If you talk to sport photographers, time constraints are brutal in delivering images, such that they find 20-24MP more than enough, 36 MP overkill. If you don't shoot jpgs (even then), you fill up your card with 20fps bursts pretty fast. Images need to be processed and sent as fast as possible - some, like Thom Hogan, would wish for even faster transfer possibilities instead of more MP.
Maybe some wildlife shooters (mostly BIF) want higher MP numbers, eps. if they lack lenses. Getting the golden cow perfectly pleasing both groups isn't easy.

That is what I thought and when I brought that up recently a number of sports photographers on the forum said that they wanted more MPs. Good for me because I want more MPs for the birds.

p.4 #3 · New A9II rumor thread

There are some rumours Sony will use the IMX311 sensor in the A9II, however this makes ZERO sense. The IMX311 is a weird sensor with a 41mmx30mm size (still 43.3mm dagonal however) that has a diamond array layout. It is a 48,9MP BSI stacked sensor with many readout modes available. However not a single readout mode is even close to 3:2 aspect ratio. The much rumored 36MP mode is actually 9K x 4K or 4.5:2. However there is another sensor announced at same time which looks very promising for A9II and A7sIII, the IMX313. This is also a 48.9MP BSI stacked sensor, but a regular Bayer in 3:2 aspect ratio that not only offer a ton of readout modes but 16bit ADC's. Even at 48.9MP this can offer 21.6fps in 14 bit mode and at 35.5MP offers 28fps in 14 bit or 36gps at 12 bit. Also offers 12 bit video, but I suspect that would be an A7sIII feature only. They could use the same sensor but run them in different modes to differentiate the cameras.

If this IMX313 is the actual sensor we'll be in heaven oh and they could allow it to run in 20MP mode to for PJ's worried about file size, here it offers 36fps!

I think that sensor is going to be reserved for the A9r. I expect this sensor or something similar in the A9 II:

It will have much faster readout and 30 MP is really a quite decent size for sports. I think it would hit a sweet spot and if wildlife photogs can wait for the A9r with the 49 MP stacked BSI sensor they should be very happy too.

"Only" 30MP will be a tough sell for me. I may still get one but it will have to have a lot of other new features along with it.

But would you be excited for a 49 MP stacked BSI A9r?

I think that depends a lot on the resolution. At 36mp, it doesn’t add that much cropping potential. At 48, you’re talking. But even then, if indeed priced at $5k it’s quite expensive compared to a D850 with grip and 45mp, which most likely will remain the better body but with weaker tech. How much of those tech improvements matter in real life then becomes the next question.

I held the A7RIV for the first time today at B&H. I assume the A9II if and when released will have a similar body.

Unfortunately, the new body makes no change that I could tell in the space between the grip and the lens. When I put a larger (70-200GM, 100-400GM) on the A9 over the course of several hours I'll wind up with a blister from the rubbing between my middle finger knuckle and the lens. A bandaid is my work around but it's always been one of the most annoying things about the A9 to me. Along with the boxy, uncomfortable vertical grip. And the multi-selector (which has been changed) which digs into my thumb after a while but is not a big deal because I rarely have to manually move around the focus point since firmware 5.0.

^^^ Did you try the a7RIV with grip?

Given that many used a grip on the older a9 body purely for the added ergonomics, do you feel that a guy could forego the grip with the new body?

I shoot with the 100-400 or 200-600 on the A9 for hours and have no problems with the grip.

Different grips for different folks.

It is the IMX435 sensor the rumors claim is most likely for A9II. I posted links to it's specs earlier in this thread or you can just google it.

I asked Thom Hogan about his opinion. He is often along the sideline of games and shared his opinion he gathered by talking to colleagues there, too. They want lower MPs. I had the chance to talk to a German Bundesliga Soccer Photographer, who also agreed with Hogans opinion.
I think it depends on whom you work for and deadlines.

Better body in what respect? I would say quite a difference in tech. 7fps without grip only. AFMA necessary, much weaker AF performance, blackout etc. For me personally, they are not even close when we only factor in an a9.

Agree. Consider the fact that the D5 has 20MP only and a big bunch of sports pros are very happy with it?

Well the two sensor aren't that different. The IMX435 does have some better specs, but it is a sensor for a lot of different uses (industrial cameras, camcorders, and stills cameras) and less tailored for stills photography. They might well use it, but I am still betting on the 554 in the A9 II keeping the files a little smaller and the 313 in the A9r that is still a ways away. We'll find out pretty soon for the A9 II, but we will have to wait for the A9r.

Why stir the pot with multiple posts asserting that there is going to be an a9r? Sonyalpharumors rumor reporting is what is fueling anticipation of an a9ii. What is the source of your a9r anticipation? Claiming how an unrumored camera is going to be better than a rumored camera seems a bridge to far even for a speculation thread like this.

I said with grip. AF isn’t much weaker. Better body in terms of ergonomics, weather sealing and use with large lenses. Yes, as I said tech is different, but what matters in the end are the results you can get. Plenty people get great results with the D850 on BIF and love the cropping ability.

I surely would be....I'd take it with "only" 10FPS if I had to. But I really don't see Sony adding another line of cameras at this time. Just like I've erased the hope for an APS-C A9 type camera, I've also erased the hope for an A9R line. My hopes now lie with a 36MP A9II.

36MP with 200-600 lens will give me slightly more pixel reach than my current reach king in D850/500PF. Having the zoom flexibility is nice but giving up some portability and weight savings with the 200-600 vs 500PF is the downside.

With only 30MP then the pixel reach still favours the D850/500PF but only by 17mm which is pretty meaningless.

**all that is true if my math is correct, which I'm never sure if it is**. sqrt(45.7/36) * 500 = focal length to compare to 600mm on the 36MP sensor??

AF can't compete with the A9. This is not a problem, though. We really don't compare aplles to apples, here. We don't speak about the D5 vs. the A9. However, there are many here having compare the latter two wrt AF. And we don't speak about whether people find it sufficently good. It certainly is, which is why people get good results.

AF accuracy :
https://blog.kasson.com/nikon-z6-7/z7-af-accuracy-compared-to-dslrs/

Ergonomics is personal preference. I find the A9 great ergonomically with grip.
