Hi Mike,

You are getting extremely sharp images now with your A7rIV and the 200-600mm G lens. I am not sure if all of your issues have been resolved with the combination yet, but at least for "stationary" birds, these look really good and quite sharp.

Thanks. I am still not happy with the focus in lower light situations, but with decent light the accuracy is very good. I think I will switch to the A9/200-600/1.4xTC in lower light.

Flash is good for that nice dark background. It makes the subject really standout. However, I stopped using flash after an incident in the cloud forest outside of Quito. The hermit below was flashed by a photographer, which scared him badly and he flew into a window as a result. Luckily, he was OK after ~ 15 minutes of rest. The photographer that caused the incident just kept on shooting while some of us were attending to the hermit. Obviously a blanket statement about using flash is not going to cover every situation and every species. Just a cautionary tale.

PS - I am not trying to single you out or say anything about what look like some successful flash shots. I post this once or twice a year. My experience in the cloud forest, with a shy hummingbird species. A reminder to myself, and perhaps others, to keep things in perspective.

I like the low angle shot of that blackbird. In my area, there are many red-winged blackbirds in their non-breeding or winter plumage. I think this plumage is more interesting than the breeding colors. I'll have to try some different angles for more variety.

Some shots from Conowingo today. The eagles were quite active catching fish but often they were too far away or faced the wrong direction from the photographer. Sometimes I had trouble keeping them in the frame too.

I don't know if it was just this one bird, but it happened with this type of flower every time. It was not a one off. I'd never seen it either. It was not drinking from the center but instead putting the beak under the outside of the flower.

One more image of the behavior. I thought the black and white might make the ISO noise more tolerable:

Quick question for you guys. How do you transport your 200-600 to location? I’m in the process of figuring this out. Most of my use cases will be me just driving somewhere, but I may bring this on international trips. I have the Peak Design Travel Backpack with the large camera cube. I’m struggling to figure out any other use beyond using the large cube for the 200-600. The rest of my kit that I would want to bring on a trip would fit into the medium cubes. In other words, I’m looking to return the large camera cube if I can find an alternative solution. Thanks!
