Your experiences here match my feelings about the 400DOII exactly. If Canon comes with an APS-C version of the R5 in future, I will likely add Canon to the Nikon D500+500PF, but it will not be with the 400DOII again. I will go for the 500/4, so I won't need the 2.0TC for reach. On the 7DII, the 400DOII+2.0TC still looked very good for closer distances, but going out a bit further it crumbled.

That's been my experience with every lens, closer you are the better the detail regardless 400 DO II or whatever. As for the R5 it has a 1.6 crop mode. Especially with TC's shooting over a long distance...
Of course, but if I were to shoot Canon again, I simply would not see the 400DOII as a good way to get beyond 560mm (1.4TC), because it needs the 2.0TC for that. It's no fault of the 400DOII as such (other than it being 400mm), it is a very high end lens, but I see a 500mm f4+1.4TC as a much better option to shoot at larger distance and still have good IQ. I would ultimately prefer a 600mm lens on a 45mp FF sensor though (or a 22mp crop sensor), which is why my hope is on Nikon for producing a Z600mm f5.6PF
A late visitor to my place last evening. He stuck around for about 3-5 seconds just enough time for me to make a capture. BC has a lot more "bounty" than the American Midwest with respect to bird species.
