I think it focuses closer manually.

Clearly, it looks much better than the Tamron with its close focus feature.

In the videos they compare against the 24GM. Sharpness is similar to the 24GM in the central region and a tiny bit behind in the corners (but we don't know about field curvature so far).

Just sold my Loxia today and will have to decide between Tamron 17-28, Sigma 14-24 (likely not, don't want a big filter system) or the 16-35GM. This lens looks nice, too.

My favorite 20-21mm landscape lens is still the Loxia 21/2.8 and it will be interesting to compare it to the new Sony 20/1.8G.

Love my Nikon 20mm f/1.8G. This is an exceptional focal length and aperture for environmental portraits. It doesn't seem like it would be all that different than 24mm but it's a world of difference.

I agree that 20mm gives you a total different look than 24mm.

I am reiterating. I could use the 20/1.8G on the dance floor with AF when it is crowded or for smaller wedding venues. And I could use it for landscape work and stack if I need something wider. I like the sunstars in Albert Dros' images, too.
The Loxia is fantastic but mounting/unmounting it is a pain due to the small size and aperture ring, furthermore it is MF, which isn't that useful at weddings.

Have been going back and forth on whether or not to get the 24 GM to pair with the 85 f1.8. Looking to replace my 28-75 with just primes.

Looks like a great addition to the lineup but a letdown for me.

1. I was hoping it was going to be smaller if it was not a 1.4. Without looking up the exact dimensions, it looks very similar in size to the GM 24 which I already have.
2. Price point not compelling enough for me to get one for grins to play with or just have in the bag.
3. I have had the Sigma 20/1.4 since the A7R2 and continue to love what it does.

I would have picked up the FE 20/1.8 had it been smaller than the GM 24 as that would be the biggest advantage for me. But if it is going to be the same size, I'd be much more happy just sticking with the two lenses I have in that range.

If it were at a lower price point, I would have at least played with one for a while.

For my particular case, it is the unhappy median of all things that matter to me.

I will say though, that it does appear to be a rock solid lens that will be a super compelling part of the lineup for anyone that doesn't already have other stuff they prefer in that range.

I'd love a ultra wide to replace my 12-24, but I don't think this is it. I'd ideally want to be around 16mm. Looks nice enough though and priced a good deal lower than the GM--of course it's slower. Speaking of GMs, I guess the GM goodies (aperture ring, and fn button) are no longer going to be reserved for that line.

Honestly what this shows is how much Sony has neglected its wide and ultrawide range in its own lenses. We should have 16, 18, 20, 24, 28. I call 2 of 5 lagging.

There are differences in the number of blades and focus motors as well:

24/1.4 GM:
11-blade aperture
AF: Redesigned high-power DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focus drive system contributes to reduced size and weight while delivering approximately three times greater thrust than the previous system.

20/1.8 G:
9-blade aperture
AF: Two XD (eXtreme Dynamic) Linear Motors easily keep up with the high-speed capabilities of today’s most advanced camera bodies

This looks really good to me. I would not be interested in an f/1.4 version.

If the MF experience is good it will impact the Loxia for landscape work.

Manual focus has a linear focus response so it looks like it will be great just like with the 24/1.4 GM:

Looks like a nice addition to the lineup. I too am interested to compare to the Loxia, which is close enough in price point and cheaper used - but I'm selling my Loxia anyway since the 16-35 GM covers my rare needs in this FL, and the Batis 18 fills in the "lightish lens for astro" gap.
(Of course, this lens could drop the Loxia used price even further and then what the heck might as well keep it )

For someone who does a lot of landscape and astro, this could be an ideal travel/landscape/astro/camping lens.

Like I've told lots of folks on here, if you're in the US and you want the 35/1.8, buying from Henry's in Canada is your best bet, you'll save a chunk.

Sorry for wandering off topic a bit - but those in the US may not be able to order from Henry's anymore for the savings. I placed an order a few weeks ago for a Sony lens and it was later cancelled with the following note:

"Thank you for your online order placed with Henry's for the Sony XXX Lens. This is an update to let you know that due to trade agreements with Sony Canada, we are unable to ship the new Sony products to the United States. Our distribution centre has cancelled the shipment of your order and will be issuing a full refund to your account.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Our web team is currently working on a process to prevent US based customers from adding new Sony products to their shopping cart so as to avoid this issue from recurring."

I realize some will feel different, but for me it's too close to the 24 GM. I'd want a gap wider than that. If it was an 18 maybe, just don't think I have a current need.

That 4mm matters a lot. Part of the reason I didn't get the 24 is that I already had 24-105. True, it's not as fast but I couldn't justify another 24.

I've been in positions on shoots where a 24 isn't wide enough. 20 would have been. I also think the pricepoint on the 20 is good.

The real challenge is probably the Sigma 20 1.4. The Sony is going to have to be a show-stopper performance. But Sony has just done really well quality wise, so I'm betting it will be a winner.
