Metrics like "large" are obviously relative. And relative to my travel needs it's large, especially compared to the 35/2.8 Sony and the 35/2 of the RX1RII.

I may buy one anyways to have available when I'm in "non-travel fast prime mode"

I feel the need for a lens purge coming on ...

Looks like a solid effort to me. I do hope it has at least a couple of ED/APD elements so that CA is fairly well controlled. If it does it should be a very nice lens. To me the slightly larger than expected front element and the 9 blade aperture suggests that the lens might have more than decent bokeh. We'll see of course. I would gladly trade a couple hundred dollars in price for nicer bokeh.

There are no APD elements, only one aspheric out of a total of 11 elements in 9 groups.

The Zeiss Batis 40/2 might be the closest comparison with more use of aspherics and APD glass and actotal of just nine elents..

The Sony 35/1.8 FE has a close focus of 0.22m eters and 0.24x magnification.

Thanks to the stupid 35/2.8 pricing for wrecking what should have been a homerun $500 lens from Sony.

At least we get a focus hold and AF-MF switch, which are typically reserved for G or GM models, I guess. I'd never pay MSRP for this lens, will patiently wait for a nice clean used copy for $400.

I agree I thought this lens was going to be a $550 lens to be part of the 85mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 28mm F2 line. $750 is steep. I'll wait till it goes on sale or buy a used copy for $500 :-D

I'm sure it will be a good lens, and it's nice and compact, but $750 is hard to swallow for a 35/1.8. You've got the very good 28/2 at $450. The outstanding 85/1.8 at $550, the pretty darn good (even if AF is mediocre) 50/1.8 at $250...and then this at $750? Why? Should be $550 like the 85/1.8.

Glad I got the Sigma 35/1.4 at $599 two weeks ago. Absolutely no regrets there.

Looks like just one aspherical element with no ED or APD elements, which makes me worry about CA. We'll see, but I am skeptical they pulled off a design that controls CA well without any special elements to control it.

, ya, they could have gone for a bit cheaper, but apparently it costs $250 extra to get those buttons, a linear motor, weather sealing and a plastic hood. IQ-wise, I expect it to be in between the Canon and Nikon as well. Now, I'm just waiting for the next missing lens that people will cry about.

Compare what’s available from Canon in full frame EF lenses to full frame Sony FE lenses....

The price is set by Trump's tariff...this lens is much cheaper in Canada and the EU.

Looks pretty good to me, happy the switches are included. Now I just need to decide whether to sell the tamron 28-70 and go to the 85mm plus 35mm, or keep the tammy.

I sent my Sigma back. The AF just didn't work well enough for me. As a benchmark, not as good as the 28MM FE

Glad to see a short MFD. The Zeiss 35/2.8 pissed me off with a long MFD for being a compact lens.
Too bad about the price though. Might still get it if it goes on sale!

AF has been great for me. It's a bit slow in single shot, but accurate, but I just keep it in CAF, which I have found to be quite fast and very accurate, EyeAF included.

Looks promising, but it needs to perform at 1.8 for me to sell my 35 2.8 gem.

Hopefully we've heard the end of the continuous 35 1.8 whining.

I agree. I was excited to see the lens announcement until I saw the price. Sony knows this is a long awaited lens and will sell at almost any price, so they are taking advantage of that need.

I'll stick with my Rokinon 35 1.4 that I got brand new last year for $430 shipped directly from Amazon. Not worth the $400+ with tax to upgrade it. I also have the Rokinon 45 1.8 when I want the smallest and lightest AF lens for general use, and the Tamron 28-75 for versatility.

This price makes the launch price of the Tamron 28-75 ($800) look even more incredible!

Shutterbug had this to say about that in a piece released today:

"We can't give an official judgement on image quality yet since the lens we tested out briefly was only a pre-production sample, but our initial impression is that the Sony FE 35mm F1.8 is a decent if unspectacular prime lens. Which is sort of how Sony is positioning this new addition to its FE lens line; though we doubt they would use those words! Overall sharpness was ok, with the lens performing best at around F/4."

I love my 35 f2.8 for travel and don't think this will replace it. The lens is very sharp at f2.8 and the small size is so nice, not that the new 35mm is that large.

Hmmm... I've been ignoring all the Sony 35mm 1.8/1.4 chatter, but this announcement has me thinking out loud...

I have an A7III and a6500. a6500 is for smallest travel kit. I tend to like zooms, but for low light situations I've bought a Sigma 30mm 1.4 APSc lens e-mount for the a6500 and a Zony Distagon 35mm 1.4 for the A7III.

Pondering if I could sell both of those lenses and buy this to use with both bodies. I'd lose a stop and this lens likely doesn't have the IQ of the Zony, but the size is tempting.

Maybe I should hold out for the Sony G 35mm 1.2? (Assuming it ever shows up) Would that be smaller than the Zony Distagon I have, small enough to use with the a6500? Decisions.... thoughts anyone?
