I've shot 3200 images over the past 2 days covering a race with the new firmware. The camera has not locked up once or locked me out of any record modes after shooting photos for hours on end. I believe this had been fixed.. But there's a new problem! The IBIS system regularly goes bonkers on my 100-400 now before settling down. It doesn't do it every time, but it's a lot...maybe 30-40% of the time when someone out to 400mm and make any sudden movement - like bringing the camera up to your eye quickly to grab a shot.

Does the new firmware rectify the lockups?

Arbitrage had that happen today using my R5 with the 100-400...
Yep, Pius' R5 on the new FW locked on me today and I only had the camera for a couple hours if that. As Pius mentions this was with the 100-400II and 1.4TCIII (I think it was when I had the 1.4 on but could have been the 2x). The image froze in the EVF mid-burst. It was just displaying a frame with the red AF point indicator which means it was displaying a Playback image as we had the camera set to show the focus point on Playback. I turned Off the camera and the image was still there. I was about to pull the battery but first passed the camera to Pius for him to look. He had turned it back on and then pumped the AF button and it was back alive without a battery pull.
I also had some very disconcerting loud IS clunks from the 400DOII....they seemed to happen as I raised the camera to my eye to get on a BIF and started to engage AF-ON, the image went way OOF and then everything was back to normal.
Canon has a lot more FW to work on with this camera.

That clunk me might be because the IS was running.

Yes it certainly is a direct result of having constantly running IS as when it happened I was very quickly bringing the camera up from my side and I think the IS system just gets out of whack and tried to compensate but it is not a good sound and I can’t imagine is good for long term durability of the IS system. I’ve had two IS systems replaced in my Canon lenses over the years even without this type of behaviour.

You aren't the first to have mentioned this. Only way around it is pressing the playback or menu buttons to stop it. Waiting for 45 seconds for it to time out is not practical.

I was told, it has nothing to do with running the IS.
Can believe this, because I had 2x lock up with RF70-200 and 3x with 300/2.8II.
It has all to do with the temperature inside the body. [also the problem overheating with filming]
It happend to me on 2 very warm day's [ +33 degree] outside.
All the shoots in low temperature, I didn't have a lock up, so far.

Just to be clear the IS clunk and the lockup were totally unrelated. I had a single lockup. I had 3 or 4 IS clunks.
Oh, I didn't understand it very well I think,
But what do you mean with: IS Clunk?
never mention a behavior like that?
thnxx
The IS unit in the lens made what I assume to be a large movement or reset and made a loud clunk noise as I brought the camera to my eye. I think that the clunk happened only on the 400DOII. The lockup was with the 100-400II/TC.

I have had that happen several times with the 600 III couple of times with BIF's and once when the bird was perched "pygmy owl" I was shooting the pygmy in silent shutter.... The pygmy owl looked directly at the camera as to say keep it quite i'm hunting... If that was a bird sensitive to noise... gone....
I have been using the R5 for about 2 weeks. About 1500 photos. Lenses used, all Ef with converter. (600 f4 series 2 with and without 1.4x , 100-400 series 2 with and without 1.4x, 24-70 f4, 15-35 f4. 70-200 f4). No lockout or problems. Very, very satisfied. Camera in Eco mode Is switches off after 10 seconds.

Thank you for explaining this to me.
I work with 300/2.8II and 400/2.8III [with TC] but I didn't notice this behavior
Same here with the freezes/lock-ups - even after the firmware update. This was with 400III+2x, with the 400III also having had its firmware updated to the latest. Screen and EVF go black for what feels like 10-15 seconds, and then it seems to resolve itself. That makes it no less annoying when it happens though - in my case, right in the middle of a BIF sequence when the birds where at the optimum position.
Canon - fix this ASAP - this is not acceptable on a 4K premium body. I have to say though, that once or twice (over a 6 month ownership period), I've had the 1DX3 also lock up, requiring me to remove the battery and reinsert it. But with the R5 this seems to happen several times a day, not a few times a year.

The camera is probably not even warmed up, taking 1500 photos over a 2 week period. Flipped it to ES and hold that shutter button down, Ben!...

Finger trouble, 2500, one has to work sometimes!😉 Lock down does not make it easier.
