Has anyone seen an A9/A9ii comparison yet? I'd love to see how the AF truly stacks up. The R5's animal eye-AF seems better implemented but the specs point to the A9 being the better camera for tracking (partially for the better electronic shutter performance and lack of rolling shutter distortion)

There have been a few reviews or comparisons from Youtube. One may be in this thread, or maybe another related thread. One shot birds, who I recall owned a A9 ii ... he seemed to lean to the R5

A few comments from KINGOFKINGS here but nothing too in depth: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1657075/9#15312689

This seems like a really on-point review:

Just watched that one (and made a separate post about it). Great review.

Me too. Start at 16:10. At 16:28 he says he was struggling to track it which is exactly what KINGOFKINGS said here.

Did you notice how well it ignored other subjects when the main one was obstructed. That is like TS set to -2. I bet he was using Case 1 and Tracking Switched Subjects was probably on the factory setting of 1. I think it is 1 because the manual shows it. I don't have the R5 yet to verify it.

Why is Fro holding off putting head to head with a9.
I want to see Sony native glass vs Canon adapted glass.
The 400 2.8 III vs Sony 400 2.8.

Maybe it's because they are so close he needs to repeat or run some more tests.

Good video.

29:45 A minor nitpick just in case new users get the wrong idea. TS at -2 does not hang around a lot longer. I tested it. You get about 1 to 2 seconds but in the field that is a lot of time when shooting BIF. I’ve been at TS-2 since 2009.

31:00 Switching Tracked Subjects. This is new and Canon’s and the translation in the manual is not that great. That is what I figured. Disable to maintain eye focus on the primary subject.

Now my question about the relationship between the two? I guess it is a double whammy with TS-2 and STS set to Disable or not? There have been several birding and football videos with pretty amazing examples of the AF point glued to the eye and ignoring obstructions.

Where they at factory settings of Case 1 with no TS adjustment. STS to 1 which I assume is the factory setting? The manual shows 1 and he said he set it to 0.

If those video examples were at factory settings that was pretty amazing for full zone eye AF. If you set STS to 0 it will be even more stubborn at holding the AF point is on the primary subjects eye.

I brought this up before. Do you really need TS-2 when you have STS set to 0 and you are in full zone? It won’t hurt it but maybe TS or the other Cases are now more suited for single point AF? This Zone AF is a whole new beast. They even removed AF Switching from the Case parameters which I think made it more user friendly. I find this very interesting and what I’m going to test if I get the R5. Where is Rudy Winston when you need him?

Also I should point out STS is just not the for eye AF. From the manual. Face+Tracking, Zone AF, or Large Zone AF (vertical or horizontal) AF methods

I should point out they removed 1st and 2nd Priority options from AI Servo which helps make it more user friendly as well. One less thing to worry about.
