The EVF resolution is the same as the a7iii, but the smaller magnification means the apparent dpi will be higher. It might not actually give you more visual data but it’ll appear sharper
Exactly right. I do prefer high mag over res though because I primarily shoot MF with shimmering pixels to focus.

If it's 2 grand Sony has been in the back shed smoking something. I like the idea of it but custom functions is killing me. I don't not enough about that Sigma but if I was looking for really small looks like a viable option. But I know little about it . Looks cool

Backlash is coming from high end users...this is not a high end camera. We have plenty of them. This is aimed at the vlogger which does not require the high end viewfinders or sensors. That end of the market, the cameras actual target, is probably rejoicing...not back lashing.
Uh? I see plenty of backlash about the video spec. Not sure what your talking about.

Alrighty, then! Have we gotten confirmation on price? Anyone want to play?
I'm going with $1100. Specs being what they are, I think there's going to be significant backlash until/unless the high-end version comes along. They could surprise me and offer it for $900, though. Not ruling out that they'd want to intentionally segment the a7's and designate this their into/affordable backup camera lest they risk diluting the Sony family name.

From vloggers or from people comparing it to the A7s3?
I have never in my life met a "vlogger" Chez so how would I know if anyone on Sar is a vlogger. Just read the comments. The point was simply if Sony plans to release a higher spec version (since this is an entry level in a new line) Then they might want to let it be known tomorrow a more expensive version is coming down the pipe that's all. I would expect if the "higher end" version comes with a better res sensor and EVF it would probably have better video specs as well. I personally don't care about the video side. But it would seem to make sense video options would get a bump as well in a more expensive version of the A7c.

$2000...but that isn't confirmed by an official source yet. However the leakers seem pretty confident that it is right around that price point.
SAR says they have confirmed that the Euro price is 2099 for body only.

I know nothing about marketing, but my gut says Sony will sell quite a few of these at $2000 — and 10 times more than that at $1,400.
Seems quite a few here know a whole bunch about marketing. I think Sony knows how they want to market and price this product to maximize their profits overall...including all their other cameras they have.
We are all looking at this from our personal needs and wants...Sony looks at things from an entire family of products.
I bet they'd sell 100 times more if it was priced at $500.

I would say it'll be in the $1800 range, but as is this will certainly be discounted in few months, like the a6600
they doesn't seem to be trying to compete in this generation

I had the same question as you. I am impressed. And I’ll be ordering one.
Thank Nehemiah,
Yes, I think there is a good chance I will be ordering one too. That size does set it apart especially for a travel camera. I will wait until it is actually out and people have put it through its paces, but it does seem like a nice option to me.

As someone who has wished for a camera like this for years, I find myself in the strange position of seeing almost exactly what I wished for and wondering if it's something I still want. If they had introduced this body at the same time they introduced the a7rII, I would've been an instant adopter for both. A high-res body for detailed macros, stage, and cityscapes, and a small, lower-res body that would be a perfect fit on the Cambo Actus with my Hassy V and older Rodenstock lenses that's also a very capable travel camera.
Flash forward a few years and I've changed the Actus to an Actus DB before I sold the entire set-up. I don't travel for business anymore, so, when I travel, it's specifically for photography, and my kits are planned around that. I've very comfortable with the features and sizes of my monochrome rII and color rIII, so much so that the lack of the grip control dial makes me think I'm just too fussy to give it up for any size savings. I'd like to think that I'm still flexible enough to deal with the changes, but my aging mind isn't so certain.
I'm trying to keep an open mind, and will certainly rent one to check it out. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, or maybe it's a camera that's coming a few years too late for me.

This looks like such a great travel camera, and I would be a LOT more tempted to order this if I was traveling/flying like any other year. But if there's a chance of a higher-res version coming out next year that would be a lot more enticing. For now I'm happy to wait it out with my current A7rII, which I feel still holds some advantages over this.

Big, big disappointment. I mean how much money does that really save to make the camera much more usable.
I think for this camera, the two numbers that Fred quoted are related 2.4 M dots and 424g. The lower res EVF let's them keep the camera smaller and lighter. This camera is meant to be small and light, and a higher res sensor would make it less so. Don't worry, I think you will be quite happy when the A7 IV comes out in the next six months to a year, then Sony will have a nice set of cameras with price points that I think will make pretty decent sense--the A7 III for about $1,500, this A7c with similar capabilities but smaller for $2,000, and a much more capable A7 IV for $2,500 or so. I think many here who don't like the A7c, might love the A7 IV, which will very likely have a better EVF, will very likely have the A7s III processor and menus, and may even have a 42MP sensor. If that camera is what I expect, then I think very few people will be disappointed with it.
In the mean time, those of us who want a small camera can be happy with this one. This small camera becomes the base model, and the A7 IV becomes a mid level model between the base model and the high level models that are more specialized (high res, action oriented, and video oriented) and that mid level model makes it very hard for something like the Canon R5 or the Nikon Z7s to get much traction because it competes well with them at a substantially lower price.

I don't really get what makes this more of a travel camera than any of the others.

It’s a good bit lighter and smaller, also less expensive. Some folks not comfortable traveling with really expensive gear. Lack of hump + smaller lens = less attention.

feels like they had this model stuck in development, the only work they had was to make the rec button, and everything else seems so backwards that it's likely that they had more work and spend more money trying to take out stuff from this camera than just chopping the top of the a7III

I recall a lot of threads on the lines of "I don't want to carry, or, I can't carry my ff dslr anymore. What's a good, light substitute?" Of course different travelers have different interests but this gives back the advantages of a 24 mp ff sensor when it comes to dynamic range, "noise" and the ability to eek out that narrow depth of field from a fast prime in a body essentially the size of the typical aps-c mirror-less. I noticed a big difference going from a Nikon D7200 to the NEX-6. This does that and more. One would have to be selective in lenses and all, but still, the alternatives before for small and handy and ff were pretty limited. OTOH, if one's stroll around kit was two bodies and a 3 or 4 f2.8 zooms and a prime or two, then this might not be as enticing.

For me it is the smaller size and lighter weight. That is it.
