Most of the time, I prefer a really high shutter speed to catch/freeze the action entirely. BTW, the lens is plenty sharp even at wide open aperture.

@AGeoJO thanks for the reply and nice shot. i got the lens recently so learning the ins-and-outs. was under the impression that, given you could hit your target SS, it would be preferable to stop down. will have to do some testing myself!

After or if you reach the desired shutter speed and you decide to stop down, you will bump up the ISO. You have to strike a nice balance between those shooting factors. There are no rules, of course, and it boils down to your preference. Enjoy your new lens!

Question about modes and steady shot on the 200-600.

Do I keep steady shot on or off when panning in mode #2 or tracking erratic birds in mode #3, as I will have high shutter speeds ? .. I think I keep it on when using mode #1 which is more for still captures

I keep my OSS on 100% of the time regardless whether it is handheld or on tripod and regardless of the shutter speed. Lately, I am shooting it less and less using the tripod though. I set it in either in mode #2 or mode #3 and basically not in mode #1. Frankly, the difference between the modes is minute, if any, but definitely noticeable between on and off. Just my experience though…

My reason to go to f6.3 is to get faster shutter speeds without bumping ISO too much. But given decent light and shooting distances I usually have too little DOF for my taste. So with good light I default to shooting f7.1 for BIF. My lens is also minutely sharper at f7.1, but that's hardly relevant compared to DOF, movement and noise issues. For sitting birds I tend to use f9, as with f10 diffraction becomes noticable.
