Do you use the lens without the hood when it's handheld? It's easier to hold steady and much less bulky so it's easier to move around. Haven't really experienced low light flare since I've just started shooting with hood off. Rain would definitely be harder to keep off the front element though.

Who are you addressing your question to?

Roel,
I used the original lens hood only in the very beginning. I have been using a shorter lens hood since then. I sent you a reply to your PM with more information on a shorter lens hood.

Hope this helps,
Joshua

I've never shot with the hood off; it would feel too precarious exposing that big, expensive front glass.

I use a 3D printed hood that was made by a member on FM. It is just a couple inches long. I despise the big hoods that come with the lenses....makes your lens a sail in the wind. My short hood protects my front element enough for my piece of mind. My OEM hood is packed away in the box.

Interesting - I don’t suppose you’d be willing to post a pic of the hood on the lens? The Kickstarter campaign for a “universal” silicone retractable lens hood caught my eye, but I never know how deep a hood must be to be effective, esp. for 600 mm...

I like the camo on the outside and the felt coat to minimize flare on the inside he included is great. And for a minimal cost, he did include a lens cap.

The friction method to hold the lens hood over the lens works 95% of the time for me. One drawback I notice when I was shooting at temperatures over 100F degrees. The material used expanded at a greater rate than the diameter of the lens under those conditions. So, the hood became loose and could fall off the lens. Now, that I am aware of that, I would take the necessary steps when shooting under those conditions again.
