Lol I have that one too, it can indeed take decent pics, just don’t bother to use it at wide apertures near MFD, it becomes too soft and it gives a completely new sense to the term LoCA

hahah thanks for the tip. I just got it today and is a nice centered copy and pretty sharp wherever I place my subject so not bad. I will test for that "feature" you described

Indeed if the 36MP rumours are true, that sensor is a beast, and 6MP is bugger all resolution difference. I’d be more inclined to sell A9 and A7RIII for now to fund A9II and maybe in 12 months pick up the inevitably heavily discounted A7RIV. By all reports A7RIV AF is a big improvement over A7RIII, so would be a nice back-up when FL limited to A9II. But by then we’ll have decent competition from Nikon as with their new 60MP camera and god forbid maybe even Canon will have an EOS R that AF moving objects faster than 2fps. All I know is that I’ll never leave Nikon just for their PF lenses alone.
That is true....I said the same thing a few weeks ago....but I've seriously considered it recently...only the 500PF is keeping me around in Nikon land at this point. Which is sort of funny as I wasn't even excited about that lens when it first came out...didn't even preorder it. But using the Z7 recently I've restored some of my faith that Nikon is closer than I thought to a competitive MILC....so maybe I can save the 500PF for the next MILC camera from Nikon that will take the AF (and hopefully a fast readout sensor) up to Sony level.

I don't think we can assume that the A9II will be 36MP. If you look closely at the specs the 36MP sensor that was the basis of that rumor at Sonyalpharumors, that sensor was clearly designed for 8K video. It has several 8K video readout modes in 16 X 9 and in these modes it even had slightly more pixels available on the long side. I just don't think that video centric sensor is going to be the one in the A9 II.

I'm setting myself up for this to be the big "disappointment" when the A9II is announced....36MP may be too good to be true....

I think it is unsafe to assume anything, but if you look at the current A9 sensor that is just as much designed for 6K video, which it does indeed do in the Venice. In fact IMX310 and IMX435 are very similar, both are multi aspect ratio sensors (oversized I guess so they can shoot with a 43mm diagonal both in 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios). They both have more than 8 channels to read out all that data. In the A9 however most of the video modes are disabled, they even disabled the stacked DRAM when shooting video so you get bad rolling shutter performance. 16bit mode is also supported by IMX310 but disabled in the A9, not that it matters with the DR of the A9. Of the known stacked sensors IMX435 is the one which has most in common with the current one in the A9. But of course, the reason they used IMX310 in A9 could also be because that one was the only one available at the time.
