I think the so-called canon 'cripple hammer' has been blown well out of proportion. People seem to forgot that the 5D mkIV was launched 3.5 years ago. Back then its main competitor was the D810, which did 36MP @5fps. The mk iv is capable of (30MP@7fps) and for those who wanted extra detail, the 5DS/R was already avaliable. Similarly, A7RII provides 8 fewer MPs at the same frame rate compared to the 5Ds. I certainly do not believe any of the 5D series are crippled.
Of course, during the 4 year release cycle, Nikon and Sony has surged ahead with the D850 & A7RIII/IV. Now the time has come for the next iteration of the "5", and I see no reason why canon wouldn't release something that wasn't competitive.
Similarly, Canon's 1d series cameras has always had spec advantages (on paper at least) over Nikon's flagships.
Yes, canon's lower end models could do with some more features and for the DSLR video folks yes the crop is frustrating, but on the photography side, all high end Canon models (1dx, 5D, 7D) are every much competitive at the time of launch....Show more →
I distinctly remember finding, during 2010, when trying to decide upon my first new macro lens purchase, which would be followed by my first new DSLR purchase, that Canon and Nikon DSLRs, except perhaps at the very top end, tended to occupy alternating slots, rather than directly compete head-to-head, feature-for-feature, with each other. This was quite true with the D300s and 7D, which seemed to be aimed at similar types of shooters, but with the 7D having different strengths, and different shortcomings, than the D300/D300s.
(I had caught the fever for serious shooting, while handling my wife’s employer’s D300s, but had started shooting with a fortuitously-available bag of modest, pre-owned Canon kit, which included a quite decent Tokina macro lens, so was relatively brand-neutral. The EF 100/2.8L Macro IS seemed to be the better lens, so, Canon became my primary system, when I bought the Macro L, and then a 7D.)
