Why stir the pot with multiple posts asserting that there is going to be an a9r? Sonyalpharumors rumor reporting is what is fueling anticipation of an a9ii. What is the source of your a9r anticipation? Claiming how an unrumored camera is going to be better than a rumored camera seems a bridge to far even for a speculation thread like this.

We are speculating about rumors. We also know that Sony has released specs for a 49 MP stacked BSI sensor for still cameras. My speculation is that sensor will make its way into a Sony camera, before too long but that it won't be the sensor in the upcoming A9 II. That to me suggests that before too long there will be a new camera with that 49 MP stacked BSI sensor, and keep in mind Sony has released specs of a 30 MP stacked BSI sensor which is capable of amazingly fast fps, a 36 MP stacked BSI sensor with very fast fps, and a 49 MP stacked BSI sensor with very fast fps. Those sensors aren't rumors and I am basing my speculations on the specifications for those sensors that have been released.

Edit: Oh and I never claimed that an A9r with a sensor like the specs of IMX 313 sensor would be better than an A9 II, I just said it would have a stacked sensor and have more megapixels. The A9 II in all likelihood would have other advantages that such an A9r would not and specifically I would expect the A9 II to have faster sensor readout resulting in a more capable silent shutter and better AF.

AF can't compete with the A9. This is not a problem, though. We really don't compare aplles to apples, here. We don't speak about the D5 vs. the A9. However, there are many here having compare the latter two wrt AF. And we don't speak about whether people find it sufficently good. It certainly is, which is why people get good results.

AF accuracy :

Ergonomics is personal preference. I find the A9 great ergonomically with grip.

I don’t have a D850, but plenty of people are very happy with its CAF performance. I’m comparing real world scenarios. Treating the Sony as a Ferrari and the Nikon as a BMW, one is better, but doesn’t get you to your goal any faster while potentially being more expensive, considering we’re talking about a rumor.

If its intended for sports shooters voice tagging would be a needed feature already offered for quite some time by Canon and Nikon. Helps a great deal with sports with no or difficult to see numbers.

IMHO the A9 is for action shooters, like sports, BIFs, etc.
The A9II presumably will target the same market.
I got the A9 very, very early on and got spoiled by its unique features.
It has become my all-time favorite FF camera. I use all my cameras with a battery grip.
The A9II needs to add substantially more pixels while building on the other unique A9 features.
But first, before making a purchasing decision, I would like for Sony to deliver to us paying customers the promised Firmware Version 6.0 for the A9.

Nobody seems to take seriously the possibility that the A9II will have CFExpress card slots. Sony has released their CFExpress card and are using them in cinema products. Nikon is using them in the Z6 and Z7. Why not the A9II? Slow buffer clearing is one of my main gripes with the A9. A CFExpress card or two would would solve that nicely.

Agreed but from the leaked photo it is same body as A7R IV so I guess that rules that possibility out. Would at least help if they made an option to write every other file to each memory card in parallel, and give a bit of backup too.

Why? Does the a7RIV not have enough space for a CFExpress card and an SDII?

@ColinF, Yeah, I think you are right. I am looking at my A7R4 (I've had it for nearly 3 hours) and there is not enough space for 2 CFExpress cards. That would require 13mm more space and it's not there.

@randomguy, I don't think there is enough space for even one CFExpress in the vertical arrangement, and the photo showing the door makes it clear they are retaining the vertical arrangement. Sony will never split the card slots between two physically incompatible card types. As much as I would like to see a faster slot I would not want physically incompatible slots.

Edit: Actually I would prefer incompatible slots to get a fast CFExpress slot. In fact I would prefer a single slot if it is a fast CFExpress. It's not going to happen because there a too few who agree with me. The howls of agony on this and many other sites would be deafening.

That wouldn't matter to me at all, as when I go out shooting locally, I never write to a second card as a back-up, only if I'm going on a trip somewhere where the loss importance factor is much higher.

I see you commented while I was editing.
Would you buy it if it had one CFExpress slot? If so, we are up to 2 who would. That may be all there are.

Reluctantly, yes. As you may have read elsewhere, I am presently selling all of my Nikon gear (D850, grip, extender are already sold - just lenses left) in order to move to Sony (a9II and 200-600), and after I get them I will even sell my 7DII and 100-400 II which I presently use for the kayak. So I will have one body and one lens. Sweet.

We hear that the XQD cards are more reliable, but I'm not sure about that; it seems that they physically are stronger, but possibly just as prone to actual (internal) failure as anything else. If the CFExpress are shown to be more reliable from failure, then I suppose I would feel more comfortable with a single slot, but still nervous if on a trip.

If a camera company has their foot on the gas like Sony, why hold back? Give us the fastest possible card for this type of beastly camera. It was perplexing why Nikon - while throwing everything at the D850 - left out GPS. The 5DIV had it, and it was great to have.

Could the reason Sony might be comfortable with the SD cards be that they are not the bottleneck? Also, there are now tough SD cards that hold up to everything but blenders.

I watched the video, and while those are no doubt physically tough, it usually isn't physical trauma that causes cards to fail, it's just a failure of an electronic nature, internally. Seemingly perfectly good and unabused cards will fail.

There have been many reports over the years of standard old SD cards surviving a trip through the laundry, I did it myself once, so his water test wasn't all that impressive.

Yes, that is true. But I have heard that as far as electronic failure, the rates are about the same between SD and XQD cards.

Geoff I asked Poof for her 6400 yesterday shooting Sea Lions and freaked Tiny green box on the giant seals eye haha! I'd forgotten using the a9 the whole trip though the Riii did put the animal eye green square on bears eyes.

At least Sony made mention of FW 6.0 during the A6600 presentation so they haven't forgotten about it. They said September, before they said Summer. If they keep both promises then it has to release before Sept 23rd when Autumn starts.

Not sure if it will be a whole new camera with just two features being added but I'm excited to try Animal Eye-AF which everyone else has had for months. I really hope the long delay for FW 6.0 means there are some improvements to Animal Eye-AF and really wishful thinking is that they add the red/white focus points as

Agree. Consider the fact that the D5 has 20MP only and a big bunch of sports pros are very happy with it?

Well it’s strongly suspected the D6 will be 24MP, hopefully they can cope with this massive jump in resolution!

Of course the easy way out of this is for someone to release a high performance high MP FF. So far only Nikon has done that with the D850. Sony could have done so much more with the A7RIV and used it’s new 49MP BSI stacked sensor rather than go for MP glory. The A9II should have been announced first, then the A7RIV could have used the A9 AF system but still play second fiddle to the A9II. Hopefully Nikon either update the D850 or or preferably offer a high performance high MP Z camera with at least as good AF.

Pardon me...the 99II is 42mpix that shoots at 12 fps. That 850 shoots at 7 fps without a $1000 add on.

Ha! I saw that blender video too. Just bought my first two UHS-II Sony Tough Series cards. Was only $10 more than the regular 300/299 Sony G cards so thought I would give it a try. I've never seen close to 300/299 on these G cards brand new or not so brand new. I'll be testing the Tough cards soon too.
