Wanted to ask a question and instead of starting a new thread I will just ask here. For those of you that own both the R3 or R4 and A9 do you find the images out of the A9 lacking? I know the resolution difference but have read comments saying that compared to the R3 or R4 and because the A9 has filtering that the pictures are not near as sharp. I have the R3, R4 and A9 and always thought the images from the A9 looked great. Sharp, good contrast and the colors are very pleasing to me. Both RAW and JPG look great. The only downside I have found is the resolution and not being able to crop like I do on my other high MP cameras. Maybe its just me. ...Show more →
I don't have the R IV, but I don't find the files of the A9 to be lacking at all.

Versus the r3 I certainly don't find a9 files lacking. The two cameras are on par to me in terms of sharpness, although of course fewer AF misses on the a9....so technically it could be considered sharper

I don't have the R3 or R4 to compare to the A9 but I do shoot the D850 along side it. I have no issues with sharpness of A9 files compared to D850 AA-less files.
I have the A9 for two years now and the R4 for two weeks - the IQ of the A9 is very good in my opinion -sometimes a ask myself why the R4 the A9 is good enough and very reliable.

After using my R4 for a couple of days I almost had myself talked in to selling my A9. Not that the R4 AF can quite keep up with the A9 even though its vastly improved over the R3. However I just went outside and did some shooting with my A9 and the silent shutter, black out free, 20fps is just awesome. It handles ISO a little better too and I rarely use the mechanical shutter in it. I would always have to use the mechanical shutter when capturing moving subjects in the R4. Burst or not. Its kind of nice having the smaller file sizes sometimes. However I also rarely shoot sports or fast moving wildlife so that is why I was tempted to sell it. I just can't at this point. It is still so different and such a different tool than the R4 I am just going to keep it. I will lose even more money especially after the 9II is released but that is the way it goes sometimes. I probably will not upgrade to the A9II though. I think the R4 and A9 gives me everything I need and the images produced by both are outstanding. Both JPGs and RAW.

I'm with you on the R4+a9. Instead of dreaming of upping my a9 to the a9ii I'll dream that Sony is secretly embracing diffractive lens technology and will soon release a 400mm DO/PF F4
Forgot to mention, dinking around in the back yard yesterday, the EOS 400DOii did very well on the R4...at least for birds having landed on a perch. I'd tried the Nikkor 300PF the day prior with no hopes going in, and coming out with no hope. At least I've got a 400mm prime that works. I'll test it on BIF in November at the dam (with the R4).

I'm thinking about this the same way as the both of you, but in reverse. Since I have the R3 and no A9, I'm waiting to see what the A9ii has to offer and whether the combo of A7R3 & A9ii makes sense for me.
If the A9II shows up with 36MP, one might wonder if you'd need to keep the A7R3 at all.
I'm on the fence with the A7R4...just too happy with my A7R3 to be motivated to take the hit, plus I want to see what all the A9II offers. As much as I am a megapixel-hound, the reality is that only some of my shooting would really benefit from more megapixels than I already have, and the features of the A9 have always been tempting.
Maybe I'll just hold onto my A7R3 and pick up a used A9 when prices come down upon release of the A9II. We'll see.
I had some serious GAS for A7RIV a couple days ago...I've treated it with common sense and will continue to wait on the A9II. If the A9II is 36MP then I don't think I will need an A7RIV...if A9II is only 30MP then I may have to rethink things.
Meanwhile I'll go back to evaluating my loaner Z7 and decide if I want to replace my D850 with it.

I keep thinking of getting a second a7r iv to carry - need some willpower to wait for the a9II announcement. If it's at 36MP I think it will be the ultimate two body setup.
If the A9II is 36MP then I think that will be the ultimate 1 body setup.
The A7IV is very demanding on lenses and technique and you are only going to realise the benefits of 61MP with the best lenses and great technique. Oh, but wait one of the reasons I was thinking of going for the A7IV was for 26MP in crop mode which is incredible for wildlife. I forgot about that.
So then I think the ultimate kit is A9 + A7IV

I have the R3 and the A9 with some of the sharpest lenses and yes you can see the R3 is of course more detailed BUT the A9 is no slouch so I dont feel like I am degrading my product unless I am going for a HUGE print or crop.
And the A9 AF is so good that any miss on the R3 can make images very comparable in the end. After the getting the A9, I started to get more interested in a future maybe 36MP A9ii than on getting the R4, to be honest.
