There are some rumours Sony will use the IMX311 sensor in the A9II, however this makes ZERO sense. The IMX311 is a weird sensor with a 41mmx30mm size (still 43.3mm dagonal however) that has a diamond array layout. It is a 48,9MP BSI stacked sensor with many readout modes available. However not a single readout mode is even close to 3:2 aspect ratio. The much rumored 36MP mode is actually 9K x 4K or 4.5:2. However there is another sensor announced at same time which looks very promising for A9II and A7sIII, the IMX313. This is also a 48.9MP BSI stacked sensor, but a regular Bayer in 3:2 aspect ratio that not only offer a ton of readout modes but 16bit ADC's. Even at 48.9MP this can offer 21.6fps in 14 bit mode and at 35.5MP offers 28fps in 14 bit or 36gps at 12 bit. Also offers 12 bit video, but I suspect that would be an A7sIII feature only. They could use the same sensor but run them in different modes to differentiate the cameras.
If this IMX313 is the actual sensor we'll be in heaven oh and they could allow it to run in 20MP mode to for PJ's worried about file size, here it offers 36fps!
I think that sensor is going to be reserved for the A9r. I expect this sensor or something similar in the A9 II:
It will have much faster readout and 30 MP is really a quite decent size for sports. I think it would hit a sweet spot and if wildlife photogs can wait for the A9r with the 49 MP stacked BSI sensor they should be very happy too.
"Only" 30MP will be a tough sell for me. I may still get one but it will have to have a lot of other new features along with it.
But would you be excited for a 49 MP stacked BSI A9r?
I surely would be....I'd take it with "only" 10FPS if I had to. But I really don't see Sony adding another line of cameras at this time. Just like I've erased the hope for an APS-C A9 type camera, I've also erased the hope for an A9R line. My hopes now lie with a 36MP A9II.
36MP with 200-600 lens will give me slightly more pixel reach than my current reach king in D850/500PF. Having the zoom flexibility is nice but giving up some portability and weight savings with the 200-600 vs 500PF is the downside.
With only 30MP then the pixel reach still favours the D850/500PF but only by 17mm which is pretty meaningless.
