The male white-tailed kite brought back a freshly caught mouse/vole close to the nest to entice two chicks to learn how to catch the prey mid-air. This particular sequence started out great but there are tall trees there and the actual transfer took place behind those trees to my chagrin... . But fortunately the training happened more than once that day. And yes, those 2 chicks did compete against each other.

Does anyone have, or know of, any samples of astrophotography with the 600mm f/4?
Thanks,
Dan

Dan, not with the 600mm but I came across some images taken with the Sony GM 400mm that impressed me. It is in the middle of this page here: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1255248/1779?b=2. The poster’s name is @Linwood-F.

Thanks. Those are impressive images. The 400mm is a definite telescope substitute.

Those are impressive images. I know there has to be a workflow/process + hardware and software for this kind of photography. Anyone have a clue where to start?

I am sure Linwood would be able to steer you in the right direction. I would contact him if you are interested in doing astrophotography. Although it is intriguing, I don’t think I would be able to do it.

Astrophotography stacking is the workflow term generally. You take a bunch (dozens to hundreds usually) of relatively short exposures, and stack together. Signal is generally additive but noise only goes up by the square root of the number of images, so it is a better (and easier) technique than extremely long exposures.

You need a tracking mount, maybe even a guided mount, on which to carry the lens (tracking means it blindly tries to follow the stars by being aligned with the celestrial north pool and turning at earth's rotation rate; guiding means a separate camera is used to track a star's motion and correct the tracking).

If curious google terms like "astrophotography tracking mount" or "astrophotography stacking software".

Warning: It is both addictive and expensive.

Yes, from today....I'm trying to decide if I should hang onto the A7RIV or not. I did most of my testing at 1200mm because that would be the main reason for me to keep it. Otherwise I'd just rather use an extra TC on the A9II with both my lenses over the RIV. I'm leaning towards selling the RIV to build up some cash to buy a faster lens for the R5.

The R5 honeymoon, new gear period, is coming to an end so I'll likely be back doing a lot more Sony shooting when it is more suited than the R5.

Being a mixed system shooter is always a headache and wastes time actually making good photos (because I spend too much time fiddling with testing things).

Sony AED Mark II with full bird support would eliminate most of my reasons for keeping the R5 right now. Come on Sony...make my life easier

I wonder when the R5 will get its firmware update to be more reliable...I would sure hate to miss shots because i couldn't pull the battery out in time.

Do you use the lens without the hood when it's hand held? It's easier to hold steady and much less bulky so it's easier to move around. Haven't really experienced low light flare since I've just started shooting with hood off. Rain would definitely be harder to keep off the front element though. Also, I use the 2x 90% of the time, which makes hand held shots harder to steady.
