Your all going to laugh but until all this shakes out. I’m returning my Rokinon 45 when I get to Adorama and one of my Profoto A1x units and grab a B10 unit more power but in the meantime I said screw it grabbed the Sigma 35 1.4 Sony mount for like 649 on sale. I need a 3 shooter kit next week so why not the Sigma . At that price it’s worth trying again. Than will see what everyone’s got but until than to me it’s the same old bullshit. Hurry up and wait than get disappointed again. I’ll play with my lights for awhile and sit this whole thing out. ...Show more →
Hi Guy,
You tire me out with all of your buying and selling equipment.

Well I kinda screwed up on the Profoto . I should have bought 2 B10 first than one A1x instead of the reverse order since I was shaking the couch and only so much spit out. I’m the meantime I found another couch that had a real money in it .so I’ll fix this
I really don’t much care ofn the 35 I just need 3 bodies and 3 good lenses that can actually focus fast. It’s a red carpet deal and it’s a really fast pace so it’s gotta focus fast and I need very quick recycle times so need to gear up for it. I make very good money just on this so spending money is a no brainer. Okay back on the road . 2200 miles left . Lol

The 40's rendering is probably inimitable
Now in all seriousness, I doubt that bokeh would be a priority for a 35mm f/1.8 design. Most likely it will be a "great for infinity shots at f/8" affair. Which is fine with me at this focal length.
For bokeh I think we have to wait for the Sigma 35/1.2.
Hmm... My Sony/Zeiss 35mm/2.8 easily qualifies you f/8 criteria
Introducing a new 35mm/1.8 for FE mount has no sense if the lens does not perform well also wide open.

Obviously we will see. But I'm not so sure it will have a "distinct" advantage in IQ since it appears it may not even be a G lens let alone GM. The 24GM will only get better for me with the next higher MP sensors. As others have mentioned 36mm at 18mp is actually pretty darn good already. I'm plenty happy to give up a half stop for the benefit of having 2 lenses in one personally
For travel and only carrying one lens, one can think of the 24/1.4 GM as a 24-35/1.4-2 lens. The 35mm crop provides decent resolution and more distance for less distorted environment portraits with very similar rendering to the RX1R's Sonnar 35/2...and with a press of a custom button, we have an outstanding 24mm lens for detailed landscapes, street or scenarios where dynamic range, resolution and SNR are top priority.

A good comparison is to the Nikon Z mount 35mm f1.8:
Sony 35mm f1.8
price: $750
Maximum Magnification 0.24x
Optical Design 11 Elements in 9 Groups, 1 aspherical
Diaphragm Blades 9
Filter Size 55mm
Weight 280 g (0.62 lb)
Diameter 66 mm (2.6″
Length 73 mm (2.87″
Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S Specs:
price: $850
Maximum Magnification 0.19x
Optical Design 11 Elements in 9 Groups, Two ED and Three Aspherical Elements
Diaphragm Blades 9, Rounded
Filter Size 62 mm (Front)
Dimensions (ø x L) 2.87 x 3.39" / 73 x 86 mm
Weight 13.1 oz / 370 g
Too expensive. I know the Nikon is even pricier, but that too is too expensive.
I'm sure it will be a good lens, and it's nice and compact, but $750 is hard to swallow for a 35/1.8. You've got the very good 28/2 at $450. The outstanding 85/1.8 at $550, the pretty darn good (even if AF is mediocre) 50/1.8 at $250...and then this at $750? Why? Should be $550 like the 85/1.8.
Glad I got the Sigma 35/1.4 at $599 two weeks ago. Absolutely no regrets there.
I was hoping that this would be a great travel lens like my 35/1.8 Nikkor was on my D800, but alas this looks a little to bulky for my tastes. Hopefully it's great optically and has some nice sun stars when stopped down.
Hopefully Sony has learnt from the 28/2 FE what not to do. The new 35/1.8 FE has got a 55mm filter thread, more lens elements and is larger. The 28/2 FE weighs 200 grams and has a 49mm thread.

I mean, it's not large. It's very slightly larger than the 55/1.8 (2.5mm longer and 1mm wider...which is nothing) and only weighs 280g.

Old 35mm/2.8 still works despite the new f/1.8 version
The new 35mm/1.8 seems to slot nicely between existing 35mm options. If is ok wide open and stopped down matches (or exceeds) 35mm/2.8, it is no brainer to buy.
Here are the options for native FE mount options with autofocus for the Sony cameras:
35mm f2.8 Sony Zeiss
35mm f1.8 Sony FE
35mm f1.4 Sony Zeiss
Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART
Sigma 35mm f1.2 TBA
Samyang 35mm f2.8
Samyang 35mm f1.4
I count seven options, assuming I'm not forgetting any. That's without adapting the Canon lenses with the Sigma MC-11, which also is viable, although there seems to be little point.
Pretty amazing.
I'm very happy with the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8. However, given that I love this focal length, I am constantly tempted by the other options as well. Pretty amazing to be a Sony user these days, especially with Eye AF.
