Has anyone's plans changed for gear purchases this year based on the virus? Or, do people still have a hole being burnt in their pockets?
I’ve been told in no uncertain terms that I won’t be buying this camera until the economy stabilizes, no matter how much extra I work in a critical role fighting the pandemic. Probably for the better, it’ll help me sequester more money away to replace all my glass in one fell swoop when I hawk it off some early adopters for a few hundred off.
Still looking forward to the camera and hope they release more info (ship date) today at the online event. It’s exciting to finally see canon building an interesting camera again. My 5D3 is still chugging away but it’s time for an upgrade.

I'd be interested in a link to where Canon specifically claimed it to be a "Sports" Camera.
I read the entire Techradar interview and didn't note that claim?
Did read this quote, though.
"But let's not forget there are a lot of enthusiasts out there who love products at this level," he added. "It's not targeted towards any particular genre of photography, in the same way that the 5 series evolved into that all-rounder type of camera. With the 5-series you see it in every single kind of photography situation you can imagine," he added."
Just going off what their claims are from the press release. I've copied the relevant portion below.
From their press release;
Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras in the company’s EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor that makes possible such advanced features as high-speed continuous shooting—up to approximately 20 frames per second (FPS) using an electronic shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS using a mechanical shutter—to facilitate shooting of athletes at sporting events and other fast-moving subjects.
Newly Announced Details of The Canon EOS R5 Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera include:
8K RAW internal video recording up to 29.97 fps
8K internal video recording up to 29.97 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265).
4K internal video recording up to 119.88 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). 4K external recording is also available up to 59.94 fps.
No crop 8K and 4K video capture using the full-width of the sensor.*
Dual Pixel CMOS AF available in all 8K and 4K recording modes.
Canon Log available in 8K and 4K internal recording modes.
A Canon first, the EOS R5 will feature 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilization, which works in conjunction with Optical IS equipped with many of the RF and EF lenses.
Dual-card slots: 1x CFexpress and 1x SD UHS-II.
Looks like a winner. Stills grabs from 8k in addition to that noted above by WarrenL. Should end up being a great camera... if they ever actually decide to offer it for sale.
I figure if they are gonna "hook" folks into the R system (read, buy R mount glass), they have to have a body good enough to set the bait. EF's for now ... R's tomorrow.

I didn't expect the R5 IBIS to work in conjunction with EF IS len's--That's a definite + for me!
I watched the portion of that video 3 times and they don't state that the optical stabilization of EF lenses will work with IBIS, just that OIS will work in conjunction with IBIS. We don't know if this is only RF lenses or all EF and RF. Still don't give a price point photo specs, or release date, just a stay tuned for more info later.
Astonishing Autofocus and Subject Detection
The EOS R5 brings subject detection to a new level – Utilizing Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF Technology, the EOS R5 will be capable of making Ultra-High-Speed Autofocus calculations to match its immensely powerful High-Speed Shooting capability of 20 fps. Subject detection adopted from the Live View AF tracking system in the EOS-1D X Mark III brings Face, Head and even Eye tracking when People detection is set, providing ease and accuracy when capturing stills or video. Detection of Animals will also be possible for the first time in a Canon camera, effectively tracking the whole body, face, or eye of cats, dogs, or birds for speed and precision.
“Additionally, the EOS R5’s IBIS will work in combination with Optical Image Stabilization found in many Canon RF and EF lenses.”

The R5 is a spec monster to be sure. I would be very surprised if the R5 sells for less that $4500. At least when it ships. Maybe price reductions 6-9 mos after release.
Sure the R5 is a "5D class" camera but with these superior specs over the Sony, and Nikon without even a rumor of a rumor of a similar camera (and D6 video=D5=4k30p) Canon has very little competition. Add the very large pro and advanced amateur user base who will be looking at the R5 and it's game over.
The marketplace is different now because of the pandemic. Production will be limited for quite some time. If you can only produce 50% of your normal production, you make up for that with higher price. At least initially.
A huge "however" comes to mind..... If Canon does, however, sell the R5 for $3300 to $3500 it could be such a huge success it could be camera market changing. Sony would have to do some serious price reductions and Nikon might just abandon "high end" video outright.
Someone had to do it, thank you Canon..... now for the lenses, if I can get the same ones I have for sony, I'm jumping ship, but if sony makes a comparable body..............
