Really looking forward to your review! Also, please don't try to sell us your presets...
I want a black one. I guess I'll have to wait as black comes later.
I’ve just read through the thread with idea of getting one.
It seems like there is / was a few problems with off centred lenses. Is this still the case? If so, do the users not mind - is that just the case with the Summicron 35mm 8e or is it production issues at LLL? I love the pics I see from this lens - if the lens that created them was off centre then it doesn’t matter to me, right?*
Hood options. It was stated that the LLL Irooa hood is a bit heavy and causes problems. I read that the Leica 12504 is an option. What about the 12585 - I’ve used that before and really liked it. Also what about the Leica Irooa - it’s not heavy? I like a good hood!
Filters. LLL or Leica?
Thanks.
*I shoot b&w digital. It’s the glow and the deep blacks I like about this lens… it looks awesome! I’m concerned I’m allowing it’s looks to win me over…

I've never seen an original Leica 8E tested for centering. I have two copies of the LLL 8E that are centered, one that was not, which I returned. The one that was decentered was off by a very large margin – the entire left side of the frame was not sharp at infinity and f/8. But if you buy from Popflash and encounter a copy with issues, you can return or exchange. If you buy a copy from eBay from another country, the return process is a pain due to the customs paperwork you have to fill out plus the transit time.
There are reports the 12585 hood causes mechanical vignetting with the early 35 Summicrons. I would avoid it.
The original IROOA hoods are likely not heavy brass since the original 8E lenses were also not brass. IROOA hoods on eBay that are scratched look to be showing silver, so likely they are aluminum. Someone else will know for sure.
A thick filter such as the Breakthrough filters with the external knurling will not allow the LLL IROOA hood to fit on the LLL 8E. The Leica UV filters fit with the LLL IROOA hood. Leica UV filters are very expensive and are aluminum, which is not as good as the brass construction of the LLL, B+W, and Heliopan filters. I do not have a B+W or Heliopan 39mm filter to test them.

Hey James,
Please let us know how the new LLL Panchro compares to the Elcan.

Will do! I can already see from the YouTube video posted that the Panchro's onion ring bokeh will be a stand-out characteristic. It does look to have a very rich falloff area from in to out of focus – like how oil paints blend versus acrylics if that makes sense. Looking forward to seeing how it all pans out (Pan-chros out? ).

I focused in the vertical format with and w/o the hood, swapping it in and out, for a few minutes. And I can't tell one way or another.
My OG Leica hood is not an IROOA - it is bigger than the LLL and it has a much thinner base. It is labelled Summaron 3.5cm Summicron 5cm.
Can you tell me more about the brass LLL IROOA you're referring to? From what I understand, these items are made of brass but come in different finishes.

*Clanking sounds inside my brain trying to sort out what you're saying* – see if I understand correctly:
You have the brass LLL IROOA pictured – no change in focus resistance in either orientation with/without it, right?
You also have a not-IROOA hood that is an original Leica but made for a different lens? Probably not relevant since I'm trying to ascertain if the OG IROOA is lighter aluminum versus the LLL IROOA.
Just FYI: I own both LLL black paint and original IROOA hoods: The LLL is 36 grams and the Leica original aluminum is only 18 grams. Does LLL makes one heavier than that?

Going back to this – if your brass LLL IROOA isn't affecting the focus resistance in vertical orientation, can you tell me if the tabs feel like the springs are easy to push or is there a lot of tension from the springs in the hood. Both my brass and titanium versions of the IROOAs have very tight springs in them. Surely they couldn't be making the brass and titanium ends of the barrels deform.
I'm going to retest mine looking to see if the problem is me as it usually is – that is, I may be accidentally resting a finger/hand against the hood when trying to focus, which would be putting resistance on the focusing since the lens barrel the hood is attached to moves during focus.

All the LLL hoods should weight the same since they're all brass with different finishes. The bare brass one might be every so slightly lighter than a black paint version – not sure how much the paint weighs
I was just thinking that maybe the small but extra weight leveraged at the end of the lens barrel might be adding resistance.
Ok, I'm officially brain dead. I think it was indeed interference from my hand or fingers on the end of the lens barrel causing the extra resistance. I didn't think about the fact that the lens barrel (and therefore the hood) moves when focusing, so I was allowing myself to use the hood as a bit of a brace when holding the lens sometimes. Ugh. Will go back and cleanup my post about this.

er.. ok, so we good?
My Leica hood came with my Summicron 50 DR, and is marked for use on the 35 Summaron or 50 Summicron.

It is the one in the picture I posted on the previous page.
