Thank you. The needs differ, for sure. The sweet spot for me was the 36MP the D810 offered. However, I read the rumor, that a future firmware update would allow the A7riv to shoot in an s-raw mode giving you smaller MP files. This is something I would like to have for higher MP cameras to adjust to shooting needs flexibly.
The stacked sensor in the A9 is said to be very expensive and difficult to manufacture. It comes with a read noise penalty at lower isos, too. Nevertheless, I wouldn't mind a 36MP A9iii to be honest, if possible not

I think the Sony A7iV will be around 32-36MP, updated AF, processor, good enough video specs, etc. It will never be a Sony R-series or A9-series, but I think it will replace the A7R3 and A73 if anything.

It may be "closed", but there will be more 3rd party options. Lenses for the Canon RF mount currently include lenses made by Rokinon, Mitakon, Meike, Yasuhara, Kipon, Venus Optics and Lensbaby. Granted, the 3rd party lens selection is small and the lenses aren't the ones people want most. What's missing? Sigma, Tamron, Zeiss, Voigtlander, Viltrox and Tokina come to mind. There are reports that Sigma will announce their RF lens roadmap soon. Tamron may be the holdout, as Sony owns a significant share of Tamron and may be able to keep Tamron out of the RF mount indefinitely. Not having access to Tamron's newer lenses would be a significant disadvantage for some Canon users.

In other words, the higher quality companies. Reverse engineered mounts are unlikely to be the same quality as open mount lenses.

Matt Granger makes a few good points.

As a photographer mainly, not video shooter, I do wish there was a R5.5 in the middle of the R5 and R6. 36-40mp, no 8K video, new/better battery, slightly better price. I personally think 8K should be put in specialized systems, not for the "masses" - in a general purpose camera.

Exactly, a Tamron AF lens for Sony FE can use proper mount specifications from Sony and work properly. With the Canon RF and Nikon Z mounts the reverse engineering can’t guarantee anything, and a new firmware on the camera or a new camera generation can break compatibility. Canon and Nikon still operate like computer companies in the 1980ies at the peril of their users.

Even Fujifilm has now opened the APS-C Fujifilm X-mount.

So true. My adult children buy every new Iphone immediately after launch.

Makes me sick at my stomach. Wifey tells me it's their life - not mine. But I still don't see the need to stand in line for hours just to get an overpriced gizmo.

These new Canon's are just images of sirens.

The things keeping me from buying it, selling all my Sony gear, and switching to Canon RF:

1) Battery Life. Nothing like doing an 18-hour walkaround day on 60% of a single battery.

2) They don't have a 24/1.4 on RF mount yet. 3 zooms, light 85, 24/1.4 is every lens I've used in the last 6 months.

3) It's $1000 more expensive than the RIII I already own (though I do find ~45MP a sweet spot) for a bunch of video features I don't use, and if Sony brings out a R4.5 that's an RIV with an RIII sensor, I'll buy it immediately.

Unfortunately for Sony, that's the entire list at this point.

Sorry my bad, I meant that I had ro shell out 20k for the equivalent Canon RF system. Its hard to predict current used prices of my Sony gear in this abnormal situation we’re in.

There was speculation that the Canon RF and Nikon Z mount protocols would be encrypted. Was that ever determined? I suppose a third party workaround would be to use existing reverse engineered Canon EF protocols if the earlier assumption that the EF-RF adapter is a simple pass through connection is correct. But that of course wouldn't take full advantage of the RF mount's full capabilities, speculated to be faster AF communication, IBIS and OIS working together, and perhaps more. But it would be a quick way for third parties to offer RF mount lenses.

The lack of third party lenses from the main players is likely as much them waiting for Canon to finally, fully commit to mirrorless. And now they have. Apparently a reason Sigma, for example, was slow to release FE designs, was that DSLR mounts continued to represent a significantly larger market segment, and therefore sales potential, until recently.

I saw where they got around 1000 shots on a battery. That seems pretty good.

I am already seeing the canon r5 toaster pictures

Zero interest in video. 8k is such a marketing gimmick and that heat management in 90 degree weather is going to be interesting and having a pretty fast computer to work with larger files. As said 8k really should be in specialized cameras that have proper heat management, not in this R5 really...

But, glad there are more choices and this should give sony a push. That canon ad though was super cringe. They were trying to market an energy drink or something? Game on energy drink? I know one thing for sure about canon RF system now; it's HELLA expensive! Those RF lenses each being like $3k is no joke. Not a fan of using adapters either for their EF lenses. More stuff to carry. So glad I am with sony and sticking to it. Noway I'll switch.

I like the line of logic you followed

Deciding by eleminating

8k is not practical
Rf lenses are expensive
Adaptors are not preferable

Well, I understand your feelings, but there are many points here to discuss:

Yes our consuming society is made on affects, on built needs, and most of the time no one needs something new. Plus it looks like this production mode is harmful for our environment. I am personnaly in a logic of "buying less living more"... But...

ITOH there are places in technology where there is still a potential gain of performance or ease of use.

I don't see it in smartphone now, as I use it as a phone only... So I still have an "old SE"

The most noticeable add I have seen in laptop is lightweight and battery life, and don't see any needs to have a new laptop now.

It is because I have reached the point where I don't need something more.

I feel, and I am not the only one, that most of us are about to reach the point in digital cameras: what do we still need?

Compared to the A73:
a bit more MP
a better evf

What else?

The cameras we have now are just incredibles, and because there are not so many things to make them better, it can be hard for canon sony and others, to think about a camera that will stay for a long time!

I feel it is excitting: will there be the ultimate camera everyone expects?

That is the question for me, that is what amuses me!

Their brand new teleconverters aren't going to work with the relatively new 70-200/2.8L? Does that seem like a giant miss to anyone else?

You are buying a better camera thoug, and it's new.

I've run the numbers and the changeover is ~$5-7K, which is OK given I'm selling used and buying new.

I also am able to depreciate the new gear, the old stuff is almost all depreciated already, so a bonus for the business.

That's a draw card that makes our business much more than the outlay for the gear.
