portability vs last-mile-awesome-sauce.
A could see this work.
When the A7C is a upgraded A7III, though, a couple of month before the A7IV hits? Bad move IMO. You only have one shot at introducing a new concept like this. Don‘t hurry....Show more →
So it is not even really a pimped A7III. But more a A7III with flippy and no record limit.
Perfectly fine. Then it is a 1299 camera for me, though.
P.S. Do we know whether it at least got the A7R IV autofocus upgrades like Eye-AF in movie and tracking AF?
P.P.S. Please Sony, don‘t market this as a vlogger camera with a new lens that is only 28mm at the wide end. The lens boggles me even more than the camera. I can see merrit in a lens like this, if it was 2.8-4.0 and of high quality like the 2.8/35 back then.

Maybe? But I am assuming the A7iii is getting a price reduction anyway once the a7iv comes out. I still think they are hurting themselves here. Unless they are planning a higher res sensor/evf option later. But if that was the case they should just announce it tomorrow to calm the backlash. To me this looks like Sony isn't even sure who their target markets are.

I wouldn't go as far as calling it a toy, but I agree with your argument here, Douglas. If Sony charges close to A7iii money for this camera, you really have to hate the hump and/or put a premium on compactness to justify the cash. The specs all scream entry level FF, so it should be priced accordingly.
At this point, I'm more interested in the compact lenses Sony plans to release together with this cam (other than the kit zoom).

We all have our limitations
My main camera is an a7r2, so this is improved. I liked the a7r3 and a9 that I owned EVF’s far better, But I see this as a start to a new line, I’m sure a higher model will come out and be better. When that happens, I’ll trade up.

Agree. For those who are unhappy with the A7C specs, it's likely a high end model will be available in the future.
Size/weight reduction + full frame are enough reasons for many to think this is an awesome camera. If you don't find value on that, this camera may not be for you. Personally I will wait for a high end model as I'm very happy with my A7R IV.

Problem is you can't "unsee" something. I bought an a7iii as a second body but could not deal with the EVF and returned it. Not because it is bad. It's just like 61mp. Once you go there it's more noticeable going backward. If I never moved up to 42mp and 61mp. 24 would be great. Same with 2.3 EVF would be fine probably if I never saw 3.6 and 5.7. That's why I'm never looking through and A7siii EVF

Yeah, my kit of 3 primes is tiny. With a higher end a7cR or whatever, I’d hope we get a couple more custom button too, or another wheel in front by the shutter.
I think the one thing that people are missing is this has the a7siii AF module (I think), and that’s quite welcome to me, and better than the a7iii.

I feel the same—but with bigger bodies and lenses. I simply can’t stand they keep getting bigger. So this a7c is for me

Specs are good enough for how I would use a compact camera. a7rIV and a7rIII will do the heavy lifting as needed, but I can see the a7c handling a lot of my personal photography just fine and the size/weight are of tremendous value here.
Just need to see where the price lands. If its closer to $2k, I'll hold off on buying right away...particularly since COVID is putting a lot shooting outside of the house on hold.

Backlash is coming from high end users...this is not a high end camera. We have plenty of them. This is aimed at the vlogger which does not require the high end viewfinders or sensors. That end of the market, the cameras actual target, is probably rejoicing...not back lashing.

My only Sony body is the a7III, and I love it. I have no interest in a 42 or 61MP body. I just wish Sony
would give a general idea as to when the a7iv is coming.

For what this camera is purportedly aimed at, I think that EVF is fine. For most of us, yeah, we want more.
If this camera had the A7s3 EVF in it, I mean I'd just like buy it instantly. But I am sure there's packaging constraints at the very least involved with that.

The EVF resolution is the same as the a7iii, but the smaller magnification means the apparent dpi will be higher. It might not actually give you more visual data but it’ll appear sharper
