I can relate to that ... sadly! I may have to get rid of all my m43 gear to get the R5 plus a couple of lenses ... possibly the 24-105 STM and 100-500L.

Has anyone's plans changed for gear purchases this year based on the virus? Or, do people still have a hole being burnt in their pockets?

Maybe Canon will hire Trump to do one of their ads:

"This is the best Canon, the most wonderful Canon, the most awesome Canon ever made. I don't think that another camera has even been made in the history of the world that is this good. And by the way, you need to try those Trump steaks which are so good and I think that might be bundled with this Canon. In fact, I think Canon is already bundling and if they're not then they should. Yes, they should. And by the way, you should be thankful that I was so on the ball with this whole virus thing otherwise you wouldn't even have a nation in which to be shooting this great Canon camera. You need to be grateful."

They just closed the state parks in New Jersey and I fear other places will follow, so I’d be limited to the eyes of the birds in my backyard. Great GAS treatment.

Redwood National Park was closed over a week ago.

Enjoy a shot from just a few days ago. There be back doors to hidden adventures.

I certainly want to test the R5 and some of the RF lenses, but there's no point in getting any equipment if I'm stuck in the states until Q3 or Q4.

I was a Canon shooter with a 6D and 5D Mark IV. I switched to Sony but do miss those Canon colours. I would consider switching back to Canon but I want to see what this cameras dynamic range is like. Sony’s is absolutely killer, looking forward to/craving more info on the sensor!

It would take an extreme personal crisis and/or a $5,000+ price tag to get me off the R5 at this point, but I have admittedly become a bit of a hype zombie. It'll be my first proper mirrorless camera, and I've been slowly accumulating RF glass, and I'm just very excited in general, even though it's just gear, etc etc.

Well with the stimulus checks being paid out, what was no chance for me to get an R5 now has me sitting on enough cash to get the R5 once released, as long as it isn't 1DxIII priced. I'm still working and considered essential and with gas prices as low as they are, I'm spending what I did in 1993 for gas.

My biggest concern is that while Canon claims it will be a sports camera, will the AF be at least as good as a 1Dx or 1DxII?

I think Canon has realized that they really need a "winner" with this one.

Weather the AF matches the capability of the 1D-X series is questionable, but it should at least match, & hopefully surpass that of it's primary ML competitors, the Nikon Z-7, & Sony A7R-4.

Well Canon has said publicly that it is a sports camera so it better be better than the A7IV. I may not expect it to be on par with a $6500 camera, but I think it should at least rival a 4-8 year old 1D series.

The AF should be as good as or better than the Sony A9 or A9 II which costs $4,000 and $4,500 respectively.

I'd be interested in a link to where Canon specifically claimed it to be a "Sports" Camera.

I read the entire Techradar interview and didn't note that claim?

Did read this quote, though.

"But let's not forget there are a lot of enthusiasts out there who love products at this level," he added. "It's not targeted towards any particular genre of photography, in the same way that the 5 series evolved into that all-rounder type of camera. With the 5-series you see it in every single kind of photography situation you can imagine," he added."

The R5 is shaping up to be an excellent all-arounder!

I think the "sports camera" idea was mostly from this quote out of the official Canon Press release: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/about/newsroom/press-releases/press-release-details/2020/20200212-eos/20200212-eos

"Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next generation of full-frame mirrorless cameras planned for EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor. The new sensor will enable enhanced features such as high-speed continuous shooting up to approximately 20 frames-per-second (FPS) when using the silent shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS when using the mechanical shutter – A feature professional sports and wildlife photographers will find to be extremely impactful on their ability to capture fast-moving subjects"

The R5 is sounding like it’ll have the same long lifespan as the 5D4, just hope it’s as rugged.
