I would hope Canon's R5 would be able to beat the D850 that was released 2.5yrs ago, but it seems too good to be true for Canon to release a 5D level body with sports camera specifications for AF/fps.

Well, the frame rate is already official. 12/20 fps Certainly puts it with in sports level speed.
As for crippling AF performance, we are all guessing here. I think that the most likely scenario is that it would mirror the M6 II, which has 14fps Continious Hi release priority, 7fps Continious Hi focus priority. I maybe 12/8fps for the R5.

Mind you, I can't really tell the difference between the 2 aforementioned drive modes with my m6 ii. Both work fantastic in good day light, and becomes atrocious when light become dim. Which is something my Sonys are much more resistant to.

I distinctly remember finding, during 2010, when trying to decide upon my first new macro lens purchase, which would be followed by my first new DSLR purchase, that Canon and Nikon DSLRs, except perhaps at the very top end, tended to occupy alternating slots, rather than directly compete head-to-head, feature-for-feature, with each other. This was quite true with the D300s and 7D, which seemed to be aimed at similar types of shooters, but with the 7D having different strengths, and different shortcomings, than the D300/D300s.

(I had caught the fever for serious shooting, while handling my wife’s employer’s D300s, but had started shooting with a fortuitously-available bag of modest, pre-owned Canon kit, which included a quite decent Tokina macro lens, so was relatively brand-neutral. The EF 100/2.8L Macro IS seemed to be the better lens, so, Canon became my primary system, when I bought the Macro L, and then a 7D.)

Looks like canon is shutting down 5 of its plants for 2 weeks. This will likely delay the much anticipated R5. Bummer

So it will be delayed? It gives me a chance to stock up on good RF native glass and spread out the spend :-)

I hope the rumoured Pixel shift feature is true as this will tick pretty much all the boxes. If the sensor has competitive DR (>14EV), doesn’t come with a page full of asterisks beside each performance feature I would hope to grab this for Xmas. I always wait at least 6 months before getting a new camera, lready 1DXIII having an issue, not keen on being a best tester. I don’t think i’ll have much choice either, this camera will be in short supply for a long time IMO due to demand. Also waiting means you can finally start to get sale prices on the camera and fw updates should have fixed any issues.

Now please announce the 2.4kg RF 500 f/4 and 1.9kg RF 300 f/2.8.

I would say that IF:

* The R5 does indeed track subject AND eye focus at or near the level of Sony, and this is with full autofocus engaged at least an honest 8-10fps

* The noise results at levels of ISO6400 are at least like the R was at ISO3200 or better

* The battery life is indeed upped from the R.

* The annoying slide show effect of the blackout in the EVF is eliminated when shooting at higher speeds.

* The resolution is reasonably eye popping as expected

* The dynamic range has been bumped above 13.5

THEN and only THEN would I expect the R5 to be a big hit.

It certainly won't need all of that to be a big hit. Canon's had big hits with mediocre speced cameras many, many times. And there is no way it will have 1 stop improvement using a 45MP sensor vs the 30MP sensor in the R for high ISO noise.

Base ISO DR is an over-hyped metric.

As long as it had the slide show effect eliminated and had 10FPS with full functionality then it would be a hit for me. But can't speak to the masses.

As far as I am concerned it got back a scroll wheel and as far I see a kind of high speed joystick and a super dooper battery and mega FPS. Together with 4&8K I guess it will become a big hit for the "must have" masses anyway (nobody needs higher DR imo ). It is easy to make the masses happy.
Not me. The body would hit ME when it would offer 25MP less, no 8K and when it would fit my vallet. Guess I will have to wait for the R6 again. Could be a great partner for my 6D.

Hey Ralph - I believe the R6 will be released at the same time as the R5, with a lower price point. I want the 45mp R5!

How many plants does Canon have?
What do those plants make? Maybe they’re shutting down T8i plants only?
Has canon ever announced a specific delivery date?
Two weeks isn’t very long.
When we’re at work we shut down for 16 hours, the equivalent of two work days every day when we go home, then come back, turning the lights and start working!
They’ll do the same. Maybe they’ll leave the glass furnaces on SIMMER!!! LoL

I see only one (Canon Zhuhai) making cameras and lenses:

WoW, I looked at the drop-down for Japan, there are 25 factories making STUFF!
Anyone or all of them could be making one specialized part. Like a plastic part, or a printed board or a motor or a battery or who knows what!
The drop-down to Asia list another dozen factories as well.
I seriously doubt every part going into the R5 is made in one plant then assembled there too!!!
It’s just too bad that China tried to sweep this Corona thing under the rug when maybe they could have easily contained it from the very start. Four of the initial doctors and responders are dead from Corona as a result the initial cover up!

I will probably go with the R5 also.

If Canon releases a 100 megapixel body, not sure if that's the path I would follow. I have the 5DS and single shots from it are not near enough for the largest images I've been called about. For example, 18,000 x 18,000

I'd be better off using my 5DS or an EOS R and shooting multiple frames on a tripod, then merging them.

Sony's A7R iv pixel shift really isn't very good from reports and samples I've seen. I don't think I'd care to use such a feature if Canon implemented it.

For the full story you can see Canon Australia https://www.canon.com.au/about-canon/news-and-press-releases/canon-reveals-further-eos-r5-details

Animal Eye AF and dual pixel AF in 8k30p means that the ai servo question is more or less closed.

I am now super excited.

[...] 8K using the full width of the sensor [...]

If the sensor is then at least 8192 pix wide this will result in a minimum resolution of 8193x5462 = 44750166 ~45Mpix

interesting new info. Thanks.

"Upon launch, the Canon EOS R5 will also be supported by Canon Australia’s 5-year warranty when purchased from an authorised local dealer"

Just saw that Canon camera warranty in Australia is 5 yrs. Nice.
