Great dragonfly image!

I already did. I used just the strait lens no extenders yet in crop mode with AEF. My verdict is WOW No issues at all with AF speed or FPS in MS or ES.

Rob....can you please, pretty please test the 400DOII and just make sure that the chart in the manual is incorrect and that it doesn't drop the FPS in Mechanical. Thanks and happy shooting....nothing like a new toy to re-shoot all our same yard birds

Great News the DO does not drop in fps. It is outstanding actually. I used it in both ES and MS with AEF in crop mode. Not flight yet.

Thank you very much!

Did you order the new RF 100-500mm tele zoom?

I did but I will see how the 100-400 does and if to my liking I may cancel that. I am not sure what will be gained other than not using an adapter. Could be a great travel lens once we can again.

The difference in weight and zoom range?

Rob, come on man, I was counting on you to tell me the camera and especially that combo was a dog. Are you trying to cost me $10K CAD??

Okay no BIF yet but DIF 200-400 + 1.4x engaged in crop mode. What is interesting here is I was in ES and there was no distortion in any of the shots.

Those wings are certainly distorted. That is not just motion blur.

The obvious being the the extra 100 mil. That will be a nice travel lens. I still think the extra 3 pins will improve the systems overall performance. I have no camera or lens to prove it and I'm sure I'll be able to but I decided I'm going all new tech. I should get the R5 before I get the lens so I'll have a few weeks of playing around. Then I'lll see if I notice a difference. I also ordered the RF 1.4.

Just for experimentation I spent about 1/2 hour today using the A7RIV in ES for BIF. I'm just downloading the shots now. From some quick chimping I did in the field it seemed that gulls and herons didn't show much if any distortion. But the Belted Kingfisher certainly did. However, the RIV is almost certainly scanning slower than the R5. So you may be able to use the R5 for everything other than hummingbirds. Even with hummers if you catch the pose with wings fully back or fully forward (which are usually the best poses anyways) I noticed even with the RIV there wasn't much shot ruining distortion.

Distortion or not, that dragonfly image is exceptional. Most would not notice it. It may even look better with a bit of distortion!

The big question is did you use animal eye focus for the DIF?

HA HA, yes I did and it worked. Granted I have only done perched stuff but I am amazed how well it finds the eye. It had trouble on a butterfly but that is about it so far.

Don't see any RF 600 or RF 800 images. Guess most FM users passed on it. More curious about the RF TCs.

Check out this guy's setup with EF 100mm macro, 12mm extension tube, EF 2x TC, and variND EF/RF adaptor.

Rob, in another thread someone stated their R5 and 200-400 combo had sluggish focus. It's never been as snappy focusing as a super tele prime, but would appreciate your subject tracking experiences with this combo.

Not a lot of play time yet and the heat is keeping most critters grounded, but I got a chance to click on this little guy earlier.

This animal eye tracking is insane. It picks up on insect eyes as well. I see what those early reviewers were talking about now when they said it would find and lock onto their subjects before they could find them in the VF. This has happened to me a lot. It's a little scary.

Nice clean shot. Are tulip trees native to your area, or is this eagle perching in a park somewhere?

From those bird photos, I'm guessing you are pleased with your investment. I was noticing all the detail in the "hairs" or feathers to the right of the bird's head in the first shot.

I took over 1200 shots today, mostly outdoor of kids at a summer camp. Focus was spot on, better viewfinder and less lag than the R.

In other words, close to 600 photos per one battery?

An exciting tree rat. Heavy crop @ ISO12800

R5 + 100-400II + crop mode

Have I mentioned how much I like this in camera crop mode? Man is that sweet! And my PC thanks me for it too!
