I wonder if anybody has used this lens for portrait work and how the result may look like. Should be quite interesting to break the "rules" for classical portrait focal-lengths also on the long side, considering that there are quite a few portraits on the short focal-length side....

I was invited by Sony when they showcased two new lenses in June 2019. We had a chance to play with both lenses and to try them out. Ironically, Sony had two setups for portraits, complete with studio lighting, etc. for these long lenses. While there was a male model at the 200-600mm setup but nobody was at the GM 600mm setup. There was a young lady that came with her boyfriend or husband and I asked her whether she would be willing to model for a few shots and she agreed.

So, here are my very first and last images taken with that lens for portraits. As it turned out the flash output was way too much for the ISO setting/aperture of the lens. I just used my SD card, everything else was provided by Sony. I didn't change the setting there either. The over-exposure caused the WB to be off and I had a tough time adjusting for her skin tone. Anyway, here are the two sample images out of 10 or so taken back then.

I would not use that lens for studio shoot, maybe outdoors would be okay. The focal length would put a considerable distance between you and the model, requiring you to speak up, not quite scream but still to give some direction to the model. A 600mm lens would be difficult to hand hold to compose precisely. You need a tripod or monopod for that purpose, at least for me. The longest FL I have used for portraits prior to this was 300mm f/2.8.

Very nice portraits. And it's very interesting what a long focal length does to a face. Strangely, it does not feel very distant, in fact it feels very direct and "intimate". I wonder if the typical focal-length of 85-135 mm for portraits has more to do with practical considerations (distance for talking ok but not be too close, blurr due to long focal-length and therefore forced faster ss and higher iso) than aesthetical considerations. For me, bigger distance and therefore longer focal length yields way more "dignified" look. See https://www.redbullcontentpool.com/premium/photography/news/how-focal-length-affects-shape-of-the-face
It should be said of course, it is the distance which changes the face, not the focal length.

Is the 600/4GM at all capable of producing images that do nót look beautiful? Being on the lookout for more reach (currently shooting the 500PF on the D500), I am trying to look around with an open mind, with choices body wise of the Canon R5, Sony A9II, or Nikon Z7II combined with various lenses options.
I find that each time I visit this thread, I stop thinking and just start enjoying the images. Perhaps this is the best indication I could look for.
Perhaps I should consider selling all my present gear and just settle on the A9+600GM plus coonverters. The great thing about the 600GM, apart from the images it produces on the A9, is that its "in-use" weight is managable at 3,3 kg for handholding. Compare that with the Nikon 600/4 at 4,2 kg "in-use" weight.

I'd say the most reach/performance would come from a Canon 600III with TCs and an R5. Otherwise the A9 and 600GM/TCs.
I don't feel the A7RIV (even though it does provide the most reach of all) is better than the R5 combo.

Only thing is that I can't bring myself to spend loads of $$ on an EF lens at this point in time. So I'm holding out for a native 600 RF prime. Or just waiting for the A9R and then I can sell off my Canon gear and use A9R with 600GM

I can really only make the investment in a 600/4 lens once, so being happy with the D500+500PF combo (which I will keep likely forever anyhow due to its superb weight/size 500mm) I am weighing this very carefully. If at all possible, I want to prevent ending up in a system that I will want to switch away from at a later stage, I am kind of done with that. So I spend above average time browsing the image threads of lenses like the Sony 600GM and cameras like the Canon R5.
Somehow, I keep coming back to the Sony 600GM, I don't know why. There are some very skilled shooters in the Canon R5 thread with an EF600mm f4, very impressive! But here's what: I like the look of the Sony 600GM images a lot more. Is it down to post processing by the users, I don't know, but I don't think so. The Sony 600GM has this very natural silky look, with beautiful OOF rendering. The images are sharp for sure, but don't have the harshness of the Canon and Nikon counterparts to the 600GM.

I downloaded some raw samples from the A9+600GM, you can crop to 1:1 and still images look fully believable. I am sure Sony will come with one or the other higher pixelled A9 in future. In the back of my mind is still the Z600/4 on the Nikon roadmap, and I have the Z7 still, but I somehow doubt it will equal the Sony 600GM for its beautiful and natural look. Somehow Sony seems to have done something special with the 600GM. If ultimate performance is paramount, then sure, it is worth keeping up with where Canon is going, Nikon not so much, but I would happily carry the Sony600GM around for the rest of my shooting life. Shortly I considered getting the 600E for my D500, but it would be crazy, having to lug around an extra kg for nothing at all.
Possibly I will be trading in my Z7 with Z lenses for a Sony A9III and 200-600mm to start with this spring, and then add the 600GM the year after...

@ChrisMak... I am not sure that it is the lens/body combination that is making the difference here. There are many talented photographers using the Nikon 600mm E w/ DSLRs or MILCs, Canon 600mm III w/ DSLRs or MILCs, and Sony 600G w/ MILCs.
However, it seems that many of the bird photographers on FM have made a switch to the Sony system because of the A9/A9II's black-out free and AFc experience. If these two features are critical to you, then Sony is the only game in town with non-adapted glass.
On the other hand, if you are content with the DSLR experience, then the Canon 1DxIII w/ 600mm mkIII would an outstanding piece of kit, as would a D5 or D6 w/ a 600mm E lens.
Like many Nikon nature shooters who are trying to embrace the transition to mirrorless, the pull of Sony is tough to resist. The relative affordability of the A9 (and even A9II) paired with a 200-600mm lens that has an internal zoom continues to draw my attention. Furthermore, Canon has introduced their 100-500L, and while a bit slow for my taste, it appears to be a real winner as well.
While Nikon has a lot of good looking glass on the drawing board (100-400S, 200-600, 600mm f/?, and 400mm f/?), they remain vaporware until one can actually buy something!

I guess I feel your pain!

If I were a betting man, I would bet that the next camera iteration in the A9-line will be introduced/announced first than the Canon RF 600mm lens. While prices of the new Sony lenses are high but Canon is definitely not shy in pricing their new RF lenses, especially their top of the line RF lenses. Time will tell in terms of the announcement.

Actually, I ám content with the dslr experience, even though I am always open to and curious about new technologies. Main reason for this is the OVF experience in outdoors light. If the Nikon 600E had been the weight of the Sony and Canon 600mm lenses, then I would have had no second thought and added it to the 500PF for use on the D500. But the extra kg weight for the 600E is just a no-go, (almost a kg with hood) as I do a lot of hiking and never use a tripod. My background is years of use of the 3,1 kg Pentax DA560mm f5.6 lens. I wanted better AF and BIF capability, so I sold it for the Canon 400DOII with converters. That has been a bumpy ride, and I ended up selling it for the Nikon 500PF, meaning to add a 600PF down the road. But as you know, the lens that you really want never seems to materialize, or pops up with another brand

Getting to grips with a 13000,- investment in a single lens, I have decided that it should be my final lens purchase. I like longer focal lengths, 600mm is my favorite. Since the Nikon option is too heavy, why not embrace mirrorless after all? I will keep the D500+500PF for BIF on hikes where light weight is really appreciated. Besides, I would regret selling the 500PF at a later stage, I am sure, it is a great lens, and the D500 a great body. I think Nikon will complete the Z line up, but the Sony 600GM is the near perfect 600mm f4 going by images and reviews posted. You have to make plans somewhere, and should the Nikon Z600/4 pop up in 2021 and be spectacular, and have the same gracefull IQ of the Sony 600GM, then who knows. For now, I will be looking out for the A9III. Main thing is getting away from the "TC for reach" approach, which brought me little good. Not meaning that I will never use a TC with a 600mm/4 lens, but it has to be an "add-on", not a means of getting to my favorite default focal length. Also, the light where I live is sub-optimal at least half of the year, and F4 will be a blessing in that regard as well.

I have been photographing 2 or 3 hummingbirds that visited my Honeysuckle plant in my backyard in the last few days. I used my GM 600mm, first with the 10mm extension tube to be able to focus closer than the MFD of the lens. Then I did get greedier and used the 16mm, until finally today, I used the combo of 10mm and 16mm extension tubes, and I could get the hummer and some surroundings just like what I would compose. But I did crop the first image some for better composition and the second was cropped significantly. I also use a reflector to direct more light on the hummer. It didn't bother the bird at all as it kept on coming back.

Thank you very much, Tom! The set of extension tubes (10 and 16mm) reduces the minimum focusing distance of the lens from 4.5m to approximately 3m and as such, it increases the magnification ratio. The longer the extension the larger the magnification ratio. The tubes still transmit electronics signals, including the AF signal and the AF performance didn’t get noticeably affected negatively, at least I didn’t notice it. The amount of transmitted light did get reduced slightly.
